First for best telescopic rod is the one you exchanged for a 3pc.
Talk about fishin
Wife got a bunch of sunfish on my fly rod today, she got 5 and I got 6 plus 1 baby bass.
Started fishing for carp over here in the US and I think itโs pretty addicting. Unpressured, relatively, and youโd be hard pressed to find a better fight in your average pond. Only drawback is that sitting around and waiting for your drag to rip is kinda boring, but Iโve taken a bass rod out to play with in the mean time and Iโm having a blast.

Assuming its mono or flouro, one a year is safest. 3-5 for braid but it depends on usage and storage, like on a car. Youll get the same mileage with cheap, gently used and properly stored mono/flouro as you do decent used and abused braid
>>2823442Anon, i know you put your turkey in the fridge for a day or two before turkey day. If you aint civilised, then:

I'm such a fucking retard and i'm still pissed about it today
>went fishing to a lake yesterday afternoon where i usually just fish with rainworms
>never caught there anything else besides some small fish
>yesterday decided to try out some new fishing maize flavor for next time
>whole afternoon nothing
>then throw some more maize to lure in fish
>thinking to myself that i should rather stick to rainworms here again
>suddenly the bobber goes nuts
>something is on
>it's a fucking prime carp
>beautiful as hell and around 4-5kg judging from the looks
>not a trophy fish but a great catch
>fuck i don't have a fishing net because i never caught/seen something as big here
>get the fish to the shore
>could already touch him
>want to grab him out with my hand
>be a retard and try to lift him some more with the line and oh my who would have thought the hook snaps away from line under the swivel
>he gets away
There was no other activity the whole afternoon besides that, he literally was gods gift for me but i fuck it up, even the weather changed when he snapped off as it started being windy as hell so the bobber didn't even stay still anymore
Pic related is a quick picture i took of him before i fucked it up
>>2823509well it's not like you were gonna eat him (unless you're chinese I guess), so you got to experience the best parts of catching a fish anyway
>>2823516but still, i don't consider that i really caught him since i didn't get him completely out of the water, guess i really need to always take a fishing net with me when going out
>>2823473 (OP)This is my baby boy.
>>2823473 (OP)That woman is horrendous. She was flat af, got fake tits (like most of the bitches posted here), and then got a tattoos to hide the scar. Still super obvious.

I think its wonton wasteful.I insulted you too readily anon, leafs get defensive when it comes to lakers. I specifically love backcountry lakers from the canoe and not great lakes where I'm assuming those come from.
Here's a nice walleye for that other other anon
>>2823570Nice! Where are you located and howโd you catch him?
Hereโs a photo of a 24โ I caught off the the dock (hopped in boat to measure her) last Sunday. Proceeded to fish a few hours every day the next five without getting a second walleye. Trying paddle tail plastics for the first time.
>>2823585I caught that in Lady Evelyn provincial park on a Williams w30 in silver and blue I think, along a drop off I thought might be nice, didn't have a measure but probably just under 20. I find that's where they start getting that "whoa" level of big, Especially on yours. That one is FAT anon whered you get it?
I caught 4 or 5 Wally's on the trip all around that size that one was probably the biggest, I don't know if they get much bigger in backcountry lakes.
>>2823600A 100 acre lake near Rhinelander Wisconsin. One of these years Iโll get up to Canada to enjoy its glorious lakes.
I caught my 2nd fish ever today and ate it. a decent sized bluegill. i gave it 3 blows to the head with one of those kitchen mallets and its head split open. everyone in my family says they feel bad for the fish and i went too far.
Temps are high, water is low, all I can catch is bluegill and it's so sad.
If fish could cry and scream would you still fish?
>>2823637i wish i could catch bluegill
they don't live in my area of north america though
>>2823642yeah

If I liked flat chested women, I'd be fine with men. Women with fake tits are disgusting and are worse than being flat chested. I much prefer big booba, however.
Took only the ultralights for me and my young son today. These 3 lb bass were fucking crazy fun, every hookup was a 4 minute fight with lots of jumps. He has a little micro spincast with 4 lb line and he was corked on even 1lbers. It was his first trip with multiple hands-off by dad catches and he was fucking stoked.
>>2823509Looks to be around 2kg just from the picture, he's got a little face like a small carp. Take it as a lesson to bring a net next time and catch the big ones. Carp are great fun, and if you can manage bones they actually eat pretty well also, though judging by your gay little bobber setup I'm betting you're a bong and you'd rather name them and dress them up in little outfits or whatever the fuck instead of murdering them for their carbon.
What boots/shoes do you have to fish in? Need a new pair and it's been a while.
>>2823901If the water isn't too cold, get a body glove water shoes from Costco. It's like $25 and pretty good deal
>>2823901https://a.co/d/fT3ocla
Waterproof hiking boots. For everyday fishing/hiking. Good for walking through shallow water, but don't go above half way or they'll start taking in water.

Korkers if I'm wading. I have waders, but usually just wear quick dry shorts and neoprene socks.
>>2823887he was fatter around his stomach and also judging from seeing him near, i got a 10kg carp once but i wasn't fishing with a bobber which is also what i didn't expect to catch with this catch (pic related is how i normally fish for carps) not with a bobber and maize kek
and no im not a bong, but i've eaten a carp before and i don't really like them because it's just fat and no meat mostly
>>2823901Splurged on these at decathlon after only ever spending like 30$ on cheapie rain boots, and they are worth it. Very nice boots, had them for years no leaks, comfortable, and nice and tall for wading
>>2823860No it's a real fish just the light that looks a little weird. Caught 5 of these guys but released them again because they don't taste good.
Well, I'm back from a trip to Mallorca, mostly for scuba diving, but I expected very easy light rock and surf fishing like last September, with plenty of predatory fish really close to the coastline. I snorkeled around the fishing spots and they were devoid of pretty much anything during the day, when last year i hooked anything from barracudas to amberjacks (best fighters I ever got) and blue runners and saw numerous surface chases, this year all I saw was seabreams and even then, it seems the largest ones were barely feeding. I saved my sessions by building some paternoster rigs with sandworms imitations, but damn was that frustrating. I don't know if i simply didn't knew the proper spots for the season or if the entire area was like that.
So why are Orvis rods and reels so expensive? It seems like their stuff is way more expensive then it should be.
Whatโs your opinion on Trout Unlimited? Are they a good organization or just a load of nothing?
>>2823998Orvis, like Sage (Farbank), is a mid to higher end company that has everything to complete your fly fishing lifestyle. Orvis has been around for over 100 years. A while back, their quality deteriorated significantly, but now, they seem to make quality products. I would have no issue about buying an Orvis product. Their bags and flies are great. Pretty much everything in fly fishing is more expensive than it should be. If you just wanted to buy an Echo Lift Kit and buy nothing else, you'd be totally fine. Just upgrade the line if you stay in the sport for more than a few months.
>>2823999TU is one of a few good organizations that is improving fly fishing. They lobby for more angler access, improve streams, and buy streams for public use. The way I see TU and similar organizations is that they are for men in their 40's+ with some extra cash and a philanthropic urge. It's the men's equivalent of raising money for kids with leukemia or one of the many female-dominated philanthropic causes. If you're familiar with Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Whitetails Unlimited, or Pheasants Forever, it's like that.
>>2823998Everything fly fishing is way more expensive than it needs/should be. Even a Shakespeare rod and reel fly combo will cost you almost $100. While an entry level spinning combo will only cost $20-30.
>>2824004Why is this though? Is there a legit reason why fly fishing costs so much more?
>>2824005
>>2824006/shrug...elitism? Fly fishing is pretty niche
>>2824006They probably sell close to 500 spinning rigs to every fly rig. It's niche and small production. Even the cheapest Chinese fly reels are 30 bucks or so where the cheapest spinning reels are 2 or 3 dollars., it's expensive to tool up for small runs but if you know you can run the line basically nonstop you can spread the production cost out very thin and still make great money, not the case if you have to warehouse a stock while you wait for the small subgroup to buy them up. Basic economics .
Are all fishing flies really made by hand or are they machine made and people are just lying? A guy claimed every fly had to be made by hand.
>>2824011There's no fly tying machines it's all done by hand. Sometimes that hand is a Kenyan woman's who make 12 cents a fly. Sometimes it's a posh scotsman who ties flies that run $30/fly on the low end.
>>2823901Depends on what I'm doing
>>2823998Legacy- you're paying between 10% and 30% extra because it has orvis written on it.
>go to local trout pond
>tons of ripples from fish coming to the surface
>fuckers jumping out of the water all over the place
>all I catch after 2 hours is a literal fucking fingerling
>>2824016Related to what Skid said but not quite. Don't buy Solitude flies. My boss just bought a bunch. They're dogshit. I've got ethics, and some of these products I can't stand behind.
>>2824011>>2824016I just bout a bunch of flies from greatflies.com. I'm assuming they were tied by above mentioned Kenyan woman or someone else making very little per fly as they were only $6/dozen. That said, they all look very well tied.
>>2824028The only places you can really cut costs in flies is labor and hooks- and those are arguably the two most important parts. What good is a fly that falls apart before it catches a fish, and what good is a well tied fly on a garbage hook
Too windy to cast today, sucks cause itโs supposed to rain the rest of the week.

I am going to be smug about this for years.
>>2824105Teach me your ways Anon
Not a bad day just a bit of a bummer. I decided to throw streamers on my 3 WT euro rod that has been giving me trouble. Before I even tie on a fly, a big walleye swims up to my feet. I tied on a black articulated streamer. I was most interested in fishing Joe's Mini Crayfish, but I was not yet in the section where I thought it would shine. Casting the streamer was easy, but it would be the only I casted it. I hooked into a carp and fought it for a couple minutes. I had 4X on but the problem was the 3 WT having no backbone. I broke off when I put the line in hand. I was concerned about snapping the rod tge whole time, despite having 0 drag. I was pretty pissed about losing the streamer my friend tied, but this experience just gives me motivation to get out there with my 8 WT and target those carp. The coolest part is that I think the carp actually went for the streamer. I wasn't snagging or jerking the fly, and the hook was in or around the mouth.
>>2824101I was using nightcrawlers and powerbait (the kind that's like a putty that you scoop out and form onto your hook)
>>2824097There aren't any panfish where I live unfortunately. There's walleye, trout (stocked), and yellow perch though.
There are also northern pike and they're fun to fight. Bit of a pain to get the y bones out though.
My new favorite hobby
>Get high
>Hike to remote stream
>Get more high
>Catch some beautiful trout
>>2824087Feeeeeeeeeeeeesh!
>>2824202I almost included Northern Pike in the list. Donโt worry about it, youโve made the cut friend.
>>2824176Why the fuck does everyone forget how to fight a fish when they catch something big get a grip people
No I will not talk to you while Iโm fishing, especially if youโre brown, no I wonโt let your son try out my gear, no I wonโt let you keep the fish I catch, I release them back.
>>2824204Yeah it's a peaceful hobby. I love the peace and quiet away from the wife and kids.
>>2824176That happens, all you can really do is keep a low rod angle and basically handling the fish. An 8 weight is a good idea, carp are fun on the fly. I really like fast glass for carp- the lower line speed gives a more delicate presentation and the extra modulus of glass gives me better fighting power imo- my bad ass glass was a great carp stick and my current 7 weight is superb.
A small.black streamer on a slow retrieve is absolutely something a carp would eat, too, so good odds you actually hooked it legally. I tie a carp fly I call a backwards bug, it's basically a rubber legs foxy clouser, it works great, and I switch between lead eyes and bead chain eyes depending on how fast I want it to sink.
>>2824204It's pretty hella
>>2824211Panic and excitement. Adrenaline turns the monkey brain off and the lizard brain doesn't know how to fight a fish, it can take a lot to train your nerves to still think while wrangling a lunker.

Tried top fishing with a float last night at the pay lake and nailed this monster. Sorry for the bad pic didn't have anyone to help me and the thing was absolutely tearing my fingers to shreds. Nothing like reeling one of these in unless you're on the ocean.

>>2824244I do, it's not cheaper than buying flies but you get more flies per dollar.
I really want this to be the year i catch a carp. What are some tips you guys can give me for it? Where to look for them, what rig is best, what's your preferred bait, etc? I live in arkansas, and there are lakes nearby that I know have them if that helps any.
>>2824280make sure you leave the invasive piece of shit on the bank to air drown
>>2823473 (OP)Check em dubs.
Matt has been busy doing a lot with that fishing florida water stuff huh?
I know I know, EVERYTHING has gone up in price, but tackle boxes I remember paying less than $30 for a good one and now...
How often do you go up to other fishermen to talk to? Do you just got right up to them or do you prefer to leave others alone?
>>2823870Because guys can't have many boobs even Skid has man boobs from being fat.
Can I add a thinner tippet to my leader? The stuff I have on it currently is too thick for my flies.
>>2824300Lol
Lmao
Yeah...
>>2824302Ideally I'd never interact with another angler outside the same boat. Just play it by ear and try to be courteous. if you can stay out of talking distance that's ideal but if you wind up onto of someone just be respectful and try not to intrude on them any more than you'd want them to intrude on you.
>>2824306True I have solid Bs I think
>>2824307That's perfectly fine assuming the tippet sizes aren't wildly different. Before tapered leaders theg used to be made by tying section
>>2824244If you just want to wet your toes buy a super aa vise from anywhere that sells it, preferably not Amazon, and independently purchase Dr slick cheap fly tying scissors and a griffin ceramic bobbin. Once you have that in the cart, pick your favorite colour of wooly bugger and buy the stuff you'll need to tie two dozen of them- 4x long streamer hooks in a size 4 or 6, strung marabou, strung saddle hackle, chenille, a spool of Danville 140 denier flat waxed nylon thread, all colored to match or compliment, and probably a side of pearl Krystal flash and .020" or .025* lead free wire you still spent 50 dollars tooling up and easily 25 dollars on rye flies themselves but for that 25 dollars you got 25 size 4 black wooly buggers instead of 12 assorted wooly buggers thar the shop tied (or some Kenyan woman)
>>2824300I picked up what looks like a tablet carrying case from goodwill for $3.
I fit a medium single layer plano box and a small two sided plano box, all my terminal tackle and bobbers and tools and shit, enough for 4+ people to fish for a day and lose a ton of shit.
Fuck tackle boxes just get a durable bag.
>>2824332>Before tapered leaders theg used to be made by tying sectionBefore tapered leaders . . . Tying sections of level monofilament or flourocarbon in progressively thinner sizes to create a tapered leader and a lot of people still tie (and some even sell) leaders constructed this way*
Anyone notice a difference between trimming top frog skirts, and just leaving it?1wyy
Are spinnerbaits good for snakeheads?
>>2824307If your tippet is too large for your fly's eye, you're either using too large of a leader to begin with or you've cut back to the middle taper.
If it's a brand new leader, use a smaller one unless it's your only leader, then go ahead. Try to keep the sections somewhat equal, for example, on a 9ft leader, 3 ft butt section, 3 ft middle and a 3 ft tippet. It doesn't need to be exact, but closer is usually better.
If you've cut back to the middle section, it's time(technically past time) to add more tippet. In the future, try and add more tippet before you hit the middle section.
>>2824225>I really like fast glass for carpDo you feel like a wizard when you pick up a carbon rod again?
Look at this shit. I fucked up my roll cast and got tangled with my leader. Now, my fly line is shredded. I've contacted the company, although there is no explicit warranty. I will see what they say and report back.
Spin fishing for the rest of the day was good. White bass, smallmouth, and catfish. The technique that worked was slowly retrieving a twister tail like I was swinging a wet fly.
>>2824280Carps are generally down in the mud, so if it's a deep lake fish on the ground either with some Boilies or if it's aint that deep with a bobber and some maize
>rigdoesn't matter unless you go for some 20kg monster
Is there something for fly fishing like in bait casting where instead of tying on every fly, thereโs an attachment where I can just hook it to?
>>2824417Yes, but don't use them for anything other than a metal leader. Git gud at tying knots. Learn the uni knot and practice. If that's a barrier for you, find some other hobby.
>>2824356It is kinda funny pucking up my friends 100 dollar starter rod and casting an entire fly line like "huh. Cool!"
>>2824364>>2824365Shit sucks yo. You could try to melt it back in to place or you cam just finish peeling that loose Chunk off. Either way be careful not to damage the core. If it's close enough to the end you can also get away with cutting it.
>>2824417Yes but snaps break and you'll be better off with knots
>>2824419I rarely even use them on metal leader I permanently affix 8-12 inches of leader to each musky fly and swap flies with a loop to loop connection. The only time I really swap to snaps on wire is if there's hammer handles around that im not targeting and I don't want to lose a bunch of bass flies.
>>2824419You can tie a perfection loop on the end of your leader and then another at the end of a section of mono tied to the fly for quick change flies at the expense of more potential tangles and compromises in presentation so not ideal for finesse work or spooky fish.
>>2824417It doesn't get much easier than a clinch knot. I use test hook clips to hold my fly by the bend of the hook. run the line through the eye of the hook, spin it 5 times and run the tag end through the gap below the twists and above the eye of the hook. Pinch the tag and fly lube the line with spit and pull the main line tight. I waste very little line with only about a quarter to half inch of tag to cut.
Some guy keeps bullying me off the fishing dock my city built. Iโll approach the dock and heโll start casting his fly fishing line further behind him while looking at me.
>>2824153>Teach me your ways AnonLook for old people selling shit on card tables. Yard sales, estate sales, gun shows, etc.
FB marketplace and craigslist are good places to look as well, and you can sometimes score deals on ebay if you search for lots.
>>2824417>Is there something for fly fishing like in bait casting where instead of tying on every fly, thereโs an attachment where I can just hook it to?That's what tippet rings are for. Attach like 18" of tippet material to the fly with a loop at the bitter end and then just do a loop-to-loop connection with the tippet ring and you're set.
>>2824325Fuck yeah walleye and century Sam's that's the fucking life right there
>>2824280Bolt rig, and hair rig. 2 or 3 oz sinker with a 6-8" lead to a hair rig hook with 3 or 4 pieces of corn on it, that's the formula. Toss that out and spread some more corn in the area. Hair rig keeps the hook exposed (use a razor sharp offset hook) and the heavy weight makes sure it drives home when the carp feels the sting and takes off.
Pic is the cool Chinese man I taught how to carp fish I think he's dead now I miss him.
how do i look cool while casting?
>>2824490whipping that motherfucker
>>2824490Don't be fat. Don't dress like a dweeb. Don't botch it. That's pretty much it, a well executed cast is a decently cool body motion, but fat dweebs start high jump competition from a pit if you know what I mean.
I absolutely love the Frabill teardrop trout net. It is far superior to any other net due to its weight, price, and handle. Does anyone know what it is made out of? It's baffling to me that no fly fishing company has ever made a net that comes close to this one. There is no way that I would ever buy a heavier net that costs more.
>>2824490Two hand overhead cast hard enough it makes a nice whipping noise every single time you cast or you'll look like a little girl baby.
Itโs not me that sucks at fishing, the fish just donโt feel like biting today.
>>2824516I always wonder that during a slow day.
>>2823473 (OP)Bebzy get the fuck in here and say hi at least :[

Skid you tied some flies for me back in 2022, some trout flies etc back when I lived in ohio. In california now after some rough shit happened in life and finally got back into fishing with my wife and got her hooked on it. Caught a bunch of bluegill with her last week and gonna try a creek for some bass on those streamers, thanks for the flies dude
I went (sea) fishing for the first time along the shore today and HOLY SHIT it felt great.
I didn't catch anything because I had my drag set way too lose like a retard and I ended up losing my lure on a rock/kelp forest and my knot failed, but it was insane being out there against the tide and the cliffs in backdrop.
I'm going to try out spoons next time. I WILL catch a bass this summer.
At what level of fishing does it get to a point where I need to learn anything other than Palomar Knot and Uni Knot? Palomar Knot for lures and most ties with Uni Knot as a backup of my hands aren't working or the line is finicky. Double Uni for tying leaders, which is just a standard Uni times 2.
>>2824555>Hasn't learned a clinch knot or improved clinch knotHave you even been fishing? It's the only knot you need.
>>2824532>>2823473 (OP)Also, go fishing, ffs
>>2824546The best way to practice knots is to go to home depot and buy an eye bolt and then just start winding that "free" loading twine around your palm until you're satisfied or until someone bothers you about it. If they bother you about it cut it off ASAP and promptly leave, flashing the eye bolt and saying some bullshit about securing your load on your way through the door way. Then while you watch YouTube or movies or whatever idly, but intently, tie knots on the eye bolt. The palomar knot is strongest, clinch knot is fastest, uni knot most versatile, and kreh loop/no-slip mono loop is my go to loop knot to connect line to lure.
>>2824555When line gets too heavy for knots, when you want loop knots, and when you want something faster than the uni knot. With the pinch and twist method you can tie a clinch knot in under 10 seconds. With a little practice.
>>2824555>>2824562The clinch and improved clinch suck. For leader knots, I prefer the blood knot, but the double uni works too. If you are tying braid to mono, Albright. If you are tying fly line to backing, nailless nail knot.
>>2824545It's fantastic to hear that. Three seasons and most of a continent later and my flies are still serving you. I wish you and your wife all the best, and post fish for us.
>>2824566You got a website where you sell your flies?
Tried bottom bouncing for pike today. Threw out the drift sock and just let a 3" dead minnow float along about a foot off bottom in 20fow. Did really well. Got 3 with 2 well over 5lbs. Much more fun fighting them with a single 1oz sinker vs 3 colors of lead. Anyone try that or more of a mooching technique for lake trout?
>>2824575A website no I just do orders in person or via email

Guys, I lost 40 lbs and my shit is fucking loose now (inb4 "lost 40 lbs? go find it!)
Recommend me some good breathable shirts with some UV protection and new pants. I don't care if I have to use suspenders. I was looking at stuff like Helikon Tex and MAYBE lightweight wool button down shirts? I like to dress business casual enough to blend into office then immediately go to the streams or lakes without having to change. >>2824562>It's the only knot you need.I've been fishing for only around 6-8 months seriously from scratch as an adult. I'll look into the knot tonight.
>>2824564>With the pinch and twist method you can tie a clinch knot in under 10 seconds. Is this true? The old (white) people who've given me their knowledge at the banks told me only the arts of the uni and pal.
>>2824565>AlbrightI got filtered by this one just trying to to tie a braid to flouro when rigging up my catfish pole once. It took me literally 20 minutes to get it done.
>>2824585>I've been fishing for only around 6-8 months seriously from scratch as an adult. I'll look into the knot tonight.I actually was kidding, it's just the first knot most people learn when they start fishing because it's simple enough a child can do it after showing them once and it's very quick.
>>2824578How much you usually charge?
>>2824585>>AlbrightIt took me several minutes the first try, but after that, I had no problems. Fast tying can be facilitated with using a finger to hold open the loop.
>>2824075Stawp it I'll blush
>>2824585Absolutely. If the line isn't already through the eye of the hook it usually takes me closer to 12-15 seconds but if I start a timer with the eye already threaded I cab have a clinch knot tied in about 8.5 seconds, well under 10. I literally just timed myself. Mind you I also didn't add trimming the tag to that time. All said and done, in the field, having a clinch knot tied realistically takes closer to 20-30 seconds depending on how much you fumble, it usually takes me longer to get a fly out of my box than to get said fly tied on.
>>2824610Depends on the flies. A single complex musky fly might take well over an hour to tie and run $30 or more, but a dozen wooly buggers on good hooks with tungsten beads I usually ask $30

>>2824498Anon im glad you posted this, Ive been looking for a new net. I have the same wooden trout net with rubber netting everyone has and its good but some of the fish ive been catching the past two years are just too big for it.
I do backcountry trips and dont want a big heavy net, The teardrop frabill in 19x23 looks like my best option but all the pictures online are shit. My current net is roughly 18x13.
What size do you have? Could you post a picture or two from above looking top down?
Whats the biggest fish you can land in it before it starts feeling risky or they flop out? I find about 24" is the length right now where its really hard to not lose them next to the canoe while netting them.
>>2824577That sounds fun anon!
lake trout are my favorite fish and ive never bottom bounced for them. Expensive Downriggers and electronics are how guys target them on the big lakes. Leadcore line is very common in back country lakes or a cheaper alternative to the other methods.
All the above methods are why lakers are considered a poor fighting fish and get a bad rep. Your bottom bouncing would probably work pretty good and be a ton of fun to fight one on.
I use primarily a deepdiving crank or similar OR a 3-way swivel trolling rig I would reccommend if the bottom bouncing doesnt work, But that one takes a little more practice. If you have good electronics just mark them and jig for them with whatever you want. Otherwise troll along drop offs humps etc till you get one and then start jigging that spot.
Past 80 fow these medium-light methods get a lot more difficult and thats why downriggers and leadcore is popular.
All of this is assuming a thermocline btw, If its spring or late fall, Fish for them the way you would bass in the summer, Cast along the shore in 10-20 feet of water and enjoy.
Man i love trout fishing
>>2823473 (OP)I'm sick of that same under the tits tat so many girls are getting. In retrospect I think my ex getting that dumb ink might have been the main cause of my losing interest
Anyway, in my never ending search for activities to facilitate motorcycle rides, I've decided to get into fishing. Most of my favorite routes take me alongside plenty of the high tier inland fishing spots my province is known for.
My cheap collapsible rod I used for squid jigging fits nicely in my saddle bag. It has a dollar store quality reel but I think it'll be fine for now. Tomorrow I'm hitting the asian grocery to stock up on spinner lures and other little kit, using youtube and chat gpt for guidence. Fishing is kind of a way of life around here but I've never taken much interest beyond randomly slapping a hook, weight and bobber on a line a fucking around. I'm looking forward to learning how to do things more properly, and hopefully snagging a bunch of yummy trout this summer.
I've always used worms in the past so I'm looking forward to playing with different lures in rivers and streams
Whatโs the point of a tippet? Why canโt I just tie my flies onto my leader?
Look I'm tenkara fishing
>>2824688"Tippet" is the end of your leader. You can tie straight to your leader. After you cut and retie enough the length and x-rating of your leader changes and you wind up fishing on 0x tippet instead of 5x tippet.
>>2824691I've been thinking about getting a cane pole just to fuck around with when fishing is too easy. They any fun? Or just a novelty?
>>2824692>They any fun? Or just a novelty?Yes
>>2824688As Skid mentioned, there is a tippet section on your packaged pre-made leaders. A standard 9ft tapered leader will have 3 sections, the butt which is the largest diameter, the middle section which will be a step down from the butt and ending in a tippet section which will be 4x on a 4x leader. You do not add more tippet to the tippet section unless you've cut it back to 6 or so inches from the middle section. Or you want to decrease the tippet to a smaller diameter like 5x. In which case, you'll still need to cut back to that 6in from the middle section before tying in the 5x.

are people lying when they say bass have worms and that they taste bad?
>>2825000More like exaggerating. They're not always the best eating fish in a body of water but they're not bad, and they can have worms, but so can any other fish.
>>2824990I do get excited seeing cool shimmery yo-zuri lures. Fuck.
>>2825000I've found that it depends more on the water you're fishing in than the fish themselves. If the water you're fishing in smells scummy, the fish you pull out will also taste scummy, bass, bluegill, catfish, doesn't matter.
All fresh water fish are susceptible to parasites and should be cooked thoroughly. Unhealthy fish in poor quality water are more likely to carry parasites than healthy fish in clean water but both can have them. This is why you'll never see them on the sashimi menu.
>>2825000>>2825030It's horseshit. Bass are closely related to bluegills and pumpkin seed, fish prized for their meat flavor. Large and smallmouth are delicious it's just honestly that most people have no idea what the fuck they're doing when it comes to cooking.
When fishermen are serious about eating fish they bleed them, keep them cool on ice, and prepare them nicely. You never see bass eaters doing this for some reason, they roast in 100 degree sun all afternoon on a stringer then try to do a caveman style roast over a fire, usually with no seasoning.
I have a family cottage on a small but excellent Bass Lake and at least once a summer I catch a 6 fish limit of 3lb bass for the table. This is from super stained, swampy, hot water with lots of rotting plant matter, stagnant pools, all the shit you would think make them taste like ass. I treat it like real food and treat it properly and by the time it's in a real dish, even just fried whole with some lemon pepper on it or something simple like that, it's incredible. The more I try the more I realize there are no trash fish. I made carp cakes the other day you could easily be served in a restaurant with no idea they were carp from a fucking municipal storm drainage pond. It's all about attitude and attention.
>>2825000very middle of the pack fish as far as pike perch panfish walleye etc go. white flesh that is firm and very mild, not difficult to clean. I don't find worms in bass that often despite going to a fair range of different water bodies and when I do its often simple enough to cut out any flesh that looks to have been affected at all.
I have also noticed that outside of shitty bass that have mushy flesh to begin with there really isn't a whole lot of variance in taste. So even ass bass taste solid.
>>2824776If I only enjoyed fishing when I caught a fish, I'd never go.

I got my nephew this since i had a giftcard. is this good line for bass?
>>2825178Itโll be fine. If he fishes with a memecaster in heavy cover, 50+ might have been a good idea simply because it dives into the spooled line on the reel under heavy tension less, but itโs more than heavy enough to land any bass in the world and not so heavy it makes drop shot or Ned rigging miserable.

I took my first trip to the lower McCloud river today. Hit a couple spots at the Ah-Di-Na Campground and another halfway between there and the conservancy. Didn't catch anything, but it was beautiful if a tad hot. I saw this stonefly sitting on a rock, so I tied on a #6 salmonfly pattern. The body was the wrong color, orangy peach vs golden. But the size and shape were pretty close.

You should all try smoking perch with juniper.
>couple hours with a bunch of course salt on them
>rinse off salt
>fill smoke-box (aluminum foil might work if you donโt have one) with juniper wood and place on hot coals.
>Donโt have too much coals, you want enough for maybe 2 hours then add some more later or it would be too hot and might make the fish dry.
>place fish not above the coals in the corner of the grill when itโs started smoking good, not before
>close lid
>refill smoke box when it stops smoking, had to do once
>smoke 2.5 hours for larger perch and a bit shorter for smaller
Didnโt even need any seasoning, it was amazing. Didnโt have any smoking chips so just cut branch of juniper and chopped into pieces.
Donโt know how long to smoke other fish but if you leave the fins on Iโve heard itโs done when they detach easily so that might help you gauge it.
>>2825539>I wonder if Anon is still smoking those perch with juniper berries mixed in.

>>2825567Wear your vest, if you fall in lean back a bit and keep an arm crossed over the front if its one of those around the neck styled ones. If you dont panic youll be fine (but youll panic for sure).
>>2825569I kekked, but dont do this. It makes mustard gas.
>>2825688braid has great casting and sensitivity, but at the end of the day I don't use it anymore because I just can't stand the rough sound when reeling. and it gets wind knots easier.
>>2825714What braid are you using?
Hooked a small pike through the gills today. :( he inhaled my spoon. He was already bleeding by the time I landed him, and even with pliers it was really hard to get the hook out, so I ended up doing more damage (and I pinch my barbs... probably why I lost two bigger ones earlier). I set him in the water near the bank and he just sat there, so I went to clean the slime off my hands (I learned just now that river sand works great for that) and when I went back to check on him, he was still in the same spot and the same position. I tossed a little pebble at him and he didn't move, so I unfortunately had to make the decision to pull him out of the water and end his misery with a few plier-whacks to the head.
He's in a cooler on ice right now, gonna fillet (and properly measure) him soon. He's not terribly small but I definitely would have let him go if I hadn't fucked him up so bad.
>>2825714I'm there. I used to use 20lb 8 strand for everything, but I'm sick of tying FG leaders every other trip and because I'm a hoarder I have too many reels to afford braid for. I've come back to using appropriately-light-monofilament for basically everything and just respooling the reels that got the most use (UV damage) once a year or so. I already hated braid for ice fishing and now I've got a few spincasters for my son that don't like braid so it just makes sense. Once you adjust to the stretch if you're using line that isn't too heavy there's not much lost.
Is there meant to be a certain finesse to reeling a fish in? Cuz I just start cranking like a monkey the second I know I've properly set the hook.
>>2825720yea i also killed a small fishy yesterday, he got the hook so deep inside him i just couldn't get it out, all of my pliers or tools were to big for his small mouth so i ended up ripping everything of his intestines out and then he was already dead when i put him in the water, was heartbreaking
can someone explain why this keeps happening? when i try to throw the float out with more power/for bigger distance often it just tangles around itself and then i wonder why nothing bites the hook, till i reel in and see this shit
so the hook line tangles around the swivel somehow
>>2825730Heavier fish will require less reeling and more lifting.
Stronger swimming fish will require you to lead it more with your rod to turn it in the direction you want because you won't be able to fight it going down stream or around a corner or whatnot.
If you're using over sized gear or you're only catching fish up to 5lbs you really don't need to do much besides reel. Unless you're using an ultralight setup, then every fish feels like a monster.
>>2825741Leader is too long/light so its coming back over the bobber during pong casts. You could add a couple split shots to the leader and try to slow the line down as it comes off the spool at the end of your cast so that it straightens out before hitting the water.

>Pic related, xrap 6 and a 5 inch bluegillI'm actually casting that little thing comfortably and consistently it's kinda wild.
>>2826038Freshwater or saltwater or great lakes? What do you want out of the boat? The boat you'd want to troll blue water for tuna and marlin is wildly different than the boat you'd want to snap jig walleyes in 40 feet of water on lake erie is wildly different than the boat you'd meander around a medium size inland waterway with a small party
>Order a nice rod off of amazon
>Arrives in a weirdly short and flat package
>With a hole in the side
>With the rod sticking through it, completely broken
I don't know why I try to have nice things. There's only disposable shit rods of $400 bullshit in town so I thought I'd take my chances, it wasn't worth the time or effort.
Anyone have an opinion on the TFO Bug Launcher? I fish some pretty tiny overgrown streams and my 9 foot rod is getting kind of annoying to move around with.
I was also looking at a Moonlit Lunar in a 2 or 3 wt but didn't wanna buy another reel or respool my current one which has a 5wt line in it. It's also more than I was looking to spend.
>>2826087I ordered a rod from Sportsman Warehouse and it came in a torn up, half open, bent box. Fortunately the rod wasn't broken, somehow. A lot of these sellers give no fucks when packing rods.
>>2826087Never buy rods/reels from Amazon. I've tried it 10 times and 8 of those times they either sent me the wrong item, the item was broken, or both. You're better off buying from a different company where the employees actually know what they're doing
>>2823901For boots, I use the uninsulated LaCrosse AlphaBurlys. I also wear Keen Targhees when I'm not planning on getting in any water. I like the Simms Fly Weight boots for wet wading / waders. I wear normal shoes a lot too. I'm thinking about getting some Crocs for kayak fishing and pre/post-wading
>>2826091It's good to have multiple setups. Sometimes, that means multiple rods on the same reel but with different spools. A good, budget-friendly choice is the Echo Lift.
I'm going to put together two baitcasting setups. I'm thinking one M/M glass rod for cranking with 150 reel. The other rod will be a MH/F for a general rod (150 also?). Thoughts?
Right now, I mostly fly fish and fish small water, but I want to get into kayak fishing for bass. Currently, I only have two Ugly Stiks, so I could also use good quality M and ML spinning rods, but I'm less concerned about that for the moment, though I am willing to take advice there too.
>>2826106Thanks chatGPT! That didn't at all answer my question.
>>2826038Do you live on the water?
If not, are you comfortable burning at least $10k/yr for a couple of half days on the water a year?
Iโll never do it again unless I have a dock in my backyard. Fueling + launching + parking the truck and trailer + loading the boat + draining/cleaning is like 2/3 of the one free Sunday you have all summer.
>>2826091I'm not familiar with that rod specifically but it sounds like you definitely want a shorter slower action rod for what you're doing. Tfo is a reputable company, I wouldn't be concerned about quality, but it'll definitely be worth watching some reviews of the rod kn YouTube. That said I do think you'd want a lighter rod for smaller creeks; it is annoying to have to set up another reel but for what you're doing its literally just a place to store your extra line and you could literally just buy any plastic Chinese shitreel or see if you can find a buddy with a 3d printer to print you a line cleat. I think it'd be worth getting a second full setup, personally, but if you insist on one reel and one line you can do it, and regardless if you buy a full new setup or just a 5 weight rod I think something slow and glass is going to serve you best.
>>2826108Sounds like a solid plan. I can't speak to the longevity of the reel but for smaller and medium presentations my piscifun spark pro with 20 pound braid on a medium or medium fast 7 foot rod seems to be a good contender and will let you comfortably throw medium and smal cranks, weightless and lightly weighted soft plastic, tiny chatterbaits and jigs, and similar.
For your general rod I'd suggest a heavier duty reel and 40lb power pro, that should give you a good balance of "i can cast 4 inch jerk baits and 3/8 oz spinner baits and other typical bass stuff comfortably" and "my setup has enough ass to punch a 7/8 oz Texas rigs through an inch of slop and catch a 2 pound bass and the tree he was living in"
Cmon fags only 12 more posts till fresh bread
>>2826111NTA but my dad worked 2 jobs when I was a kid and still easily took my brother and I fishing on the bass boat twice a week. It can't possibly be that difficult to maintain a boat unless you actually live hundreds of miles from water to put it in.

First one of the season. Caught him about 2 weeks ago on a Gulp. Then caught like 10 scup and sea robins and no more flounder. I will do better this weekend.
hello /out/ i wanna get into fishing, but i'm scared of the hook going into the fish weirdly and being unable to take it out. any tips surrounding this? i don't wanna hurt the fish more than i have to.
>>2826128Yeah, I've looked around for reviews. There's only one video review over 30 seconds on it and a few forum posts or store pages. People say "yeah, I love it" but don't expand past that. I guess that's to be expected for a rod marketed towards children.
Fortunately it isn't too expensive. 7' is still a little long for what I want but it's still 2 feet shorter than my current fly rod. I was just wondering what my favorite Malaysian crocheting board thought of it.
A glass rod sounds fun but I think I'll set up a full outfit for it down the line.
I guess it's just a niche thing to want a short rod for overgrown creeks. The curse of living in Appalachia I suppose.
>>2826177Get a pair of medium length hemostats to pull out the hooks easily. You could swap to circle hooks if you're REALLY concerned but hemostats do the job just fine.
>>2826177Circle hooks, which are in some states required if you are targeting certain species (like Stripers) and you can always crimp (use a pliers to squeeze the barbs down) on your hooks
>>2826178>>2826179thank you both for the advice. i'm eager to get into fishing but this has always held me back. your advice inspires confidence and i hope to report back to a thread like this soon with news of my first catch!
>>2826184One thing you need to accept is that a fish swallowing a hook or being hooked wrong is always going to happen. You can fish perfectly and it will happen. You can feel bad about it but you need to know that it will happen. You're going to kill fish you don't intend to. Its part of the game. All you can do is crimp barbs and use circle/octopus hooks but it will happen. And you cant blame yourself.
>>2826185thanks. i'm sure i can learn to live with it, and i'll make sure to crimp my barbs, so at least i can say i did everything in my power to hurt the fish as little as possible.
when a fish does swallow a hook though, what do i do? do i just cut the line and hope for the best? mercy kill it?
>>2826160He must have really hated your mom.
>>2826177Get forceps. Learn how to set the hook properly. If it does get gut hooked, just yank the bitch, get it done quick, and move on.
And protip: avoid turtles. I fucking hate hooking turtles. The worst have been big softshells because theyโre not big enough to break the hook like a snapper but they have some claws.
>>2826142Workin on it bbygurl
>>2826188Itโs far less likely fishing with lures too. It sort of depends what setup you have. Regular bait the fish is going to swallow with regular hooks and a slack line, you might gut hook like 1/3 of the fish you catch. Fishing hardbaits with some technique, maybe 1 out of every 200+ fish.
>Fresh Skid Dinks!!!!!>>2826228>>2826228>>2826228>>2826228Also Iโm gonna need some anons to help post sloots fishin, I literally have one more saved after 500+ threads.
If you werenโt here for the original, we need sloots to find the catalog. If we post dink flounder laying in grass, itโs impossible to find among the other /out/ threads. Tiddies in bikinis catch your eye because science.
