I looked more in to the bug launcher and medium fast seems faster than id want for overgrown creeks. I'm going to insist that its worth your while to get a new setup for it and im going to suggest the cabrlas cgr. Its super slow action, and ive used mine to harass creek chubs in a drainage ditch I could step over while I was on lunch breaks. The only way to/from was game trails through the woods.
>>2826177
If the fish are hooked that badly its often better to cut your line than try to wrestle the hook out. Barbless helps though.

Wanted to mention that if you insist back that you get a 5 weight that there is actually a 5 weight cgr (or was it 6? Regardless your 5 weight line will load it fine because of the slow action.

I was looking at the CGR too, but didn't know there were two variants. I wrote it off because I was looking at the non-White River version because it had some bad reviews. Don't know what the difference is, they look the same.
The 4wt is 6'6" so that might be perfect. I can just overline with my 5wt reel and be okay. I'll have to think on it.

I would caution you against a 6'6" fly rod. They are very small, and I would advise against over lining it, based on my experience casting a rod this size. A shorter rod will be less accurate, and there are virtually no times in which you will need to use a rod that short. As long as you aren't fishing tenkara, you can use 10 ft rods in heavy cover. I have done it before. But when you get out in the open, that 6'6" will not be able to justify it's performance.
Anonymous No.2826275
>>2826271
If you have the money to get a Victory, do so, I will never hesitate to recommend a Victory even if a person might be looking at even more expensive rods, but while the BassX rods are good, I just don't know if they're actually better than a similar priced Daiwa or Shimano.
>>2826270
Largely it's about spool capacity. Some models will also gain some drag capacity and retrieve speed as you size up, so you'll have to look at the specs for the specific model you're looking at. Bigger spool means bigger frame means heavier and clunkier to hold, so generally I say pick the smallest with the appropriate retrieve speed, capacity, and drag.

spool capacity and overall dimensions of the spool in many cases. the size of the frames and the gear also increases. everything correlates not only to the game you will be targeting with the size, but also the lure weight range it can effectively throw. every company is different, but 200+, especially 300+ is meant for heavy applications. meant for thicker diameter line and more of it, as well as throwing heavier lures. if you buy a 300 reel and intend to throw normal bass lures, you won't be very happy. same as if you buy a 80 size and then try to throw 2oz swimbaits for musky.

A major figure in the fly community, Kelly Galloup, has the same feelings as you and I. Yes, there is a fish whore factory. On Facebook, which is one of the places, boomers, and those trying to grab their attention, post pictures of these boat wenches constantly. The reason why they look so similarly generic, as if you asked AI to generate some trashy whores for you, is that they are all the kind of woman who want to be seen but have nothing going for them, hence the plastic surgery. They are soulless. They have no interests. Thus, they do only what is popular or what they perceive to be high status. Of course, for this class of bitches, high status does not mean escorting a distinguished gentlemen to the auction at Sotheby's but tagging along with Jimmy while he's at the storage locker auction.

Does anyone have any tips on catching long nose gar? I’m in the southern US. My bud hooked two and got them up to the boat on an artificial single hook minnow. But they cut the line when they saw us and tried to kick away. They don’t seem to put up much of a fight until they realize they are about to get pulled out of the water. I don’t even know how to get them on the boat with my bass net that has like a 1.5 foot width. The gar were like 3 feet long and probably 12 lbs

use a thick mono leader that they can't easily break off. the way they usually react to lures is they slowly go up to it for investigation, then gently grab it most of the time. that's why most people say not to set the hook right away. they will move it towards the back of their mouth after swimming away with it(at least real bait). that's when people set the hook because it's no longer in the boney part of the mouth.then again, that probably leads to a lot of swallowing which is not good. I've found that baits with multiple small hooks works well, whether that be 2 or 3 small trebles or singles. the main thing is that the small light wire hooks penetrate the boney mouth with much less force. I just give the rod a light tug after they grab it. lures like small topwaters. walking baits, poppers, etc. you have to be patient with them and slow it down though. a lot of times they won't chase a lure that is too fast. if you just do a little action to get their attention, then you let it sit for them to come up to, they usually just grab it when it's sitting there. they don't spook from lures easily, so you can just keep on casting it out near them. you're right though, they don't fight that hard until they get close to the bank and figure out what's going on, but a heavy leader should hold up. they do throw the lure at about a 50% clip though, just the nature of the boney mouth. doing the boomer rope lure trick is not good because they starve to death if you can't get it out, plus that's cheating.

How much time, monetary expense, car trips to different spots, and other investments dumped into starting out without getting even a SINGLE bite should I endure before I consider myself a failure starting out and possibly angler suicide as well.

I'm literally on like my 15th skunk in a row with 3-4 hour averages each trip. I've tried everything. Looked up all the popular rigs, learned a different knots tying those rigs, watched different YouTube videos on how to fish those rigs, looked into bass and catfish seasonal behavior, tried local popular spots at different times of day, bought 4 different rod setups, tried basically every type of bass lure, tried catfish dough baits/chicken liver/shrimp/worms etc.

I woke up at 3:30AM to get to a spot at 5AM for sunrise and then sat there with 3 catfish rod setups for 4 hours and then watched some old man that looked like one of those elderly Wal-Mart greeters come in and get more action than I have in 4 months in less than 80 minutes using the exact same rigging.

Suicide may be my only option at this point.

Beginner skunk anon from like a day or two ago. Still no fish, Trip Number 14 in a row. 6AM to 12AM session.

Went out again to the Bayou levee. Fished Texas Rigs off the banks/plant cover while having 2 Santee Rigged Catfish (Cut bait on one and chicken liver on the other) setups in rod holders. Used Egg Loop knot to secure the baits.

Got nothing except pulling in a turtle off the cut bait (pic related) that I probably killed just trying to unhook the circle hook from it, which I tried from as distantly as possible with my pliers. (Guided him back into the water, mouth injured after he basically took the hook. I was too pathetic of a failure to manage to get it out ).

Tried my Ultralight setup for around 30 minutes hoping for a pity Bluegill at the end, nothing.

Next session will be a morning Kayak session at the landing nearby, which as usual will result in nothing despite me mirroring an exact video of someone else fishing the location.

Considering angler suicide still.

I'm going to a cousin's wedding in Denver in August. I live in Iowa. I'm thinking of driving there and staying a few days extra to fish. I have qualms about fishing in Colorado because of how overrun it seems to be. In Iowa, if there is a car parked on a section of trout stream, you go some place else. I have rarely encountered fellow anglers on the water. I'm looking for that kind of experience without having to drive way out of my way. I'm aware that Nebraska has trout streams, but Nebraska seems to have a lot of fees. Could someone with knowledge of the area give me some pointers? I've never car camped before, but that's something I'd like to do.

Tbh not surprised you lost the first one fudhing that light, 10lb braid to 8lb mono was my ultralight setup that i promptly ditched for a slightky heavier rod with 15lb braid and usually 10 or 12 pound mono leader. Regardless ive been meaning to fish them for a while. I think im going to just put them with my senkos and flukes since those all run on the same rig.

14 pound mono with a loop knot is about as strong as 8 with a palomar, moves more freely, and has more abrasion resistance before the line starts to weaken below knot strength.

Those critiques aside thats an awesome fish and im sorry you lost the other one.

Heres a dink creek smallie on a 2 inch berkley ripple shad, 1/16 oz jig head, 12lb leader, and 15lb braid.

The biggest hassle about boat launches is the trailer maneuvering. If you can’t back a trailer, you’re going to have a hard day.
It’s not hard to tie your boat up after launching and good boat trailers are self centering on the rollers, so if you can’t get your trailer in straight and you don’t drive it too far into the lake or leave it too far out of the lake, it’s all piss easy from there.

If you wanna go full wizard mode, buy an autopilot equipped trolling motor with a remote and then you can dump your boat in, tell it to go fuck off off shore and wait for you, park your truck, and then have the boat drive to the dock and pick you up. This capability costs about $800 for the smallest and cheapest new trolling motors that will let you do this, and even though it’s 10 year old technology, it still makes people stare at you when you do it.
I have autopilot on my 18 foot v-hull but don’t have it on the 14 foot skiff, so I still launch both ways.
Anonymous No.2827668

launching the boat itself is easy and quick once you get used to it. if you live somewhere that has lots of boat ramp traffic, that does such though, mostly because you have to wait in line, maneuver around people parked in the wrong spots, and feel pressured to be fast so you don't hold people up... but launching the boat is the easy part, way easier than it seems to those who ave never done it. the boat ramps aren't as bad if you put in early in the morning and leave by lunch time, that's when all the recreational boaters come out in the warmer months. plus the hardcore fisherman that are at the ramp early know how to get in and out fast so they don't take up space or time. having said that, I only really kayak now, used to have a boat. I prefer to be able to launch anywhere, that keeps me away from boat ramp traffic. plus I just like the feeling more, think motorcycle vs car. plus, it's light exercise without really feeling like a chore.

Looking for some lures that might work for 1-2 hour breaks in the middle of the day type stuff, no live baits or breaking out the waders or anything like that. Targeting mostly stripers and blues, but really anything else is fine too.

I mostly used this setup for soaking chunk mackerel and casting shads and spoons but I mostly just caught stripers soaking bait. I caught a bunch of bluegill this weekend and it was fun. I want to catch trout though.
I'm using a weighted bobber, 6# mono line, treble hooks and nightcrawlers for the most part. Sometimes I swap out the worm for powerbait or a plastic worm lure with garlic scent.
I've never caught a trout with that setup. If I walk along shallow shores I'm reeling in bluegill like crazy. Is it where I'm casting or the line setup that's not working for trout?

Worm under a bobber will be snatched by bluegill way before a trout ever gets it, unless you're very lucky. You could catch one on it, but you'll catch a ton of bluegill before you do.

Powerbait (Dough, nuggets) floats, and under a bobber it probably isn't presenting well, likely floating up too high. On the other hand, a 3 way swivel used to bottom fish with powerbait is a great way to get trout, and bluegill don't like it as much as live bait worms. Though power bait works a lot better on stocked trout than wild.

I also have had zero luck floating plastic worms so I have no advice about that.

That explains it. I thought by casting deeper I'd hit more trout but there's bluegill out there too and they're getting it first.
>3 way swivel used to bottom fish with powerbait
I'll have to try this next time. I assume the concept is weight on one swivel sinks it to the bottom, powerbait rises with the hook and your last swivel is for the main line? That means no bobber and you're relying purely on watching the rod tip bounce?

first off, make sure your lure isn't falling TOO slowly. it can be just as bad as falling too quickly if it's literally falling at a creep. that will force you to have to cast with more effort and it will essentially jerk on initial startup. just start with bakes high and doing gentle side/roll casts until you build up thumb memory for feathering the spool. I suggest using a lure that is at least 1/2oz. just dial your brakes back one clock each time you have no overruns. overhead casts will result in disaster when you're new if it accidentally goes straight towards the ground. but when you do start trying overhead casts, remember to release much earlier than you think you should based on spinning reels. you want an arc cast.

I’ve been aiming for around 1/2oz to practice or heavier. Gentle lobs have worked the best so far. Guess it’s more practice on given it a smooth motion. I’m about 6-8 hours in over the past couple weeks. Braid comes when I stop blowing up the spool but so far so good at getting backlashes out.

jerky casts will cause problems, that's why having the spool tension too tight can cause fluff up early/mid cast. at the end of the day, your aim is to have loose spool tension, though no side to side slop, because that gives you the easiest start up inertia and casting distance/smoothness. training your thumb is what takes the reps. it is easier to backlash with looser spool tension, but the flipside is that you're also able to apply more thumb pressure throughout the cast without slowing down the spool as much. with tight spool tension it already wants to slow down with even the slightest pressure. another way you can tell if your spool tension needs to be loosened is if your lure goes to the left whenc asting instead of straight where you're aiming. that's from the slow inertia at startup. definitely not advising against having some spool tension as a beginner, but you have to realize when you're at the point in the learning process where it actually starts to harm your progress. most people are afraid to loosen it bit by bit, they just focus entirely on the brakes.

I’ve fished it. The river is full of huge ass trout, but they are highly pressured basically everywhere it’s legal to fish (Big Springs and a chunk is not legal to fish) and they are difficult to entice to strike.

Seriously, there’s nothing like seeing 25+ inch cutties stacked like cordwood in a bend and having them barely glance at your fly. It took me a week to catch a single cutthroat.
Skid !TCEaAwseXw No.2828592

Remember smooth is more important than fast. You want to accelerate smoothly until the very moment your thumb lets off. Your ultimate goal is for the spool to dump line at the same rate that your lure is flying, favoring slightly dragging because a backlash happens when your spool spins faster than your lure is flying. Make sure you play with your centrifugal or magnetic brakes, too.
And dont forget you can feather the spool, too, just barely touch thw spool for not even a moment can do a lot for slowing the spool and preventing a backlash. When i was first starting i would do it very often just before mid cast as backlash insuranceand just live with losing a little casting distance over it

i'm talking like ~60 acres surface area and 100 feet of water in some spots

there are lots of variables. which drive you like(old town, native, jackson, hobie.) what type of kayak you like. super stable floating dock, lightweight and fast, in between. all have pros and cons. deck layouts are different. you name it. with that said, there is really no reason to get a big barge unless you a)are a big guy, b)plan to load it down with hundreds of pounds of geat, or c) stand up and fish 75% of the time. personally, I like the design of the native drive the best since it's direct gear drive(less slop or stretchy belt feel), second only to hobie in terms of top speed, and just robust/simple. the slayer propel max 12.5 is the one that blends speed with stability, where the titan line is a big barge, and the manta ray propel 12(liquidlogic branded) is one of the few "throw n go" style rec/fishing kayaks. that manta ray is very efficient/fast, but i'ts more of a minimalist fishing kayak in terms of layout, though it does have in hull storage that you can access on land. all pedal drive kayaks aside from that liquidlogic manta are going to be 100+lbs when rigged, keep that in mind if it matters. a lot of people underestimate weight and then throw their back out trying to load/unload them anywhere but pristine banks and boat ramps. hull design is also extremely important when it comes to how they handle in chop and current.

the longer the better when it comes to bigger water. the length helps with tracking, maintaining speed, and rolling with the chop. with that said, some wider kayaks actually perform worse in big swells because they don't "roll" with the waves as much, and kind of just get pushed around. at the end of the day you will never be able to test them all unfortunately. a lot of people do prefer the hobie drive system just because of the mechanical motion being pushes instead of actual pedal revolutions, someone who is used to riding a bike might be the opposite though. that doesn't really matter unless you're doing lots of miles though.hell, I do more miles than most people in a paddle kayak. I probably average several miles once a week over the span of 3-4 hours. some fishing thrown in there. the good thing about a kayak is just exploring also. places you could never otherwise get to easily, even banks on the far side of lakes and such. find lots of lures too..

Pretty much. It will catch fish better the closer you get it to cover, but it will also be more likely to snag the closer you fish it to cover. Vary depth by varying speed, sweep an area with casts and then move, don’t just stand in one spot making the same cast over and over again (unless you’re pounding a school of fish).

throw it out, give it a jerk(some spinners need a pump or the blade won't start spinning half of the time) then just retrieve. slower and it runs deeper, faster and it runs higher in the water column. they are good search baits, just cast them out at different angles from the bank to cover a wide area in search of fish. just about any fish will hit them if they're big enough.

Replying to myself and for anyone else interested. After watching several reviews on the Smitty's, it looks like they send you recognizable name brand material if nothing else. Anyway, he brought me some, and tell you what, ask your doctor next time if you can score some, miles better quality then the ones from the tackle shop.

if you're going to use the baitcaster in saltwater, might as well just spend a little more and get something made for that like a shimano tranx since it has some sealing and is built pretty beefy. the daiwa tatulas are amazing reels, but that one is more of a standard freshwater reel with premium feel. as for that rod, the reason it doesn't list power is because it's a glass blend crankbait style rod. hence the "reaction" label. personally, I like those kinds of rods, they bend further down the blank and are a bit less "snappy" in terms of the response time to forces. very good for treble hook lures. tldr: that setup is a great bass fishing setup, but not really something I would use for saltwater

Seasoning your grate is actually something i was going to suggest. Also use your spatula to fully dislodge the skin before you try to flip. Might also be worth trying injection marinating instead of slicing the skin, that cant be making it any easier to keep the skin in tact.

Browns aren't native so look for water feeding lakes stocked with them. Most if not all of the lakes will probably have rainbows and browns. They may also be stocked with lake bound salmon as well as bass, crappie and bluegill.

i_fish is right about plenty of things, but he's also a narcissist. plus he's biased with the types of actions he likes as anyone else who has been fishing a long time would be. his suggestions definitely aren't for everyone. he's gonna be super jaded now since he's getting $500+ jdm rods regularly.

8 lb is too heavy for trout. Go with 4 lb. The swivels won't work. You need smaller swivels that are not rated as high, otherwise you will get a fuckton of line twist. I also recommend using a snap. An Ugly Stik is ok, but it's no longer good for the price, and it is especially weak for trout fishing, since trout can be subtle in their eats. I really like the Panther Martin. I would get a yellow and silver 2, a black and gold 2, and both those colors in 4s.
You can get by with the Ugly Stik. If you can swap the line for something lighter, I definitely would. You really need to get lighter swivels, and if you decide not to, I would recommend you fish without a swivel. Since it'll be useless, no sense in dealing with the hassle.

The Panther Martin recommendations are good, but you can pretty much ignore the rest of that guys post. I've caught plenty of trout on 12lb mono, 8 will work just fine.

I have never caught a single fish on a panther martin, but every time I throw out a rooster tail I catch a fish. Why is that? Are panther martins just shit?

just depends on the water conditions and the species, if they are actively feeding or sluggish, etc.
the bit of feather or whatever on the back of those lures gets clumped up when wet and undulates in a way that mimics small bait really well

Panther Martins are tried and true, don't know why you're having issues.
I do think they're kind of overpriced. Gotta pay them Italian factory workers their obligatory pack of cigarettes and glass of wine a day. I joke, they're made in chink land these days.
I just buy those knock off rooster tails for less than a buck at wally world and they work just fine.

Shill me this rod. I’m looking for a new cheap rod that I can take creek fishing, primarily for ned rigs.

Somebody sell me on walleye fishing from the bank. It's popular here I guess, but I think they lose a dozen jigs in the rocks just to catch one fish so what's the point?

the likelihood that any rod is going to fail you on some light weight situations is pretty low. just find a reputable brand and buy one of their products if it fits your budget.

you want sensitivity for ned rigs. the aird-x with braid to leader or straight yo-zuri hybrid will be pretty sensitive for the price. the 6'6 being slightly more crisp than the 7'. get medium or medium heavy depending on hook wire size. the other option is to always find a higher tier rod on sale.

I'm the biggest graphex stan you will ever find. It's been my primary rod for 6 years now. It's a super light, very fast very sensitive rod for 35 maple Bux, until recently it was just 30. I like the chrome guides in place of inserts because they don't crack they just bend. I've been on vacation in Florida just casting at Lady fish for 2 weeks straight sitting on the beach with a toddler, dragging salty sandy braid over the guides, never had an issue with grooving. I'm on my 3rd one, first one I broke when it was lying on its side and I was making a cast with my heavy casting rod and the leader wrapped around the tip, second rod lasted about 3 years and I just broke it recently high sticking a 6lb pike while I wasn't paying attention and my novice friend was being retarded with the net. 6 years and I'm just now cresting over 100$ in rods.

It feels way better than the Shimano stimula which is almost 50% more expensive, and my stimula broke almost immediately after buying it under very basic conditions.

It's not as tough as fiberglass rods, but it also feels as good as the expensive rods, which are no more durable. I'd rather have the sensitivity with the understanding that carbon is more brittle and only be out 35$ every few years.

I throw bass frogs and big pike spoons with 20lb braid, as well as lightweight bait rigs with 6lb mono. I keep buying other rods and I keep coming back to this one. I'm convinced it's basically the only freshwater spinning rod I'm going to buy so long as it's available

Probably gonna go buy my first real rod and reel (that isn't a cheap one from Canadian tire) tomorrow. Any suggestions? My budget is $200 canadian ($150 USD). Needs to be a 2 piece.
I exclusively do shore fishing since I have no boat, and I mostly target pike and walleye (though I've had no luck with walleye this year so far), and I also do trout fishing though I plan to eventually get an ultralight for that. I'm thinking either 6'6" or 7'0" for length (longer will probably be too awkward to cast for tight spots), medium weight. Would fast action be a good idea, or should I just go with medium for that too?
Also, I want durability, especially in regards to the reel (if I have to set the rod down I don't want to worry about sand fucking up the reel), but sensitivity is probably just as if not more important because I'm still fairly new to this hobby and have trouble telling when I'm getting a light bite (let alone distinguishing a bite from my lure catching the top of weeds). Guessing I should go with graphite over fiberglass?

Oh yeah also, what sort of line do you guys recommend? I think I've been using 7lb clear mono (it came with the Canadian Tire rod). I'm thinking of going up to 10lb. Is there any particular colour I should get, or just go with clear? Also, mono or fluoro (not going to use braid)?

Your budget is fine, but it doesn't sound like you know what you want so maybe don't blow that cash yet if that's not the kind of money you want to spend carelessly.

Unironically, I'd spend 50$ on an AliExpress or temu or whatever reel, all the north american brands in your budget are all just rebadged OEM reels from these same factories so you're missing out on nothing except paying some overweight diabetic sales managers salary. I like the kastking Sharkey but there are literally countless good options >>2829404
I gave up on that, the break always ends up being on the last 1/3rd of the cast and the feeling of the knot passing through the guides always makes me queasy.

The Coffee Pot is a good place with public access just a few miles up the road from Last Chance. Henery's Fork is a fly fishing Mecca so the fish are heavily pressured and will be picky. Henry's Fork Anglers has good breakfast burritos and there are plenty of cheap places to stay.

first off, never sit your reel down in/near sand. it's that simple. I always lay down a tackle box or something and then sit my reel on that if I'm in a sandy area. or prop it up against a tree. second, as you mentioned for trout, it's better jsut to have an ultralight/light rod for that. you're not gonna find a durable pike style setup that is good for casting light stuff for trout and being able to fight them without being too stiff. what kind of lures do you mainly throw for pike? seeing as you sound like you want a fairly versatile rod, I'd suggest a bladed jig style rod. they aren't usually glass rods, but have more of a moderate action so it's like bridging the gap between a glass and normal rod. you usually still have decent sensitivity. are you planning to get a baitcaster since it's for pike? at the end of the day, the best way to get bang for buck is to buy rods and reels when online retailers have them on sale or have big seasonal sales. you can get higher tier gear for much cheaper than msrp. that's how I bought most of my stuff. I have some stuff that I NEVER would have bought at msrp. granted it involves being less picky, more patient, but it really pays off. I've bought $250 reels for $150, and $200 rods for $100.
