First for best telescopic rod is the one you exchanged for a 3pc.
Talk about fishin
>>2829416>FG knotHad to look that up. I'm pretty sure it'll slip with braid to braid.
>>2829422The only braid I use is 10lb and I've never had an fg slip it's a really solid knot it's just annoying to tie when your out fishing.
>>2829428I have only used the fg knot for mono to braid, ive never seen anyone use it for splicing braid to braid
>>2829429Just stating my experience. There are a million knots you can try, I've had good luck with FG in the application he presented. But things really depend on what environment you're fishing in and what you're fishing for.
>>2829397don't sit your reel down in sand/dirt. prop it against a tree or lay it on something. sediment is the worst thing for a reel. especially if you don't take it apart and deep clean/maintain it regularly. I'm assuming you want a spinning reel? you can probably find the Penn Battle 3 on sale for well under $90 since the 4 has been out a while now. all aluminum and sealed bearings. look for 2500 size. shimano nasci is another choice right at the $100 mark since they just came out with a new 2025 version, you might find old stock for cheaper. will be much smoother than the penn but it's not all aluminum. not that it will be fragile. then just get the two piece daiwa aird-x or something. model AIRX662MFS or AIRX702MFS. I haven't used enough 2 piece rods to recommend any others, and you're limited anyways. try some 8lb yo-zuri hybrid line for added sensitivity due to low stretch. it's more like 10lb strength anyways. if you went the baitcaster route, you could get more bang for your buck but there is a learning curve.
>>2829418 (OP)never forget the amazing videos and all the good times gone toosoon
I'm about to go muskie fishing for the first time
>>2829467Good luck anon, mind the teeth in the mouth and be careful of the teeth in the gill plate
The hospital in my town did some shit with their lawn recently and I don't know if they thought it through, because now every time they run the sprinklers it floods their lawn.
Do I put bluegill in there for shits and giggles? There's no cameras near that end of the lot and I think it'd be the funniest shit in the world to stock their accidental pond.
>>2829404You could, but I wouldn't. If you're fairly close to the backing, just get new line. The line probably won't break or be bad for casting, but even though I am a cheapskate, I wouldn't do that.
>>2829397I think you're very well-informed. I would get a 6'6" M/F rod with 8 lb line if I was only targeting walleye. If I was trying to get the job done for both pike and walleye, *I* would stay with 8 lb, especially since I'm not throwing monster baits on that Medium rod. But someone else might go to 12 lb. Just don't exceed what your rod is rated for by much.
>Is there any particular colour I should get, or just go with clear? Also, mono or fluoro (not going to use braid)? What's your problem with braid? Braid is great. Definitely do not use fluoro on a spinning reel. It is kink and tangle in no time. That means you're using mono, which is no problem. I'd just get clear. Lo-vis green is also good but especially good for trout.
>>2829407>I like the kastking Sharkey but there are literally countless good optionsThe Sharkey is a great reel for catfish, but it would be fucking terrible for walleye. It's big and bulky, not the thing you want to cast all day.
>>2829412I would get a 4 WT Echo Lift Kit. I think the similar kit that Redington has is also fine. The fly line in there is dog shit. After a few months of fly fishing enjoyment, find a fly line for $50+.
Glass cranking rod, is it a good investment? I haven't thrown many crankbaits because I couldn't throw them on the rods I got to start with. Then, I got into fly fishing. Now, I'm back to conventional fishing and am wondering what is the way to go here.
>>2829513depends on the lures you throw, not even just limited to crankbaits. glass rods are great for hardbaits in general with treble hooks that are on the smaller side. if you're using large hardbaits with big trebles, you don't "need" a cranking rod because the barbs are big enough to hold even with a stiffer or faster action rod. if using a glass rod for hardbaits that require twitches like jerkbaits and topwaters, you can just go up a power so that it's not as floppy. it will still work well for crankbaits as intended. I like glass composite rods in general so I have lots of them. they really do keep the fish hooked up even on the tiniest hooks because of the shock absorbtion.
>>2829509NTA.. I have a 4wt echo lift and a 6wt echo traverse. I personally prefer the traverse. It's about $50 more(250 vs 200ish). But it's a medium fast vs medium(almost into the light) and I like the action much better. The 4wt lift is great for small streams and creeks with dry flies. But it's not great for casting heavy nymphs, at least not at my experience level(beginner 1.5years in). When I'm fishing larger bodies of water like the lower Sacramento, I use the 6wt traverse almost exclusively. I can cast farther, more accurately and can cast drys, hopper droppers nymph rigs and streamers. Just my 2 cents..
caught the fish in charge of the dinkerton agency
>>2829445>>2829508I ended up getting the (new version of the) Ugly Stik GX2. 7'0", medium-medium, glass. I actually did end up going with braid based on the store owner's suggestion (it's a local tackle shop. A bit pricey, but it's the only dedicated tackle shop within like 200 kilometers so I'm happy to support it). I got 20lb dark green braid. All in all I paid $100 for it, not including the line and the other stuff I bought while I was there.
Now I have to decide whether to try it out tomorrow or wait until after work on Friday. It costs like $30 in gas to get to any fishing spots because they're all a 30 minute drive away and I have a gas guzzling old pickup truck, but there is a spot just outside the town I work in.
>>2829560You did fine. People shit on the ugly stick but they're perfectly serviceable rods, I don't know what the reel they come with is like, but I'm sure it's also fine. Once you get used to closing the bail by hand to avoid wind knots you will love braid. Learn to fg knot to mono leaders and you're all set. Good luck!
>>2829560I caught this fat bitch on my GX2. I even hooked a huge gator on it. It's a classic rod.
Now I rarely touch the thing but man it gets the job done.
Though when I first got the rod I broke the reel it came with in like a week. Put a Pflueger Trion on it and it's been a fine reel.
>>2829565Oh, I already close the bail by hand every time actually. I was having trouble with wind knots even on mono. I also use my finger to put tension on the line when reeling in the slack after a cast so that it wraps around the reel properly (is there a better way of doing it?). I'm not sure exactly what the reel is but it feels nice and smooth. I can always get a better reel later on (and probably will eventually). For leaders I usually use metal ones, since there are a lot of pike around here and their teeth are sharp as hell.
>>2829566Sounds like I don't have to worry about the rod breaking then if you can hook a fucking alligator and not have it snap on you, nice. There's nothing that big here unless I happen to get like a master angler pike.
>>2829562I literally sell fishing gear for a living. I don't know what you are going on about.
>>2829603>>2829451Isn't self-promotion a bannable offense? How has this guy gotten away with it for ages? Just buy an ad.
>>2829611Since when is shit-posting a bannable offense brah?
Communist!
Lads. I posted a month ago about how my leader cut into my fly line when it got tangled on a cast. I'm partnered with said company, so I won't name and shame them. The good news is that they replaced my line. My fly rod from them is a bit of a different story. They're still working on that one.
Relatively speaking, it's cold as fuck today, which means it's comfortable fishing weather. I'm getting out today.
I've come to the realization that waders are tick and spider proof, so I've been throwing them on just to push through the tall grasses nobody else wants to walk through and it's been leading to some great fishing spots that haven't been touched since winter.
Honestly, cheap waders was the best thing I've ever purchased for fishing. You guys have any items you bought that changed the way you fish?
>>2829680Treat your /out/ clothes with permethrin and you'll be tick AND mosquito proof while trekking to those hard to get to places and you won't boil alive in a set of waders.
>>2829693>you won't boil alive in a set of waders.Spoilers, I strip before I put them on. It's actually not that bad until it's over 90 degrees and I have pretty shit heat tolerance.
>>2829697It's been over 90 by 10am here in Norcal for a couple months now. Long hot summers here in the valley. Cooler up in the mountains, but not by much. Just thinking about wearing waders right now makes me sweat...lol
can someone tell me if i can strip the outer layer of this braided line without one of those tools? i tried it with some scissors and i can strip a small part before i just cut the whole line
>>2829720guess i will have to buy one of these?
Is fishing from shore ever any good, or do you basically need a kayak/canoe or whatever to go out? I've been fishing from shore for the last couple of days and have caught fuck all but weeds
>>2829722depends what kind of fish you wanna get, i only fished from the shore until now
>>2829722You're casting to the wrong places from the bank. And yes bank fishing can be great, I have caught every salmon I've ever caught from the bank.
>>2829671Hope you get it back, anon. There are two popular companies that are terrible about getting a rod back in time. Sometimes up to a year.
>>2829680I use swimtrunks during the spring and summer. Love doing it. I have some shitty creekshoes that have zero support and you can feel every single rock. Just ordered some wading boots and looking at some gravel guard socks for the summer and wading pants for the fall and winter. I'm afraid if I got full waders I'd get cocky and end up stepping in the wrong hole.
>>2829722depends on the bodies of water, but summer fishing is harder in large lakes since most fish go deep. colest part of winter and warmest part of summer is where lots of fish go deep.
>>2829724>You're casting to the wrong places from the bankWhat the fuck does this even mean? What are the "right" places?
>>2829741>What are the "right" places? The places where the fish are.
I'm taking two girls out on a boat to fish a lake this weekend. I've never been boat fishing and I've never been on this lake. How do I ensure that we catch something so I don't look like a fucking loser for 4 hours?
>>2829702>norcalIts either hot as balls or pissing rain
>>2829765Live bait.
Also women on a boat live on a timer counting down to when they have to piss, so picking a lake that has a public park with a dock near a public toilet is always a good choice.
>>2829765Focus around any feature on the lake that's not open water: docks/structures, lilly pads/any plants, snags, points that jut out into the water, etc.
>>2829768I was planning on bringing minnow and redworms but I also have a pretty stocked tackle box of soft plastics as well just in case
>>2829418 (OP)Went to trying some Fishing Florida Water and found a swamp puppy. Tried to get a closer look at the sheila and she went under to hide from me.
>>2829765Instead of "women" think of them as toddlers. Even if you knew there was an unmissable hot bite on trophy fish, I would say focus on being in cool places, and bring lots of entertainment, snacks, and beverages. If they're sluts bring weed and twisted teas and swimming toys. They will probably only want to fish for about 25 minutes then you'd better have something else or they'll get bored and obnoxious.
>>2829775>want to fish for about 25 minutesIf that. It takes a very rare breed of woman to last more than 10 minutes with a rod that isn't a cock in their hand. They're just there to fuck around on a boat.
anyone got favorite soft plastic craws? was using the googan bandito bugs today and while bass were hitting them quickly, they also had a survival rate of 0%. any time i brought them back with or without a fish they no longer had their claws. just shredded.
>>2829780I tried the rattle craws by the same brand, they were completely shredded after two to three small bass, seems to be kind of the thing with their plastic.
>>2829781guess that's the nature of it. i had some 1 dollar pack of wal mart brand ones which got eviscerated just as easily.
>>2829775>They will probably only want to fish for about 25 minutesIt's a 4 hour rental.....
>>2829784are you trying to fish or fuck the girls? get your priorities straight here.
>>2829680I don't care about ticks and spiders. You're going to puncture your waders by going through thick brush. Wear jeans or chaps instead. They work better than waders.
>>2829720There's no reason to unbraid your braid. That's going to reduce its strength dramatically. If you want to fish a single strand, a filament, if you will, use monofilament.
>>2829784Yeah so bring swim toys, wear swim trunks, bring a cooler of drinks and have 4 hours of fun that include 20 Minutes of fishing you dork.
>>2829720This has

>>2829789I wore jeans and after fifteen minutes ants had made their way into my shoes. Fuck that.
>>2829779Idk, if you have a radio and comfortable chairs and a cooler full of good drinks, my experience is that even vapid zoomer whores will fish until they get too drunk to hold the rod. It helps if youโre catching though, and standing behind them to โhelpโ them fight a decent fish is always a winning move.
>>2829775This. Never do anything outdoorsy with a woman, ever. They don't have the attention span for it, they get super pissy and snarky when things don't go their way, and they can never keep up on hikes/kayaks/anything even remotely physical. Their idea of "going outdoors" is drinking mixed drinks on a patio
First attempt. Bullhead. Will it kill me?
Crazy how much easier tying size 12 stimulators are compared to size 14! It's like I have miles of extra space :p
>>2829811Could also be that I have a better understanding of the whole process. I probably should have started with the larger hooks and done the smaller ones second. Something to keep in mind for next time :)
>>2829808good job filleting
>>2829808The killing you part will come down to cooking.
>>2829811>>2829822Larger hooks can be easier to tie on. Even if you dont fish a lot of midges, tie a bunch of #22 midge patterns and when you go back to your #14 stimulators youll feel like everything is neanderthal easy.
>>2829733>gravel guard socksThe gravel guard feature is useless imo. When rolled down, it's way easier to get gravel and sand in the sock. Just buy cheap diving socks.
>>2829801Last week, I was watching an Australian woman with a bass boat demonstrate how to take a piss. She was by herself and seemed a lot more informed than most people, as if she does a lot of fishing.
>>2829868>The gravel guard feature is useless imoI've heard mixed things. Thought I'd at least try them. Would gaiters be a better alternative? I really hate getting gravel and sand in my shoes/boots. Pain in the ass to get out.
Can't decide. I have neither a glass cranking rod (no cranking rods at all) nor a frog rod. I can only buy one, which should I buy first?
I think I would get a Mojo Bass Glass in 7'2" if I was going with the cranking rod, but I'm not sure what I should get other than a heavy fast for the frog rod. What's an ideal length?
>>2829878cranking rod is way more useful. topwater treble baits, jerkbaits, you name it. frogging rods are just stiff sticks. you don't really have to get anything specific for that so long as it's stiff. I rarely use frogs these days personally.
>>2829789>There's no reason to unbraid your braid.you don't understand, it's not normal braid, it coated braid, for example, i can hardly make a knot with it, for a normal carp rig
>>2829878Get somethihg medium heavy and fast glass- a decent reel and 40lb braid will get you a suitable frog stick that is just as at home with a crankbait, jerk bait, spinner bait, or smaller swim bait. I unironucally frog on a 6'6" 2 piece ugly stik gx2
Have y'all taken the 1/95 oz pill yet?
>>2829928Tasted good enough
>>2829928>>2829929looks good, hope it was worth the work
>>2829893NTA... That looks like something you should be using nail or other such knot to attach a leader to.
>>2829893As that anon suggested, a nail knot is a good idea. My question now is why did you buy that braid? What is it good for?
>>2829993it's for carp rigs, so the line is on this braid line but i was dumb and didn't know that i bought a coated one, so i need to strip the outer layer to get to the good stuff, something like pic related
>>2829997https://youtu.be/A9xjhXsmpQ4?si=z84ESk47uQYiNkBO
I was curious about it, so I searched the line you posted above on YouTube and came up with a few videos of what you're talking about. In this video(different brand similar line), he just uses a coin(50p) and a hard surface to strip the coating from the part he needs to. But I also watched a video where they used an item like the one you also posted, just after the post with the braid in question. Seems like it's a very UK carp fishing specific product.
>>2830000not really UK specific since as a euro i'd says it's just generally a carp fishing specific thing here as i've seen those tools before that strip the outer line but i never had one personally, maybe i'll try the coin trick as in the video meanwhile
I got skunked because the Philly Cheesesteak from last night only let me fish for 15 minutes.
>>2830014Nothing worse than getting all setup and then having to flee to the nearest stop and rob to demolish the bathroom because some leprechaun curse replaced your insides with a basket of angry snakes.

I have this old spool of Berkeley brand mono line, Iโd like to know the test strength, but the label is torn. I can see itโs .28mm
Anyone know the test strength?
>>28300208-10lb I'm guessing
>>2830020that's usually 10lb
>>2830022>>2830024Prolly right. Thanks!
Should I add line to the spool?
>>2830030isn't the fullest but doesn't look detrimental.
>bottom fishing for catfish
>every bite was bass
They ate all my worms before I got one catfish.
>>2830051good problem to have, nice looking bass.
>>2830062I wanted catfish though. That one was the largest at like 3.5 to 4lbs, rest were between 2 and 3lbs.
fuck im dumb posted in the old thread
got this fella today with a friend, we were using a feeder + boillies rigs
>>2830067Fuck those were good smallies then
>>2830070Mirrir carp are so cool
>>2830002Sure, could be a general euro thing too. I said UK because I watched 6 videos(5 different channels) and they were all from the UK. So my sample size was small, but very consistent. Come to think of it, I don't really see many EU fishing videos that aren't UK. But that's where my bias came from.
>>2830067Why do you want catfish? They're ugly and taste like poopie doopie
>>2830070I'm jealous, those are neat fish.
>>2830081>Fuck those were good smallies thenYeah they were good fights all of them.
>>2830085They're cool. I'm checking off all the local species and I only have 5 kinds of catfish/bullheads left and a couple types of salmon unless you count fish that don't grow bigger than a few inches.
>>2830067at least ya got some fish. i caught a sub one pounder bass earlier and that's it.
>>2830087I guess a fish is a fish. I just feel bad for the bass. Here have smiling fish to cheer you up.
>>2830093What'd you do with the bass?
>>2830097Straight back in the water. I catch and release unless somebody nearby asks if they can have it for food.
How do you guys rig minnow when seeking bass?
uk bonger here anyone have any beginner guides to fishing and how to fish i am retarded
My buddy hooked what must have been a monster today, however he couldn't reel it in. Even when we tightened the drag knob all the way, the reel just spun in place while the line didn't move, and then the line broke (or the fish bit it off, since it was likely a pike). Does anyone know what might have been happening there?
>>2830131was it a baitcasting reel? maybe the line was slipping on the spool.
>>2830140When the water got low I cleared out a downed tree that's in the middle of a drainage area, shit tons of crankbaits and heavy jigs, and three entire fishing rods were stuck in it.
>>2829875>Would gaiters be a better alternative?I would say so, but I haven't tried them. I've given up on reducing sand and gravel getting in my boots for the time being. It's the cost of doing business. All I know is that when using gravel guard wading socks, the sand and gravel gets into the sock instead of the boot, which is way harder to get out.
The best thing you can do is find wading boots that aren't loose. I've wanted to try the Simms Zip-it Flats shoe, but I've seen a couple negative reviews, and I am dubious of their performance in non-salt environments, i.e. places with gravel, steep banks, and lots of walking.
You could also take the approach of total acceptance, that sand and gravel is an inevitable and perpetual irritant. For this, use Crocs or sandals. Obviously, you won't be scaling banks or boulders very well.
>>2829733Gravel guard socks looks like they'd end up catching the gravel and sand themselves, as the other anon pointed out. Maybe something like picrel will work?
>>2830148Spinning reel. It's a cheap one from Canadian Tire.
>>2830140It's certainly possible, though the line seemed to be moving around in the water a bit.
>>2830156Nta. Regardless, you should always use mono backing for braid. For baitcasters, use a minimal amount, just enough so that you can't see the spool anymore or close to not seeing it.
>>2830168It had mono on it.
why is carp fishing easier with boilies and not with corn? i swear i have no luck with corn most of the time
>>2830190I can't relate. If I use corn for carp I'll get a bite every couple minutes but I've never gotten one to bite on any other bait ever
>>2830191>I'll get a bite every couple minutesi maybe get 1 bite per session on corn, fuck me could be lake related
>>2830156>asks why he couldn't reel it in and why the line broke>Canadian TireLmao every single time
for my carp fishers out there, after how much time should i recast when fishing with a method feeder?
Finally got one of those bullheads I've been going for, real monster.
>>2830240did that worm take steroids?
>>2830241Must have to survive that fight.
>>2830240Actually might be a sculpin, but I saw barbels on the underside. Doesn't really matter, still no real catfish.
caught my first redfish today, awesome time.
Thunder and lightning is real in florida
Yee yee! Thanks for biting, sir
Is going from pond fishing for bass to fly fishing for trout a big change?
>>2830370For me, yes. Pond fishing is not hard. However, fishing in really tiny spring creeks (the only trout streams here) is a challenge. Fly fishing is not that hard either. It's fishing for spooky fish in environments that demand a great deal of stealth and precision. If you're fishing rivers, it won't be very difficult.
>>2830346how do you even feel this on the line lmao, he's like bait the poor little guy
>>2830392Feeling a fish that size is no problem on an ultra-light. Sculpins are targeted in micro-fishing subdisciplines of tenkara.
>>2830416Cambodian Tadpole Trout aka Vietnamese Urethra Shark depending on what side of the border you're on.
Bass :3
>>2830240Prrtty sure thats a sculpin, not a bullhead. Lucky for you sculpins are cooler than bullheads! Unless you live somewhere that sculpins are called bullheads for some reason.
>>2830278Congrats anon
>>2830346Fish/10
>>2830370Pond bass and river trout are basically the same except for tactics techniques gear habitat and presentations
>>2830436>Prrtty sure thats a sculpin, not a bullhead.Ye. We used to call them bullheads when I was a kid which is ironic. I just misidentified it as a tiny brown bullhead because I didn't look that close before I got home though.
Weird catch with how muddy the place I was fishing is.
>>2830416It's a Blackside Darter.
>>2830436dude that nose ring is obscenely ugly
>>2830436Have you lost a lot of weight? Is it Ozempic?
>>2830447Keep fishing worms on the bottom youll get one eventually. Youll know its a bullhead it'll have the pointy dorsal and pectoral fins typical to catfish.
>>2830468Ive not lost a lot of weight, only 20 pounds or so
>>2829418 (OP)Anyone ever fish on the Snake River? I heard it has world class trout
>>2830504What part of it? The more north you get the more trouty it would probably get, lower down the snake river where it meets the columbia you have plenty of salmon. Personally only fished near the mouth of it spinner fishing for salmon but had no luck, watched some old guys catch some fatties by using shrimp a few feet away though.
>>2830458Oh neat, they're tiny. Is micro fishing that fun?
>>2830491>Youll know its a bullhead it'll have the pointy dorsal and pectoral fins typical to catfish.Fuck if I remember what catfish look like up close, I last caught one in like... '98-'99, it's part of the reason I'm going for them so hard. Not a single person around here cares about cat fishing, they're a bi product of sturgeon fishing so it pisses off the poachers.
>>2829765 here, trip went decently well. We didnt catch shit cuz I didnt prep my rods with adequate rigs the night before (was taking care of a load of stuff and didn't get around to it). Got grilled out pretty hard for the skunking but in a good natured way, excused it by saying this was the learning trip
Was far more focused on operating the boat anyhow, my biggest fear was crashing into shit so I kept it pretty slow and anchored pretty much any time we stopped like an autist. I'm glad I know what to expect for future boat outings at least. Next time I won't be made an ass of
>>2830517What a terrible suggestion.
>at the fishing hole with my buddy the other day
>I'm catching a few, but he isn't
>some family shows up and starts fishing
>kid who must be like six manages to catch two (apparently his first and second fish)
>buddy catches none
kek, I feel bad for him though. Every time we go fishing he always gets shown up either by me or in this case, a six year old. I'm not sure if he's just having terrible luck, if he's doing something wrong, or if I just have good luck. Even when he does catch something, mine always seems to be bigger. It's not even like I'm an experienced fisherman, I've only been into it about as long as he has (couple years) and although I go a little more often than he does, I'm still not that much more experienced than him.
Any ideas on how to help him have more luck?
What do we think about carp fishing (in a lake) while it rains? it shows that it's going to rain on friday when i have a day off and i planed to go fishing in the afternoon until it gets dark, but now it's probably going to be lightly raining
>>2830536Any day is a good day to fish. Was your backup plan a 6 hour good sesh?
>>2830346Etheostomatinae catch them mainly in a small fish net here in freshwater canals in Florida

>>2830506did you get some boating head at least
>>2830539I meant as in water quality and shiet, as i've read that fish are more active when it rains due to oxygen levels raising
im still going to go fishing don't get me wrong but i was just wondering if i'ts going to be better on avg. or worse
>>2830524Put him on to what youโre using if you get one. Iโve taken a friend out about a half dozen times and he still hasnโt caught anything. He typically runs off and does his own thing though. Last time I went and was just going to watch him fish and see if I could get him on one.
Spooling new pfluger 30 with 15lb braid
Can anyone suggest a knot to fix the line to the spool? I have some lighter mono as well, should I fill up the spool a bot with that first?
>>2830649Mono backing can help prevent the entire line from spinning on the spool. If you're starting with the braid though, use an arbor knot.
>>2830649surgeon's knot then tape it down with some electrical always works for me
>>2830649Go with mono backing and then tie in your braid. It's the most effective and cheapest approach. Arbor for mono to spool, Albright for mono to braid.
>>2830649I do a uni knot over a single full wrap of electrical tape to put straightt braid on a spool
>>2830581Fish activity can increase due to rain, but sometimes it can slow things. If the fosh are too cold, warm rain will get them moving, and if they're too warm then cool rain will get them going. If theyre already cold and get more cold rain, the rain is going to turn them off and slow them down.
Water quality concerns vary widely depending on the substrate, how much rain comes down, how long it rains, and im sure theres more factors im omitting.
I couldn't help but notice that there's no guide for catching Walleye or Muskie in the OP, two of the most common fish by me. I'm looking to get back into fishing and want to pursue some bigger ones
Ever seen a reel nice enough to fug?
I caught my first two tight line nymph trout! It was actually pretty easy without the weight forward line. Caught them on hare's ear nymphs I tied. They were both around 10 inches. Which is pretty good for the creek I was fishing. I was trying out a new body cam(If you're on IG you've seen the ads), so I didn't take pictures, but the body cam was too high up, so I didn't get that either, unfortunately. I should have had around the bottom of my ribs rather than the middle. Next time...
>>2830710Jelly. There are almost no trout left here in Russia because of poachers
Well /b/ was nice enough to inform me that I'm a faggot so idk
Real dink bass hours
>>2830693Both those fish are dicks. I know fuck all about walleye but i know a tiny bit about muskies.
They dont like hot water, much above 75ยฐ and theyre looking for cooler water, and at 80ยฐ and up you shouldn't fish for them because the mortality rates skyrocket.
Theyre the first fish spawning in the back bays come spring, and will love to shallow weed beds main bay in mid spring. Late spring to summer theyre going to keep creeping deeper until tgeyre on deep, ideally patchy weed beds in the main lake or in the mouths of bays. If the water keeps warming theyll move to deep offshore structure like humps and channels. Come fall transition, usually starting in September where i live, they move back to main bay weed beds. As temperature continues to drop tgeyll make their way towards deeper water to overwinter in similar areas to where they go when its too hot.
freshwater baitcaster, jigs, 100-150usd

>>2830759Check ebay. I grabbed my Shimano SLX for $40 and it's skookum. Hardly if ever used. The only options at that price range were el cheapos.
Rods? I dunno, I own a TFO professional I got for $120 because I like their products and it looks good but in reality any rod will do.
If you wanna be really cheap, Wal-Mart has Abus Garcia Max X combos for sale for $54. 6'6" medium power. Seems good for the money. Would rather a 7' rod but it should be fine.
Jigs? I dunno, it doesn't matter. I throw everything from whacky worms and texas rigs to crankbaits and spinnerbaits. I like chatterbaits and swimbaits a lot.
>>2830772Daiwa Tatula 100. You can grab them off their website for $150. I've never used one but people always sing their praises. You can grab the slightly larger CT version for $100. They're basically the same, just the CT is less palmable.
I've also heard good things about Lew's Speed Spools but I'd stick to Diawa or Shimano. I do like my Shimano SLX. They run about $150.
You can't really go wrong in that price range as long as you stick to the reputable brands.
>>2830759I saw some tatulas on sale, I think only right hand mdoels though.
> https://www.scheels.com/p/04317892205/finding a random sale or waiting for a good one is gonna be your best bet, but at msrp I'd probably go tatula at $150, slx at $100, or if you want the ability to throw slightly lighter stuff slx mgl 70 on sale. the new version is just called the slx 70 I think for $150 the tatula x just came out, don't know what's different about it, but tatulas are SUPER nice.
how do i get better at catching crawdads?
they are invasive here, so its helping the native crawfish, and its free food.
i have two net traps, but i feel my succes could be improved, right now ive had the most success with cat food and corn, but buying a tin of cat food just to catch 10 crayfish makes no sense.
what would you recommend for bait?
what are the optimal times to set the traps out?
any other advice?
i guess i could just get more traps
best soft plastics for salt water?
>>2830782Used to use leftover grilled hamburgers wrapped in foil as crawdad bait, worked every time and I have no idea why since I was a kid when we were doing it.
I cant throw more than like 30 ft with a 1/16th oz rooster tail with one size 4 split shot on a medium weight rod with 8lb mono. Is my rod too heavy or am I just bad ?
>>2830877Yes
Get a lighter setup and get good
>>2830782They're detritivores, they like rotten scent. I find traps work best after a few days when the bait has had a chance to sour, or use some stinky rotten fish for bait right from the start.
Do flathead catfish bite better at night like other catfish?
>>2830782Go to your local grocery store and ask for old, expired chicken legs/thighs.
>>2830763>Abus Garcia Max X combos for sale for $54. 6'6" medium power. Seems good for the money.I owned that rod and was able to sell it for $40 or so. I bought it for $90 a couple years ago. $54 is a great deal, but it's a shit combo. I only just got a new baitcasting rod in the mail today. I have yet to open it. A good deal on a shitty product that isn't fun to use is not a good deal. Save your money for a St. Croix Bass X.
>>2830877If you are throwing anything under 1/4oz total weight you will be much better suited by a lighter rod. Even a medium light is better suited for 3/16-1/4 so you want a light or ultralight. 6ft6 or 7ft for distance casting. Pair that with 4-6lb line and you will get double the casting distance.
>>2830759I was lucky enough to get my Tatula SV 70 on sale for $130 something. see
>>2830014 The gears are dumb smooth. Like two pieces of glass with lube in between. That's the only way I know how to describe the feel. You won't be disappointed with any of the newer Tatulas, even the ones from a couple of years ago if you find old stock for a steal. If you manage to find one with a SV spool for a good price, even better. They are hard to backlash. It's the nicest reel I own and I get the hype now. Can't even begin to imagine how the even higher tier Daiwas feel.
>>2830893The cold hard lands
they bites our hands,
they gnaws our feet.
The rocks and stones
are like old bones
all bare of meat.
But stream and pool
is wet and cool:
so nice for feet!
And now we wishโ
Alive without breath;
as cold as death;
never thirsting, ever drinking;
clad in mail, never clinking.
Drowns on dry land,
thinks an island
is a mountain;
thinks a fountain
is a puff of air.
So sleek, so fair!
What a joy to meet!
We only wish
to catch a fish,
so juicy-sweet!
>>2829822Tonight's project is the yellow sally. Pretty easy and I think they should fish very well.
>>2830916Oops...forgot the picture
i wanna go bass fishing once, seems interesting, do we have them in europe? we don't have them in my country
>>2830922it's not that different from pike fishing when it comes to the lures commonly used. bass are just more picky. I honestly prefer pike fishing.
>>2830891Flatheads are much more active at night than during the day.
>>2830917>>2830916I hate when i do that lol
Good looking tie, i dont see any reason it wouldnt be effective.
>>2830922If theyre in europe theyre invasive. From what little ive seen about targeting large european perch with lures, its a lot like targeting smallmouth with lures.
>>2830878>>2830902If I return it for a light or medium light rod will I be missing out on salmon? Am I missing out on anything trout-wise by getting a medium light over a light or ultralight?
>>2830940rod power relates more to the lure weights used than the species of fish or how big said fish is. you can reel a 40" muskie in with an ultralight, but you will be catching that fish on a small lure not a big muskie lure. so just look at what kinds of lures/rigs you will be throwing and base everything off of that. I don't have salmon here or know anything about them.
>>2830940If you want trout and salmon youre going to be happiest with two rods. The one youve got should be fine for salmon, consider saving up for a light or ultralightbfir trout- and also consider a glass rod for trout, glass is great for keeping small hooks pinned, espevially barbless ones, and it also gives you a lot of cushion when a fish surges, head shakes, or runs.
got the line stripper finally
>>2830952So why buy coated line if youre just going to scrape all the coating off? I was imagjnjng just stripping the bare minimum to be able to tie your rig.
>>2830954because somehow i didnt see that i bought coated braid line and you have to strip the outer layer anyway because else itโs too hard/thick, even in their official video the nash guy strips the line
are the lower end megabass rods worth a shit
levante specifically
>>2830940Go for the two set up option. Ultralights are great anyway, I fish mine more than any other rod I own. Just be prepared to lose quite a few lures and try not to break the rod overpowering it.
Keep your medium for throwing bigger lures and an ultralight for smaller baits.
>>2830946With the caveat that you're careful and in for a long fight. It can be done but sure isn't optimal. I pulled in a fully grown softshell and that thing weighed every bit of 30lb minimum on my ultralight. Took half an hour to bring it onto land and went I went to reach for the hook it broke off. 4lb test is a blessing and a curse sometimes.
What's the difference with boilies and pop-up boilies? Got both but im never sure when to use one or if the other one would be better
Any reason topwater frog wouldnโt be effective as a surf lure?
>>2830973Theres not many frogs in the ocean, theyre vulnerable to teeth, hookup ratios can be not great, casting distance relative to lure weight isnt always great, they like to drown fished in open water, and theres so many better options out there
Finally getting into some catfish now this year. I keep catching some nice size bullheads, are they any good to eat? I usually only keep channel catfish but if I get enough bullheads is it worth it to make catfish nuggets with them?
>>2830977If the water quality is good, bullheads are fine to eat. Itโs just that bigger catfish have more meat for similar hassle.
How long should leader line be? 15lb braid, 30lb fluoro. Does species or fishing method/lure weight come into factor?
>>2830981>Does species or fishing method/lure weight come into factor?Kinda, but personal preference is as influential as any other factor. If you can tie an FG knot, I tend to use twice the rod length in leader, but if you canโt, that would be awful.
