Started fishing for carp over here in the US and I think itโ€™s pretty addicting. Unpressured, relatively, and youโ€™d be hard pressed to find a better fight in your average pond. Only drawback is that sitting around and waiting for your drag to rip is kinda boring, but Iโ€™ve taken a bass rod out to play with in the mean time and Iโ€™m having a blast.

Assuming its mono or flouro, one a year is safest. 3-5 for braid but it depends on usage and storage, like on a car. Youll get the same mileage with cheap, gently used and properly stored mono/flouro as you do decent used and abused braid

I'm such a fucking retard and i'm still pissed about it today
>went fishing to a lake yesterday afternoon where i usually just fish with rainworms
>never caught there anything else besides some small fish
>yesterday decided to try out some new fishing maize flavor for next time
>whole afternoon nothing
>then throw some more maize to lure in fish
>thinking to myself that i should rather stick to rainworms here again
>suddenly the bobber goes nuts
>something is on
>it's a fucking prime carp
>beautiful as hell and around 4-5kg judging from the looks
>not a trophy fish but a great catch
>fuck i don't have a fishing net because i never caught/seen something as big here
>get the fish to the shore
>could already touch him
>want to grab him out with my hand
>be a retard and try to lift him some more with the line and oh my who would have thought the hook snaps away from line under the swivel
>he gets away
There was no other activity the whole afternoon besides that, he literally was gods gift for me but i fuck it up, even the weather changed when he snapped off as it started being windy as hell so the bobber didn't even stay still anymore
Pic related is a quick picture i took of him before i fucked it up

I caught that in Lady Evelyn provincial park on a Williams w30 in silver and blue I think, along a drop off I thought might be nice, didn't have a measure but probably just under 20. I find that's where they start getting that "whoa" level of big, Especially on yours. That one is FAT anon whered you get it?
I caught 4 or 5 Wally's on the trip all around that size that one was probably the biggest, I don't know if they get much bigger in backcountry lakes.

Looks to be around 2kg just from the picture, he's got a little face like a small carp. Take it as a lesson to bring a net next time and catch the big ones. Carp are great fun, and if you can manage bones they actually eat pretty well also, though judging by your gay little bobber setup I'm betting you're a bong and you'd rather name them and dress them up in little outfits or whatever the fuck instead of murdering them for their carbon.

Well, I'm back from a trip to Mallorca, mostly for scuba diving, but I expected very easy light rock and surf fishing like last September, with plenty of predatory fish really close to the coastline. I snorkeled around the fishing spots and they were devoid of pretty much anything during the day, when last year i hooked anything from barracudas to amberjacks (best fighters I ever got) and blue runners and saw numerous surface chases, this year all I saw was seabreams and even then, it seems the largest ones were barely feeding. I saved my sessions by building some paternoster rigs with sandworms imitations, but damn was that frustrating. I don't know if i simply didn't knew the proper spots for the season or if the entire area was like that.

Orvis, like Sage (Farbank), is a mid to higher end company that has everything to complete your fly fishing lifestyle. Orvis has been around for over 100 years. A while back, their quality deteriorated significantly, but now, they seem to make quality products. I would have no issue about buying an Orvis product. Their bags and flies are great. Pretty much everything in fly fishing is more expensive than it should be. If you just wanted to buy an Echo Lift Kit and buy nothing else, you'd be totally fine. Just upgrade the line if you stay in the sport for more than a few months.
>>2823999
TU is one of a few good organizations that is improving fly fishing. They lobby for more angler access, improve streams, and buy streams for public use. The way I see TU and similar organizations is that they are for men in their 40's+ with some extra cash and a philanthropic urge. It's the men's equivalent of raising money for kids with leukemia or one of the many female-dominated philanthropic causes. If you're familiar with Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Whitetails Unlimited, or Pheasants Forever, it's like that.

They probably sell close to 500 spinning rigs to every fly rig. It's niche and small production. Even the cheapest Chinese fly reels are 30 bucks or so where the cheapest spinning reels are 2 or 3 dollars., it's expensive to tool up for small runs but if you know you can run the line basically nonstop you can spread the production cost out very thin and still make great money, not the case if you have to warehouse a stock while you wait for the small subgroup to buy them up. Basic economics .

The only places you can really cut costs in flies is labor and hooks- and those are arguably the two most important parts. What good is a fly that falls apart before it catches a fish, and what good is a well tied fly on a garbage hook

Not a bad day just a bit of a bummer. I decided to throw streamers on my 3 WT euro rod that has been giving me trouble. Before I even tie on a fly, a big walleye swims up to my feet. I tied on a black articulated streamer. I was most interested in fishing Joe's Mini Crayfish, but I was not yet in the section where I thought it would shine. Casting the streamer was easy, but it would be the only I casted it. I hooked into a carp and fought it for a couple minutes. I had 4X on but the problem was the 3 WT having no backbone. I broke off when I put the line in hand. I was concerned about snapping the rod tge whole time, despite having 0 drag. I was pretty pissed about losing the streamer my friend tied, but this experience just gives me motivation to get out there with my 8 WT and target those carp. The coolest part is that I think the carp actually went for the streamer. I wasn't snagging or jerking the fly, and the hook was in or around the mouth.

There aren't any panfish where I live unfortunately. There's walleye, trout (stocked), and yellow perch though.
There are also northern pike and they're fun to fight. Bit of a pain to get the y bones out though.

That happens, all you can really do is keep a low rod angle and basically handling the fish. An 8 weight is a good idea, carp are fun on the fly. I really like fast glass for carp- the lower line speed gives a more delicate presentation and the extra modulus of glass gives me better fighting power imo- my bad ass glass was a great carp stick and my current 7 weight is superb.

A small.black streamer on a slow retrieve is absolutely something a carp would eat, too, so good odds you actually hooked it legally. I tie a carp fly I call a backwards bug, it's basically a rubber legs foxy clouser, it works great, and I switch between lead eyes and bead chain eyes depending on how fast I want it to sink.

If your tippet is too large for your fly's eye, you're either using too large of a leader to begin with or you've cut back to the middle taper.
If it's a brand new leader, use a smaller one unless it's your only leader, then go ahead. Try to keep the sections somewhat equal, for example, on a 9ft leader, 3 ft butt section, 3 ft middle and a 3 ft tippet. It doesn't need to be exact, but closer is usually better.
If you've cut back to the middle section, it's time(technically past time) to add more tippet. In the future, try and add more tippet before you hit the middle section.

I rarely even use them on metal leader I permanently affix 8-12 inches of leader to each musky fly and swap flies with a loop to loop connection. The only time I really swap to snaps on wire is if there's hammer handles around that im not targeting and I don't want to lose a bunch of bass flies.

You can tie a perfection loop on the end of your leader and then another at the end of a section of mono tied to the fly for quick change flies at the expense of more potential tangles and compromises in presentation so not ideal for finesse work or spooky fish.

It doesn't get much easier than a clinch knot. I use test hook clips to hold my fly by the bend of the hook. run the line through the eye of the hook, spin it 5 times and run the tag end through the gap below the twists and above the eye of the hook. Pinch the tag and fly lube the line with spit and pull the main line tight. I waste very little line with only about a quarter to half inch of tag to cut.

That's what tippet rings are for. Attach like 18" of tippet material to the fly with a loop at the bitter end and then just do a loop-to-loop connection with the tippet ring and you're set.

Bolt rig, and hair rig. 2 or 3 oz sinker with a 6-8" lead to a hair rig hook with 3 or 4 pieces of corn on it, that's the formula. Toss that out and spread some more corn in the area. Hair rig keeps the hook exposed (use a razor sharp offset hook) and the heavy weight makes sure it drives home when the carp feels the sting and takes off.

Pic is the cool Chinese man I taught how to carp fish I think he's dead now I miss him.

The best way to practice knots is to go to home depot and buy an eye bolt and then just start winding that "free" loading twine around your palm until you're satisfied or until someone bothers you about it. If they bother you about it cut it off ASAP and promptly leave, flashing the eye bolt and saying some bullshit about securing your load on your way through the door way. Then while you watch YouTube or movies or whatever idly, but intently, tie knots on the eye bolt. The palomar knot is strongest, clinch knot is fastest, uni knot most versatile, and kreh loop/no-slip mono loop is my go to loop knot to connect line to lure.
>>2824555
When line gets too heavy for knots, when you want loop knots, and when you want something faster than the uni knot. With the pinch and twist method you can tie a clinch knot in under 10 seconds. With a little practice.

Recommend me some good breathable shirts with some UV protection and new pants. I don't care if I have to use suspenders. I was looking at stuff like Helikon Tex and MAYBE lightweight wool button down shirts? I like to dress business casual enough to blend into office then immediately go to the streams or lakes without having to change. Currently my favorite shirt is a Beretta field shirt that is long discontinued. Helikon Tex seems nice

I actually was kidding, it's just the first knot most people learn when they start fishing because it's simple enough a child can do it after showing them once and it's very quick.

Absolutely. If the line isn't already through the eye of the hook it usually takes me closer to 12-15 seconds but if I start a timer with the eye already threaded I cab have a clinch knot tied in about 8.5 seconds, well under 10. I literally just timed myself. Mind you I also didn't add trimming the tag to that time. All said and done, in the field, having a clinch knot tied realistically takes closer to 20-30 seconds depending on how much you fumble, it usually takes me longer to get a fly out of my box than to get said fly tied on.
>>2824610
Depends on the flies. A single complex musky fly might take well over an hour to tie and run $30 or more, but a dozen wooly buggers on good hooks with tungsten beads I usually ask $30

Anon im glad you posted this, Ive been looking for a new net. I have the same wooden trout net with rubber netting everyone has and its good but some of the fish ive been catching the past two years are just too big for it.
I do backcountry trips and dont want a big heavy net, The teardrop frabill in 19x23 looks like my best option but all the pictures online are shit. My current net is roughly 18x13.
What size do you have? Could you post a picture or two from above looking top down?
Whats the biggest fish you can land in it before it starts feeling risky or they flop out? I find about 24" is the length right now where its really hard to not lose them next to the canoe while netting them.
>>2824577
That sounds fun anon!
lake trout are my favorite fish and ive never bottom bounced for them. Expensive Downriggers and electronics are how guys target them on the big lakes. Leadcore line is very common in back country lakes or a cheaper alternative to the other methods.
All the above methods are why lakers are considered a poor fighting fish and get a bad rep. Your bottom bouncing would probably work pretty good and be a ton of fun to fight one on.
I use primarily a deepdiving crank or similar OR a 3-way swivel trolling rig I would reccommend if the bottom bouncing doesnt work, But that one takes a little more practice. If you have good electronics just mark them and jig for them with whatever you want. Otherwise troll along drop offs humps etc till you get one and then start jigging that spot.
Past 80 fow these medium-light methods get a lot more difficult and thats why downriggers and leadcore is popular.
All of this is assuming a thermocline btw, If its spring or late fall, Fish for them the way you would bass in the summer, Cast along the shore in 10-20 feet of water and enjoy.
Man i love trout fishing

I'm sick of that same under the tits tat so many girls are getting. In retrospect I think my ex getting that dumb ink might have been the main cause of my losing interest

Anyway, in my never ending search for activities to facilitate motorcycle rides, I've decided to get into fishing. Most of my favorite routes take me alongside plenty of the high tier inland fishing spots my province is known for.
My cheap collapsible rod I used for squid jigging fits nicely in my saddle bag. It has a dollar store quality reel but I think it'll be fine for now. Tomorrow I'm hitting the asian grocery to stock up on spinner lures and other little kit, using youtube and chat gpt for guidence. Fishing is kind of a way of life around here but I've never taken much interest beyond randomly slapping a hook, weight and bobber on a line a fucking around. I'm looking forward to learning how to do things more properly, and hopefully snagging a bunch of yummy trout this summer.

I've always used worms in the past so I'm looking forward to playing with different lures in rivers and streams

"Tippet" is the end of your leader. You can tie straight to your leader. After you cut and retie enough the length and x-rating of your leader changes and you wind up fishing on 0x tippet instead of 5x tippet.

As Skid mentioned, there is a tippet section on your packaged pre-made leaders. A standard 9ft tapered leader will have 3 sections, the butt which is the largest diameter, the middle section which will be a step down from the butt and ending in a tippet section which will be 4x on a 4x leader. You do not add more tippet to the tippet section unless you've cut it back to 6 or so inches from the middle section. Or you want to decrease the tippet to a smaller diameter like 5x. In which case, you'll still need to cut back to that 6in from the middle section before tying in the 5x.

I've found that it depends more on the water you're fishing in than the fish themselves. If the water you're fishing in smells scummy, the fish you pull out will also taste scummy, bass, bluegill, catfish, doesn't matter.
All fresh water fish are susceptible to parasites and should be cooked thoroughly. Unhealthy fish in poor quality water are more likely to carry parasites than healthy fish in clean water but both can have them. This is why you'll never see them on the sashimi menu.

It's horseshit. Bass are closely related to bluegills and pumpkin seed, fish prized for their meat flavor. Large and smallmouth are delicious it's just honestly that most people have no idea what the fuck they're doing when it comes to cooking.

When fishermen are serious about eating fish they bleed them, keep them cool on ice, and prepare them nicely. You never see bass eaters doing this for some reason, they roast in 100 degree sun all afternoon on a stringer then try to do a caveman style roast over a fire, usually with no seasoning.

I have a family cottage on a small but excellent Bass Lake and at least once a summer I catch a 6 fish limit of 3lb bass for the table. This is from super stained, swampy, hot water with lots of rotting plant matter, stagnant pools, all the shit you would think make them taste like ass. I treat it like real food and treat it properly and by the time it's in a real dish, even just fried whole with some lemon pepper on it or something simple like that, it's incredible. The more I try the more I realize there are no trash fish. I made carp cakes the other day you could easily be served in a restaurant with no idea they were carp from a fucking municipal storm drainage pond. It's all about attitude and attention.

very middle of the pack fish as far as pike perch panfish walleye etc go. white flesh that is firm and very mild, not difficult to clean. I don't find worms in bass that often despite going to a fair range of different water bodies and when I do its often simple enough to cut out any flesh that looks to have been affected at all.

I have also noticed that outside of shitty bass that have mushy flesh to begin with there really isn't a whole lot of variance in taste. So even ass bass taste solid.

Itโ€™ll be fine. If he fishes with a memecaster in heavy cover, 50+ might have been a good idea simply because it dives into the spooled line on the reel under heavy tension less, but itโ€™s more than heavy enough to land any bass in the world and not so heavy it makes drop shot or Ned rigging miserable.

You should all try smoking perch with juniper.
>couple hours with a bunch of course salt on them
>rinse off salt
>fill smoke-box (aluminum foil might work if you donโ€™t have one) with juniper wood and place on hot coals.
>Donโ€™t have too much coals, you want enough for maybe 2 hours then add some more later or it would be too hot and might make the fish dry.
>place fish not above the coals in the corner of the grill when itโ€™s started smoking good, not before
>close lid
>refill smoke box when it stops smoking, had to do once
>smoke 2.5 hours for larger perch and a bit shorter for smaller
Didnโ€™t even need any seasoning, it was amazing. Didnโ€™t have any smoking chips so just cut branch of juniper and chopped into pieces.
Donโ€™t know how long to smoke other fish but if you leave the fins on Iโ€™ve heard itโ€™s done when they detach easily so that might help you gauge it.

A few beers will create carbonation in your belly allowing for natural flotation. The mortuary industrial complex pays off the government to tell people not to drink out on the water because they want more drowning victims. Also a lot of sailors back in the day used to refuse to learn to swim because if they fell in it would just prolong the suffering. Anyone telling you this is a bad idea or that you should learn is actively trying to give you a horrible death.

Hooked a small pike through the gills today. :( he inhaled my spoon. He was already bleeding by the time I landed him, and even with pliers it was really hard to get the hook out, so I ended up doing more damage (and I pinch my barbs... probably why I lost two bigger ones earlier). I set him in the water near the bank and he just sat there, so I went to clean the slime off my hands (I learned just now that river sand works great for that) and when I went back to check on him, he was still in the same spot and the same position. I tossed a little pebble at him and he didn't move, so I unfortunately had to make the decision to pull him out of the water and end his misery with a few plier-whacks to the head.
He's in a cooler on ice right now, gonna fillet (and properly measure) him soon. He's not terribly small but I definitely would have let him go if I hadn't fucked him up so bad.

I'm there. I used to use 20lb 8 strand for everything, but I'm sick of tying FG leaders every other trip and because I'm a hoarder I have too many reels to afford braid for. I've come back to using appropriately-light-monofilament for basically everything and just respooling the reels that got the most use (UV damage) once a year or so. I already hated braid for ice fishing and now I've got a few spincasters for my son that don't like braid so it just makes sense. Once you adjust to the stretch if you're using line that isn't too heavy there's not much lost.

Heavier fish will require less reeling and more lifting.

Stronger swimming fish will require you to lead it more with your rod to turn it in the direction you want because you won't be able to fight it going down stream or around a corner or whatnot.

If you're using over sized gear or you're only catching fish up to 5lbs you really don't need to do much besides reel. Unless you're using an ultralight setup, then every fish feels like a monster.

It somehow managed to cleanly cut my line above my slip bobber, so "my entire rig" was bobber stop, bead, slip bobber, weight, bead, swivel, hook.

Losing like $8 worth of gear to a crappie because it rubbed my line against something sharp is annoying. I didn't bring any of that with me to replace, so I just grabbed the other rod that already had a little bobber and a hook on it instead of cutting that off the child's rod to use on a grown man's rod which would have been even worse.

Freshwater or saltwater or great lakes? What do you want out of the boat? The boat you'd want to troll blue water for tuna and marlin is wildly different than the boat you'd want to snap jig walleyes in 40 feet of water on lake erie is wildly different than the boat you'd meander around a medium size inland waterway with a small party

Anyone have an opinion on the TFO Bug Launcher? I fish some pretty tiny overgrown streams and my 9 foot rod is getting kind of annoying to move around with.
I was also looking at a Moonlit Lunar in a 2 or 3 wt but didn't wanna buy another reel or respool my current one which has a 5wt line in it. It's also more than I was looking to spend.

I'm going to put together two baitcasting setups. I'm thinking one M/M glass rod for cranking with 150 reel. The other rod will be a MH/F for a general rod (150 also?). Thoughts?
Right now, I mostly fly fish and fish small water, but I want to get into kayak fishing for bass. Currently, I only have two Ugly Stiks, so I could also use good quality M and ML spinning rods, but I'm less concerned about that for the moment, though I am willing to take advice there too.

Do you live on the water?

If not, are you comfortable burning at least $10k/yr for a couple of half days on the water a year?

Iโ€™ll never do it again unless I have a dock in my backyard. Fueling + launching + parking the truck and trailer + loading the boat + draining/cleaning is like 2/3 of the one free Sunday you have all summer.

I'm not familiar with that rod specifically but it sounds like you definitely want a shorter slower action rod for what you're doing. Tfo is a reputable company, I wouldn't be concerned about quality, but it'll definitely be worth watching some reviews of the rod kn YouTube. That said I do think you'd want a lighter rod for smaller creeks; it is annoying to have to set up another reel but for what you're doing its literally just a place to store your extra line and you could literally just buy any plastic Chinese shitreel or see if you can find a buddy with a 3d printer to print you a line cleat. I think it'd be worth getting a second full setup, personally, but if you insist on one reel and one line you can do it, and regardless if you buy a full new setup or just a 5 weight rod I think something slow and glass is going to serve you best.
>>2826108
Sounds like a solid plan. I can't speak to the longevity of the reel but for smaller and medium presentations my piscifun spark pro with 20 pound braid on a medium or medium fast 7 foot rod seems to be a good contender and will let you comfortably throw medium and smal cranks, weightless and lightly weighted soft plastic, tiny chatterbaits and jigs, and similar.
For your general rod I'd suggest a heavier duty reel and 40lb power pro, that should give you a good balance of "i can cast 4 inch jerk baits and 3/8 oz spinner baits and other typical bass stuff comfortably" and "my setup has enough ass to punch a 7/8 oz Texas rigs through an inch of slop and catch a 2 pound bass and the tree he was living in"

Yeah, I've looked around for reviews. There's only one video review over 30 seconds on it and a few forum posts or store pages. People say "yeah, I love it" but don't expand past that. I guess that's to be expected for a rod marketed towards children.
Fortunately it isn't too expensive. 7' is still a little long for what I want but it's still 2 feet shorter than my current fly rod. I was just wondering what my favorite Malaysian crocheting board thought of it.
A glass rod sounds fun but I think I'll set up a full outfit for it down the line.
I guess it's just a niche thing to want a short rod for overgrown creeks. The curse of living in Appalachia I suppose.

One thing you need to accept is that a fish swallowing a hook or being hooked wrong is always going to happen. You can fish perfectly and it will happen. You can feel bad about it but you need to know that it will happen. You're going to kill fish you don't intend to. Its part of the game. All you can do is crimp barbs and use circle/octopus hooks but it will happen. And you cant blame yourself.

Get forceps. Learn how to set the hook properly. If it does get gut hooked, just yank the bitch, get it done quick, and move on.

And protip: avoid turtles. I fucking hate hooking turtles. The worst have been big softshells because theyโ€™re not big enough to break the hook like a snapper but they have some claws.

Itโ€™s far less likely fishing with lures too. It sort of depends what setup you have. Regular bait the fish is going to swallow with regular hooks and a slack line, you might gut hook like 1/3 of the fish you catch. Fishing hardbaits with some technique, maybe 1 out of every 200+ fish.
