GISfags, how's the career looking?
I'm getting this coursera cert because I can't afford schooling again.
But I'm jumping ship from 15 years of being a network technician.
I wanna go out, sweat my ass off in the woods, collect data, come back and plot it on a map and make other maps.
How much work do I gotta put in to achieve this life?

Interesting. What are job prospects like for this. Just graduated with a toilet paper ass CS degree, have been thinking of postgrad stuff for branching out to other areas.

You don't need to enroll in a course for this. Just shell out 100$ to ESRI for ArcGIS and do their included beginner courses. Then you can take their certification exam and that's good enough to get an entry position.
FYI it sucks and the pay isn't great; it's mostly a skill you add to your resume on top of other stuff you do for a career, like forestry or archaeology.

says, it's largely a tool and not a job role.
You collect data and make maps and be able to draw relations between data points.
It is applicable to any industry that likes maps.
But it's just a skill of pressing the right buttons on a screen to display the information you want. It's just another data monkey job unless you know more stuff.

I had a friend who worked in GIS for the state mostly for parks. From what they said it seemed really easy but the pay was dogshit and there was not much room for promotion.

Entry level GIS is just data entry, and senior level GIS is just dev/IT work. Do land surveying instead if you're looking for something more /out/.

GIS has been good to me, lads, but this will be my last contract coming up. It was fun being on the road and staying in hotels and the money was decent at $1900 a week after tax but I am going to find something more regular where I just commute from my home.
