I dont use my phone i have a dslr.
I send the photos to myself on google chat to reduce the filesize for 4chan, remove metadata, while maintaining the original quality.
Fast shutter speed allows a crisper image.
I would recommend getting a fullsized camera instead of a phone as you have more control over the photo itself and arent stuck using the phone equivalent of automode.
/p/ would have a coniption fit if i recommended a modern bridge camera due to the sensor being similar to a phone sensor but you would have more control over image quality in manual mode compared to a phone which most of them have some sort of default automode.
you wanna take high res photos no matter the composition you're gonna need a dedicated camera

Not really recent, took these a couple of years ago but this seems like as good a thread to ask in as any on /p/.
I fell hard for the zoom meme, and although it's truly great to have a large zoom, especially if I'm trying to take a picture of some animals, I find almost all the pictures I take end up grainy when I look at them on a big screen.
Wondering if it would be better to go for something that focuses more on high resolution instead of high zoom??

Hyner View! One of my favorite views in the Wilds. Did you hike the steepish trail that goes down to the valley or just drive to the overlook?
Anonymous No.2813468 [Report] >>2813483
>>2813464
I again chickened out on hiking Gillespie Point and instead chose to hike from highway 44 NE of Hyner to the (now removed) Bob Webber cabin site on the western flank of Pine Creek.

>Did you hike the steepish trail that goes down to the valley
No, but I am planning to try to hike from the old view rd to a spot with a view of post draft hollow ( a tributary of hyner run)

I believe you can see Gillespie Point from here (the pyramid looking pointy thing in the far background), as well as possibly Chimney Rock, background left, and Twin Mountain Vista/Hilborn Mtn foreground right (another vista I've hiked to)

I also have Baldwin Point on my list, which is basically the other side of 44 (west) and unfortunately is not really maintained so it's chancy cuz the overlook could be largely obstructed now, but offers a look down the holler one west of hyner run from the north looking south, but its been sadly abandoned.

Hyner View is really nice. This is my second time there.

Lebo Vista is another good one. Some others:

>Chimney Rock near the Bull Run Trail
>Barbour Rock off the West Rim Trail
>Hemlock Mountain on the Black Forest Trail
>Raven's Horn on the Golden Eagle Trail
>Bob Webber Vista at the end of the trail
>Twin Sisters Trail's panoramic vista
>Kinzua Bridge from the skywalk for its uniqueness
>Kinzua Point and Tracy Ridge in ANF for water-level views
>Rimrock, Jake's Rocks and Minister Creek in the ANF

>>2813479
I've done Chimney Rock and Barbour Rock
I was trying to find Hemlock Mountain but it looks like the view requires optimal lighting and I couldn't exactly find where it was or where to park (common problem)
I'm still figuring out where the best hikable black forest trail views are. It takes a while to reference the little view icons on the PA maps with actual locations on something I can save and reference while out like google maps.

>Raven's Horn on the Golden Eagle Trail
I'm not sure which one that is offhand, I mean I know the Golden Eagle that's the most popular 'hard' trail even the waitress at my brunch place yesterday has done that one! But um I think that's too hard for me.

>Bob Webber Vista at the end of the trail
ditto
Although I feel like SOME of those vistas could potentially be accessed from Hilborn Mtn rd from the east more easily.

>Twin Sisters Trail's panoramic vista
yup I'd do that one again
I was thinking, its really hard to find longitudinal views of creeks (unobstructed) from above like that - where the creek/holler doesn't have a road running through it
Do you know of any others like that?

>>Kinzua Bridge from the skywalk for its uniqueness
done it twice and would do it again

>Kinzua Point and Tracy Ridge in ANF for water-level views
hmm ok haven't done that

>>Rimrock, Jake's Rocks and Minister Creek in the ANF
I did Jake's Rocks, but not rimrock, and I know there's some overlooks I missed around Jake's Rocks but I'm not sure how worth it they are
>minister creek
I just hiked to the overlook but didn't do the full loop
>Washington Park in Warren which is technically in the Wilds
interesting

>Plus some more obscure ones
such as?
Baldwin Point is on my list. Also frozen run gorge (would be super nice if I somehow could get access to the private road that's .5 mi from the vista). And a bunch of little mini-quests in the endless mountains for vistas and waterfalls.

Smith's Knob is another good candidate for the Matterhorn. It's a hard hike and I have yet to do it. I am thinking about coming up Painter run (the long way) to take some sting out of the steepness.

>Hemlock Mountain
The closest access point is at the end of Naval Run Road. The Naval Run Trail runs NW along the scenic creek before linking up with the BFT. From there, you climb over 1,000 feet to Hemlock's summit. There are two viewpoints, one in each direction.
Alternatively, you can start at the parking area on Route 44 at the intersection of Trout Run Road. It's a much gentler climb up Hemlock's western slope, on the opposite side of Pine Creek. The elevation change is actually a 20-30 ft. net loss.

>Raven's Horn on the Golden Eagle Trail
Raven's Horn is on the south side of the G.E.T. It's a moderately steep climb from the rail trail access point. Once it levels off, you walk past some interesting rock formations on your way to the famous overlook rock. There are reports of rattlers hanging out at the viewpoint. I didn't see any when I went in the middle of summer years ago. The only snake I ever saw in the area was around Hyner View.

>Bob Webber Vista
The Bob Webber Trail is just south of the Golden Eagle Trail. It's shorter but steeper than the GET. Nothing crazy steep like Half Dome or Mt. Tom (if you're familiar with those) but a constant uphill push. Mr. Webber didn't fuck around with his trailbuilding! The man was an /out/ legend in that part of Pennsylvania.

>Do you know of any others like that?
Are you willing to climb more than 1k feet and venture onto (unmarked) private land? I discovered a similar unobstructed, 180-degree viewpoint above Pine Creek. But you have to earn it.

>Kinzua Point
No hiking required for that one. It's right off Highway 59. Kinzua Dam, Kinzua Beach, the lower Rimrock trailhead, and the Bent Run waterfall trail are all nearby. Go on a weekday if possible. Weekends can get crowded and the holidays between Memorial Day and Labor Day are an absolute shitshow.

>Jake's Rocks
The views of the Allegheny Reservoir are absolutely worth it. Also there's an extensive MTB trail system if you're into that.

>Are you willing to climb more than 1k feet and venture onto (unmarked) private land?
probably not given that I keep wussing out on Gillespie Point, but I would be curious to know where it is just so I could see it on a map. I like seeing the geometry and the shapes of the land.

There's some locals who post super-hard routes to random minor views and waterfalls just pa-specific and I like reading their stuff even if I don't do it.

Is it anywhere near Houselander Mtn?

I am really searching for secret views of lesser hollers, not major stuff like Pine Creek, I mean that's nice and all but it's very cool to find a nice view down a minor holler. The easier the better!
Appreciate the suggestions.

Speaking of private land, probably not unmarked, but there's a view marked on the map above Renovo with a road leading to it, definitely private land, find it intriguing.

>The elevation change is actually a 20-30 ft. net loss.

It's west of the Golden Eagle Trail and south of the Dragon's Back Trail. Far north of Houselander Mtn.

I've found some excellent and unexpected vistas from rough forest roads in the Wilds. The best one had a commanding view of the Sinnemahoning. Not a place where you want to drive if your vehicle doesn't have good clearance though.

For views in hollars, my favorite spots are in state parks and camping areas so not exactly secret. Tbh, I don't seek those places out when I'm in the Wilds because there's plenty of that closer to home. What I don't have much of are steep trails leading to impressive open vistas higher up.

>The best one had a commanding view of the Sinnemahoning
do you mean keating mtn road? That's one of my favorites. The internet made the road out to be terrible but it was just mildly bumpy in parts. The bigger problem is the view is a bit overgrown somewhat.

There's also an off-trail view of sinnemahoning that I haven't done:

https://myhikes.org/trails/sinnemahoning-canyon-vistas-hike

>Not a place where you want to drive if your vehicle doesn't have good clearance though.

not a problem for me

>It's west of the Golden Eagle Trail and south of the Dragon's Back Trail

i'll have to look into that, could actually be an "official" view but you said its on private property I know some of that land is hunting club owned on hilborn mtn
its annoying to see all the little vista icons marked on the state forest pdfs but without coordinates so you have to triangulate exactly where the vistas are on a map and then see if there's photos to know if it's even worth visiting

>keating mtn road
Heh, looks like that's the one. The view matches the photo I took. I recall the road being in rough shape when I went years ago.

I was just checking out the general area on Google Maps and found another vista that looks nice: Kettle Creek Scenic View. Have you ever been?

>I recall the road being in rough shape when I went years ago.
maybe they fixed it up, they need to fix up the viewwwwww
all the stuff online made it out to be terrible and there were some small rocks in the road and it was bumpy but nothing awful
>Kettle Creek Scenic View
yeah last summer, right after the keating mtn rd vista in fact, there were some older men motorcycle camping there at the adjacent campsite
it's nice because you get a lake and some hills
and there's like a state department of transportation warehouse (vehicle storage) nearby so the dirt road to get there from keating was glass smooth the whole way

Great view, smooth road, I'm there!

The large hill on the other side of Kettle Creek Lake also intrigues me. It reminds me of some of the steeper hills above Pine Creek. The subpeak to the left is called Roungtop. Not sure if the larger one has a name. It should. For PA, that's a big fucking climb from creekside (840 feet) to the hilltop (2,180 feet) in just a mile if you go straight up the spine.

Yuuuuup, if you don't have one you are absolutely screwed as you don't have anything insulating the heat beneath you. They are great for hot weather as they'll make whatever it is feel 10 to 20 degrees colder, but in cool to cold weather... be ready to wake up freezing. I will say, it did well enough that I was able to outlast my friend who was sleeping in the tent and went home around 1 a.m., but I definitely need to figure out why I lost the heat so drastically.

Also, here's a pic of one of my recent outings so I'm not getting too off topic sharing the experience.

Other than that, even with trees that were too close together and my hodgepodge of a set up, I slept really comfortably.

I live next to a thriving national park and as such I'm gonna go for a bushwalk shorly. I'll bring my camera with my macro lens.

It rained for like 2 weeks straight so it's gonna be super murky in there, with snakes and spiders on the move. Will take photos of anything interesting I see and rapport back.

Things I might see:
>wallaby
>monitor lizard
>funnel web spider
>echidna
>ground dwelling demon leeches
>red belly blacksnek
>eastern brownsnek
>birds of different feathers
>nothing

whelp I spent 3 hours /out/ and took a bunch of ƒotos but honestly didn't see anything exciting. I tried to make it to my secret gully which is a ways off the trail and it's a spot that's just full of snakes, leeches, and crazy mushrooms but it was too flooded. I coped for awhile but eventually I had to turn back, I was going to be knee deep in stagnant water which isn't particularly safe but I hadn't even gotten close to the low flood zone yet. I'm sure by the time I met up with the river I would have been waist deep and redbellies do love to frolic and swim and flood waters.

I'll go through my photos tonight and maybe do a minidump if any of them are interesting

I've always heard of these being called tombstones. it is a capped off well. could be oil, natural gas, or water. I've run into hundreds of them in Nevada,

how did they find themselves without water like this? there's clearly water. did the water recede too quickly? did the disappear entirely and then come back by the time the photo was taken? was it alliums? I must know

Didn't make it to the lakes we were shooting for, but just got back from a weekend bear hunting excursion. Big avalanche/landslide took out a huge chunk of trail somewhere in MT.

Fellow French Alps guy here, with a few questions!

>>2822216

Based on the dates, I assume the orchids are from that same hike around Mount Granier? Never seen that particular species in the wild yet.

>>2822218
>>2822219
Can I ask where those were taken, roughly? Feels like somewhere north of the Grand Som, given the clear view to the Mont Blanc, but I'm not too familiar with that area.

>>2822220
Never tire of seeing that monastery, of course. Thanks for sharing the pics!

Hello anon,

>Based on the dates, I assume the orchids are from that same hike around Mount Granier? Never seen that particular species in the wild yet.
These are Cypripedium calceolus (sabots de Vénus). These were on a small trail around the Désert d'Entremont.

>Can I ask where those were taken, roughly? Feels like somewhere north of the Grand Som, given the clear view to the Mont Blanc, but I'm not too familiar with that area.
Roughly at 45.42896431254522, 5.907453798418104
First pic was ENE, down the ravine.
Second pic was ESE, facing Sainte-Marie-Du-Mont/Croix-de-l'Alpe.

Got many more pics of orchids (whole fields of rochidée sureau around mount pinet, orchidée militaire, etc) but pics are above 5Mb and too lazy to compress.
Lots of fauna too also if you get up early enough.
Anyways, check the chartreuse if you have the chance end of may/early june.

is that one of them carnivorous pitcher plants? also is this in the Southeast USA?
Anonymous No.2822535 [Report]
>>2822533
I dont think it is carnivorous. We do have alot of pitcher plants here but they are a bit more rare than this. I associate Jack in the Pulpit with Trillium. It generally grows with Northern Spider Lily.

And yes it is the deep SE.
