i often go /out/ but never posted here before because there's nothing special about it, if i want to share some photos i just post on my personal travel blog

which can become your personal travel blog as well if you join.

it's exactly like here but 10 times funnier because of the regional flags game, flexing with the ultrarare village flag the mountain i go belongs to is half of the fun itself

I'm going to Northern Switzerland later this month, be sure to follow my personal travel blog, and i expect all of you with a 3 digits iq to become regulars on /flag/ as well.

funny thing to say because there's basically none here, it's just an endless stream of photos that barely get a single (You). usually there isn't even discussion attached to it, i genuinely feel bad for the anons posting them only here

there is a lot of banting and flexing on /extraflags/ exactly because of, again, the regional flags game. if /out/ had flags we could bring them here too but that's not the case so this board will stay cucked until then

and it's not "my" blog, it was founded years before i joined, anyone can use it as his own blog as well. which is exactly what you do with this thread, with the difference that's it's way less fun for reasons that are outside of your control

Haha here's some bantz: so I remember reading about this trail somewhere in or near the Red River Gorge but it wasn't like an official trail it was someone's private property and you pay a guy 5$ or something to walk a fire road up to a view but I have no memory of what it was called or specifically where it was.
Anonymous No.2822849 >>2822850

I've never heard of this but that's rather petty. We have a midstate trail in MA much of which (maybe more than half of it) is through private properties but everyone agrees to allow the trail to pass through, so long as nobody fucks it up for everyone else by damaging shit or anything.

there isn't some guy sitting there in a lawn chair asking for $2 to pass through his few acres or whatever

Well, make sure to go at high water, it would be absurdly disappointing to go at low water and you can't swim in the water anyways. There are two swimming pools (I think) included with your 10$ daily ticket though on the property (it's a linear park of sorts).
It looked like there was a way you could go to the bottom of the gorge and across to the other side but I'm not sure where that leads and it was marked off with a barrier but very intriguing. Most of the trail is the west rim and its kinda a combined road/trail like the trail runs along the road so you can walk or drive or any combination and there's three waterfalls and a bunch of little overlooks too.
The first waterfall is the most crowded and has a tall railroad bridge above it, there was a parking lot ABOVE the first waterfall, and that was the only FULL parking I encountered, though the weather was crappy when I went (cold and drizzling). I'm not 100% sure what that parking was all about maybe a different view. You can also take a damn HOT AIR BALLOON above the gorge but I'm sure that's at least 500$ a person. Definitely worth it if you can.

Eat before you visit. There's a little food vending thing at the first upper waterfall but it's probably not that great unless you are emergency hungry.

My biggest issue with jeets is they take incredibly careful selfies and just stand there for 10 seconds holding the camera composing the shot I dunno what's going on with that and they do not stop talking the whole time so good luck getting videos when they are there.

You can either walk from the upper falls to the middle falls or re-park, the middle falls is the money shot, it's not as tol as Taughhannock Falls but it's much wider and thus much more impressive when flowing well. There's also mini-subsidiary waterfalls running off the sides - making it extra pretty. If you can somehow get to the bottom of middle falls, I don't know how it looked impossible to me.
Anonymous No.2822855 >>2822857
>>2822853
from middle falls if you drive above it and down the road a bit you get to inspiration point which is where you can see upper and middle falls in one photo which is cool but could be a bit better maintained with clearing the brush in front of the overlook - a common issue. From there you find a couple more overlooks - for me they were great and I really enjoyed the overlooks as much as the waterfalls and you can see into the distance at some of them and the canyon walls are sheer vertical, unlike the unglaciated Red River Gorge to the SW.

The you get to Lower Falls - keep RIGHT at the road fork for the quickest path. There's a "quick" view flat path to a view of lower falls or 100+ steps (not bad actually) built by the CCC (all of these parks are really CCC built) to a closer overlook where you WILL get sprayed on by lower falls and there's also a bridge (foot) across the gorge where the barrier was I mentioned earlier. Seems like these areas are very subject to landslides.
Again, I saw no way to get to the bottom bottom of Lower Falls but maybe there is one. Seemed super dangerous without a rope anyways.
Then from Lower Falls the gorge kinda flattens out a bit and turns into farmland (sort of reminiscent of Pine Creek Gorge in PA how its surrounded by farms on the rim in some places) and there's a few more meh-ish overlooks until you get to the dam and then the gorge ends. It sort of pops out of nowhere which is cool, unlike the maze of chutes and ladders level after level of intersecting gorges you get in WV for comparison.

I'm really tired I'll have more photos tomorrow sorry this thread has been shit for you I wanna make it good.

>>2822845
I will post more photos tomorrow. I do recall reading on one the plaques that a guy built a cabin on the far side of the gorge in one of the places and lived there I guess before the railroad came through or something. Something like they built a new bridge and his cabin was obsolete cuz he was helping people get through the area.

Anyways, this is secret falls. I dunno if it has an actual name but you could see it from one of the overlooks and there was I think an adjacent parking lot that was full-ish where maybe people were hiking to the falls from there. I'd go back and do secret falls.

Also, I wanna say somewhere in same rough area is Zoar Valley that has some old growth and a gorge so maybe I will go back there and do it, AND I have to figure out the shuttle timing to do Watkins Glen. I did a little bit of it but it was getting dark and I found TWO random waterfalls instead before dark. Watkins Glen is like mini-letchworth its all packed into one tiny holler that's 500 ft top to bottom.

I do save some stuff anons tell me and then go there. Not that it's rare or anything but that's how I found Grandview in New River Gorge and I always go there when I'm in the area.

yup that's the one I was thinking of, much appreciated
I guess I am looking for views, a couple months ago I did some of the views in Big South Fork and that was quite enjoyable. I've been to Red River before but it was 100 degrees and I didn't get much done.
I've done Chimney Top, so I guess I could do Hanson's Point which is kinda the mirror image reverse, but I prefer shorter (2-3 mi or less) hikes where possible.
There's also Cloudsplitter but I feel like the ONLY way to get onto that is by some scrambly-rock climbing that's above my ability set.
And then I guess the main one most people do is Courthouse Rock.
Also interested in any trails you recommend in the area or nearby. I can't really do anything super strenuous but I don't mind driving on a gravel road to get to a weird trailhead and I have 4WD.

Also, doesn't need to be IN Red River proper, I'm interested in the surround area as well.

Also was thinking of combining Red River with Ohio River for some more views but I think I've DONE the only bluff-from-above view of the Ohio between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati and that's also called Raven's Rock, I've also done Edge of Appalachia view hike that's not the Ohio River but a tributary.
I also want to see that little island that is in the river near Parkersburg and do a tour of the Blennerhassett hotel if I can it had such a gorgeous interior.

Hey pssst Red River guy, I'll trade you a waterfall for some info. It seems like Raven Rock and Courthouse Rock are basically the same length and same elevation gain. Which would you recommend if I only did one? Cuz it seems like Courthouse Rock is way more popular and some of the reviews of Raven Rock suggest the trail is flooded/muddy/overgrown - but maybe the view is the same or, it's hard to tell and I definitely only have the stamina for one.

I guess I have to play around with that website you sent me.

I was in San Francisco this spring and there was three jeets that hauled a gas generator, table and speakers up to one of the overlooks at Sutro Baths so they could blast shitty edm off a macbook and film themselves with a drone. Left empty white claws on the ground and had a dog that was lunging at passersby.
Shitskin jeets are truly the most lesser of all the races, I've met well-socialized groids but every indian I've ever met has been rude, socially awkward and stunk like roadkill. It must have something to do with the hive cities they're raised in.

There's a term for alpine plants that grow under the snowdrifts and come up extremely early but I can't remember what it is, I read about it in a short field guide to alpine plants. That far south the early blooms might be over but it can't hurt to check.

I went through 4-5 t-shirts from one end of the gorge to the other.

Is that a trillium flower? There's no tru-alpine stuff here and I I'm meh about that anyways but there's sub-alpine and that's always nice in the middle of a hot summer like this is shaping up to be. I gotta figure out some good high altitude routes this summer. I've had too many trips to lower elevation places in July and August and even late June that were just misery because of the heat.

The parking situation with pic related is really shitty.
There's a HUGE lot nearby, but it's parking for a brewery only which of course has a big patio with a prime view of the waterfall - and they have a sign up saying sorry no parking for other events - and there's this tiny maybe 5-6 car lot next door with a small sign where you can actually park to see the upper falls. And it didn't seem like there was any way for the public to access the bottom of upper falls (or lower falls, but the internet suggests I may be wrong about lower falls of the genessee

Maplewood Park is where most people park to access the path leading to Lower and Middle Falls. It's on the other side of the river from Seth Green Park where you access Norton's Falls.

The waterfall at Norton's Falls is less impressive than the ones on the Genesee, but has a small manmade cave above it that gives it some uniqueness.

Also in Rochester: Seneca Park and Turning Point Park have smaller waterfalls/cascades. Even if the falls have minimal flow, the parks are worth visiting. Seneca Park has a decent zoo but is also in a rough area with sketchy characters hanging out at times. Car break-ins are common and I saw a drug deal go down one time. Turning Point has scenic boardwalks and is great for birdwatching if you're into that. There's also Densmore Falls that you can walk to from the Irondequoit Middle School parking lot when school isn't in session.

Did you check out the other waterfalls in Montour Falls (She-Qua-Ga Falls, Aunt Sarah's Falls and Deckertown Falls)? My personal recommendation in that area is Excelsior Glen off Highway 414 in Watkins Glen. If you're comfortable with creekwalking and scaling cliffs, you can explore some neat areas in solitude. Empire Falls, a 120-foot cascade, is the biggest prize. Another good one is Templar Falls off the FLT where you rappel down using a rope. There's also good cliff-climbing in Sugar Hill SF that's similar to Zoar Valley that you mentioned in an earlier post. Hector Falls and Eldridge Falls are less adventurous options near Watkins Glen SP that are basically roadside stops.

Nyfalls.com, falzguy.com and the 200 Waterfalls in CNY & WNY book are great resources for waterfalling in the region.

It doesn't sound like Excelsior would be a good match then. I'll throw out some more ideas in the general Finger Lakes and Genesee Valley regions that are either simple trail hikes or roadside stops

>Hikes
Ithaca: Taughannock Falls, Robert H. Treman and Buttermilk Falls State Parks. Some of the finest waterfalls in the state. The stairs at Treman give you a nice workout with a payoff at Lucifer Falls. Enfield Falls is a popular swimming spot near the park entrance. Don't miss the Upper Falls at Taughannock that gets overshadowed by the main falls. There are many great waterfalls in the city of Ithaca, too.
Fillmore Glen SP: Typical NYS setup with gorge and rim trails, with the gorge trail being the preferred option. Way less crowded than Watkins Glen though not as Instagrammable
Ludlowville Falls: Located in a town park. Decent enough view from the end of the park if you don't want to venture down to the waterfall's base and cave behind it
Keuka Lake Outlet Trail: Easy walking to Seneca Mills and Cascade Falls
Stony Brook State Park: Already mentioned itt
Sonyea State Forest: Another recommended stop after Letchworth. Small waterfalls surrounded by tall cliffs on Keshequa Creek. There are primitive campsites right next to the creek and further upland
Geneseo: Fall Brook Falls is a classic that's accessible via a paid guided tour if you don't want to trespass. Indian Fort Nature Preserve is down the road from there and has a waterfall and good fishing on the Genesee River

>Roadside
Avon: Papermill Falls, Ashantee Falls. There's a scenic bike path nearby and Five Arch Bridge is also worth a stop
Wyoming Co: Wiscoy Falls, Mills Mills Falls and Hume Falls are right near each other. Swimming is no longer allowed at Wiscoy which is a bummer
Wolcott: Wolcott Falls up near Chimney Bluffs on Lake Ontario

Lots of good falls in CNY too: Chittenango Falls, Pratt's Falls, Tinker Falls, Delphi Falls, Pixley Falls and Salmon River Falls closer to the ADK

I'm getting a hardtail mountain bike soon and I'm really excited.
I don't mind driving to weird places as long as the hike itself isn't climbing/vertical. I'm used to steep steps and some scrambling for waterfalls, hard to avoid that, but I don't do anything super long or extra strenuous.
I will write all this down and research it on my own time.
Appreciate all the suggestions.

And for Zoar Valley what am I looking for there? It seems like to access the old growth areas it's just off-trail and steep maybe? Is there any easy-access old growth/vistas in the area? You mentioned something in lieu of Zoar Valley also interested in other places you can find old growth without too much vertical effort.
Anonymous No.2823562
>>2823556
Most of Zoar Valley MUA is now off-limits. The state wanted to limit their liability after so many hikers, climbers, rafters, and paddlers died falling from cliffs or drowning in Cattaraugus Creek during high water periods. Your best bet is to hike the legal DEC trail down to Valentine Flats and then walk along the main branch past the confluence. There, you will encounter old growth strands along the bottom of the canyon, that extend for miles. Just monitor the water levels before you go. There are alternating creekwalking and shorewalking sections, plus some areas where you can wander into the woods without having to scale any steep cliffs. Summertime is usually best for exploration, though I have gone in all seasons including winter.

I would also recommend the Deer Lick Nature Preserve which is an extension of Zoar Valley. It has trails going right through old growth forests where you will find an impressive assortment of maples, oaks, hemlocks, beeches, birches, ashes, etc. There is also a small waterfall by a creek crossing plus obstructed views of the bigger waterfalls that cascade from the Cattaraugus Creek cliffs. However, getting closer to them requires trespassing. The nature conservancy posts the land and people have been charged with trespassing in the past. Winter is the best time for off-trail adventures at Deer Lick because the bushwhacking is easier and there's less chance of cops/sheriffs patrolling the area then.

Have fun with the new bike and let me know if you want recommendations for mtb, xc or gravel trails in the region. I usually stick to gravel until 4th of July weekend when I break out the mtb. The trails *usually* have dried out by then. Not sure about this year because it has been an abnormally wet spring with no end in sight.

Yeah, its a local maximum. There is not a ton of view; if you want that, fall creek falls is your place.
This is the high point of window cliffs. The book thing about this place is the hike, the relative obscurity (few know of this spot) and the fact you can climb the windows yourself. You can get across the half dozen windows by following a pretty dodgy trail and making a few short jumps once you're up there. The hike itself is the highlight.

Eh, I'm not super fit (5'10" 165, 24% body fat). The first window is pretty free to hang out in, but the others are intimidating. The fall is bad if you lose your footing (maybe 500ft) and there is only a half shoulder width of footing at points. The first window is on the other side of the "do not pass this sign" sign and can be done with some light shuffling.

Griffis Sculpture Park is right near Zoar Valley and is a cool mesh of nature and outdoor artwork. After that go north toward Buffalo and check out the Eternal Flame Falls. Or you could go south to Little Rock City State Forest and Allegany State Park. Both have large boulders to climb on and squeeze through. >jeet central
That's Niagara Falls and Toronto

>I sense that will be eternally crowded
You're probably right. Still a unique sight if you've never been.

>I feel like there's two and I've only been to one of them
There's also Rock City Park near Olean that has a natural bridge. And Panama Rocks in Chautauqua County.

>Allegany State Park there's no views!
There are nice lakeside views on Quaker Lake and Red House Lake. You can rent a kayak if you don't have your own.
For higher elevation views, there are a few but not many. Most of these are in the Red House section. The best is near the northern entrance. It's labeled Scenic Overlook on Google Maps. The Art Roscoe trail system has an east-facing vista at the skiing hut and a fire tower that's occasionally open to visitors. Nearby is a stone tower which has so-so views.
The fire tower in the Quaker section (Mt. Tuscarora) no longer rises above treeline so it wouldn't matter if the park restored it. The Quaker section doesn't have any special views from the trails or roads, besides around the lake itself. You're better off going to Allegheny National Forest in PA where the Rimrock, Jake's Rocks, Minister Creek, and Tidioute areas have some good ones from up top. And Tracy Ridge down by the water.

>and a fire tower that's occasionally open to visitors
what an annoying game to figure out when/if that's open but that's probably the best view
>The Art Roscoe trail system has an east-facing vista

>Jake's Rocks

The east side of Buffalo is mostly ghetto. The west side has a few remaining pockets of ghetto and the rest of the city is ok. The city still has a lot of urbex spots, just not as many as before.

>it looked meh
Everything is relative. It's the best view in ASP with a 180 degree view towards Salamanca. It's not as good as the ones you're seeing at Zoar and Pine Creek though. You can see this view and the Art Roscoe view on Google Maps. Go to Streetview mode and click on the blue dots in the northern end of the park and you should see them.

>and the rest of the city is ok
im always looking for big older historic mansions to tour/photograph
>The city still has a lot of urbex spots
not my thing
>It's not as good as the ones you're seeing at Zoar and Pine Creek though
eh those are kinda obstructed with leaves
my dream is to clear out ALL the fucking trees blocking gorge views at all of these parks
every single goddamn tree that's eye level to the trail
I was thinking my favorite pine creek views are Lebo Vista and I think it's called Ramsay Vista at the end of the pipeline rd near houselander mtn - that one is 180
I think I've done like 20 pine creek views and there's way more

>It's the best view in ASP with a 180 degree view towards Salamanca
I guess ill look into it again
>Go to Streetview mode and click on the blue dots in the northern end of the park and you should see them.
google maps is retarded because it doesn't georeference pictures properly - it claims to show you where a picture was taken but you can't even full size the picture and the locations aren't accurate
alltrails at least you can see EXACTLY where a photo was taken
that's how I got peter's point in zoar cuz someone put the coordinates on alltrails - i mean there was a clear path beyond the fence but I dunno if I would have gone not knowing that in advance

>two hour time window one day a week
I'd wanna be sure that's a good view before trekking out to see it - I also need to hit up kinzua bridge and the oil creek railroad before the fall is over

The blue dots for the Scenic Overlook, Stone Tower, and Art Roscoe viewpoints are positioned correctly, I can assure you.

>I'd wanna be sure that's a good view
This I cannot assure you because the gate was locked every time I went. It looks like you might get partial views between trees, but no wide-open panoramic views like the ADK fire towers. The good news is that the Art Roscoe trail vista is further down the same path and the other vistas I mentioned are in the same general area. So it's not like everything would hinge on the Summit tower's views.

adk and catskills are against my religion :^)
to be quite honest, I much prefer unglaciated areas - shale is just not very photogenic to me
