Have any of you done it before?
I looked up the legality of it in my country. And It's illegal.
>unless you're paying some company for a license to do it in a designated area on their property
and you get to do it in select places
>which are delibaretely far away from any interesting deposits
but if you pay to go there, and pay to dig, you get to keep what you find
>unless you find something interesting, at which point your license can be revoked at any time and you have to hand in your finds, or face criminal punishment
Sometimes I wish I didn't live in Europe. I see people online looking for fossils in New Zealand and in America, and having so much fun...

damn, sad laws
the rivers where i'm at are filled with fossils, all from the sea that used to be here
if you shift though the gravel you'll find its like 10% fossils, coral & crinoid segments mostly, snail shells & bryozoans too
its genuinely shocking to me just how many there are, and the detail of them, it really puts into perspective the amount of life there was

That sounds pretty great. I'd stand by the river hunched over until my back gives out. Are you American?
Apparently NZ has some huge slate beaches where fossils are very easy to find. Just look for a big, solid oval in the slate. From fossilized birds to fish.

it's all fun and games until some asshole sees you breaking rocks in nature, decides to be a good little boy and call the cops and
>breaking rocks to look for fossils to take home
turns into
>violation of nature conservation with intend of theft

Damn bro, that's gay. I bring a hammer, chisel, and fishing rod to my kids' soccer practice then wander over to the creek and if the fishing ain't hot I'll bust open rocks from a sedimentary deposit for some of the craziest preserved plants I've ever seen. I have shit loads of them, like perfect leaves, preserved so well you can see the stomata. Take a vacation to Montana, just don't be one of those fags who never leaves.

I always wanted to hunt for fossils, but I don't know where or with what tools to do it. I'm in Argentine Patagonia

>some asshole sees you
room temperature iq brainlet detected

if the fossil-bearing formation in question outcrops off trail* that problem doesn't exist

*and it does, because room temperature iq brainlets like you might not know but trails only reach a microscopic percentage of the total land area of a territory, expecially in the mountains. 99,99% of people haven't even ever been off trail, i bet you don't even know how to do it

One time me and a friend went out together. He went fossil hunting and i went for a hike. When i came back i reached for something in the back pocket of the car seat that we both came in, and i didn't know he put all his tiny brittle fossils back there, and i accidentally crushed a bunch of them. I still feel bad about it.

I've been to a limestone bed in a state park where fossil hunting is allowed. It predates vertebrates. My kids found a few neat shells. It's illegal to collect vertebrate fossils in my state.

Have you tried just ignoring the laws and not flaunting your fossils? Like who the fuck is going to stop you from grabbing a big ass rock and putting it in your car?
