What's your go to field watch?
Do you even wear a watch? Maybe you think it's stupid.

This cheap chinese watch by tandorio with a dial in the style of a type B flieger watch.
Japanese NH35A automatic movement so it self-winds, waterproof, I paid 44.66โ‚ฌ for it.
For 15โ‚ฌ more you can get a titanium case, but titanium scratches easier than stainless, which some people like but I prefer stainless.
I used to carry a quartz watch with chronograph but realized I don't actually ever use the chronograph part.

I've been curious about smart watches, can you load GPX files on them?
It's not dreadfully often I need anything more than a map and compass, but it seems convenient. How often do you need to charge it?

Pretty much any Casio, big fan of the W86 myself, similar to the immortal F-91 but better water resistance and a way better and very cool EL backlight.
Took mine diving to 30M without issue and only now after 10 years is the battery beginning to fail.

If looking for a smart watch, the Garmin Instinct series is highly regarded.
I don't use any notifications or smart phone shit on mine except for tracking hikes/runs/cycles.
It's like a supercharged G-Shock, tough as nails so far, simple display, reasonable battery, Pulse Oximetry, solid GPS, altimeter, barometer, compass, tons of customisation, you can even write your own apps.

>>2826576
I've got the instinct 2 and I believe you can, but it'll only be a basic breadcrumb, point to point trail, the fancier Fenix and such have colour screens and can have "real" maps.
I'll get at least 10 days on mine, tracking 90 minutes - 2 hours of running a week, plus loads of wee bits and pieces.

Garmin Enduro 2, it's my favorite piece of kit for going /out/

I've worn mine in the most austere environments, through deep jungles, rappelling, surfing, snorkeling, free diving, hiking, long rucks, etc. the GPS stays accurate in the boonies, it's tough, I've fallen into gulches and haven't lost it. ~32 day bat life with all sensors, extend to 80+ days through tweaking the settings, charges in maybe an hour. My favorite thing is the variety of preset activities, and the ability to create custom activities.
The default map kinda sucks and shows Lat/Long coordinates, but I downloaded an MGRS app on the side.
I don't have any experience with the topo+ subscription, but I know you can expand upon the maps by hooking to up to a PC.
I was a retard and decided to wear a velco band to the beach and lost it to a wave right before a half marathon.
Bought it again, only use the silicone band, it hasn't failed me yet. Don't buy any chink bands off Amazon either, they'll fail right away, stick with the out of the box band.

I like my Vostok.
If I manage to break the Ivan-proofed watch, it's just 60 or 70 bucks to replace it. Rotating bezel can be used as a compass as long as you have sunlight. It's been nice and accurate since I regulated it. It took a lot of shaking when riding my bike on some pavement but it's still ticking along. Only problem is that the lume is not great. Oh well.
I never wear my Alpinist /out/, it just doesn't feel right and I don't know why.

I like my Seiko Spring Drive Tuna (SBDB013).
It's ridiculous how cheap you can get a Spring Drive movement, and it's light and comfortable for its size.
The only thing about it I'm not entirely pleased with is the bracelet, which gnaws a little on my wrist and smells pretty bad after a few days of sweating and bits of dead skin accumulating in it.
Still not a big enough deal for me to replace it, but if I did I'd spring for an Isofrane or Tropic watch band, which I've used on my other watches, but then again also maybe not: I understand it uses fat spring bars, which can be tough to tread through the holes in rubber bands.
If not the Tuna, I imagine I'd have wanted a Seiko Turtle or Doxa Sub 300T, for the sweet cushion case.

It's all relative, brah. I've had cheaper cars than that and I have a more expensive hedgerow than that, but I very much wanted a watch with a Spring Drive movement, and it's between 1/3 to 1/5 the price of other models with that. Besides, the price has gone up after it went out of production.
If you would like a Tuna for yourself, I suggest you sit down and read up on the different models and see if you find one you like. Even the quartz models have rock solid movements.

F-105W. The case is shiny from years of wear, and the plastic glass is scratched (it can be polished, but it's not too bad at the moment). It's small, very light and cheap. The display readability is slightly worse than the F91W because of the electroluminescence layer.

The only thing I don't like is the poor water resistance. I sprayed the inside of this with an electronic corrosion inhibitor because my F91W stopped working a day after being soaked in the rain.

Timex Expedition. I wish I still had my first one from the mid 90s, but oh well. The fabric strap on my current one is wearing out, and I'm toying with making a new one instead of buying - I'm a leather worker already but I've never done anything as small as a watch strap, so it should be a fun experiment. I'll post results here if it works out but I have to finish a wallet for one of my coworkers first.

Consider use first, aesthetics second, then find something that intersects at a price point you're comfortable with. If you don't find anything in your budget, figure out what you're willing to compromise on.
For an active (sports, /out/, military, rough work) application, I wouldn't worry about the size as much as the features you need/want. You have people with wrists so thin they look like they've been thrown out of Gaza for hunger striking, and they wear ginormous ill-fitting wrist computers like it's the most natural thing in the world. You're definitely not going to be the dumbest looking wristlet at the party just because a DW-5600 or something like it is a little big on you.
