Looking into how much money it costs to go out and hike or climb mountains is just ridiculous. It makes the achievement of say climbing Everest seem less impressive when you realize it costs literally $150,000-250,000 just to be ready and get there. The fact that many countries tax your currency, so you'll be spending even more money to co-exist for a short period of time. It's just all bullshit.

Bruh, you might as well say "the cost to drive a car is ridiculous, it's literally $18 million to buy a Bugatti and then you need to spend more on petrol".

The Matterhorn and Ama Dablam are both spectacular climbs and can be done for well under $10k. Island Peak is 6,165m and you can do it for $1400. Go lower and there are mountains you can climb for nothing but the cost of gear and food.
Anonymous No.2828359
Try climbing mountains in your own state/country to begin with. Do you have any summits under your belt? If not, go bag some

Why do you care? You aren't going to climb it.

I think this should be called the sword in the stone fallacy

Who cares if you can't make it there, you wouldn't have been able to pull the sword from the stone anyway

You're paying someone to baby sit you for 1-2 months to ensure you don't die while also risking their own life along the way. Also Napel requires guide services at this point iirc to avoid reckless people from shitting it up due to how dangerous the entire range is over there.

Beyond that the only other peaks you're going to be paying big money to climb is like Denali, or obscure peaks in 3rd world countries that are super remote and require guides.

Shit like Alps, Cascades, Whitney, Rockeys, entire AT can be done at basically the cost of travel + gear + permits (if required)

Be realistic. He isn't going to attempt to climb Everest. He won't even attempt anything remotely difficult like that; most people won't. It would accurately reflect your analogy if most people were too incompetent, soft, and lazy to travel to the stone.

but it's everyone's right to try to pull the sword from the stone, creating such a cost around traveling to the stone and attempting to pull the sword is just obnoxious

Go do Kilimanjaro. I paid $2k about fifteen years ago. That included all the government fees, guides, porters, food and treated water (which I treated again myself), a tent, etc. plus a night at a hotel in town the day before and after the hike. That was ten days in total.

OP hasn't climbed a single 10k+ peak and you're telling him to go climb kilimanjaro as his first.

Getting to base camp is not the same as climbing Everest. $275 is cheap as fuck and likely he convinced people to help him for the video. Most people pay $1000-2000 just to get to base camp.

just checked, if I flew out with nothing but my carryon the longest they're booking flights out it would be ~900 for the trip, if I drove to NYC and flew from there it would be 600, both of these only put you within 80 miles of the base camp though
Anonymous No.2828532
>>2828527
Yeah, I mean unless you're extremely rich and can afford a heli ride to base camp you have to trek it which takes 10-14 days (one way). There's like 2 or 3 permits you have to pay for which is like $60 or so. Nepal put a law in place that also requires you to have a guide now a year or so ago and most of them charge $20-25/day. The guy in >>2828506 got very lucky with the price of his Sherpa. Highly suspect he haggled him down for the video or got very lucky.

Most people actually trying to do Everest also require porters for gear and food to bring with them which is another cost, and yeah this also ignores getting to Nepal as well. Not everyone lives in India lmao and can just drive up into it.

Cap. Your flight alone would be in the thousands of dollars.

bro i literally just went to google and went 'nyc to nepal everest base camp' clicked fly there went to like late august (the furthest google would allow me to schedule, could probably schedule further on a website) and then set it to one way from NYC and it spit out like 600 dollars for the flight before tip from some arab or indian airlines, attempting to fly from some other city would probably have way more and ofc this doesn't count any other costs

10k is about where AMS becomes a serious issue which will make or break a summit attempt. Telling someone to go do a 19k peak as their first summit is basically suicidal, especially if you grew up near sea level.
Anonymous No.2828605 >>2828606
>>2828564
AMS is rarely serious before 3.5km
Kilimanjaro is very commonly climbed by people with no prior experience.
My first peak was 6.2km, calling sub6k basically suicidal is ridiculous hyperbole.

Not larping. Did Island Peak (6,165m) and Mera Peak (6,476m) in Nepal back when I was 21. They're both well known as easy beginner's peaks that are suitable for someone with no prior mountaineering experience. Mera is essentially a walk, handling the altitude is essentially the only difficulty but assuming you've acclimatised properly you'll probably be fine. Island Peak has a short semi-technical section but it's simple enough that you don't need any prior skills, the guides are able to teach what you need to know at base camp.
