Just stating my experience. There are a million knots you can try, I've had good luck with FG in the application he presented. But things really depend on what environment you're fishing in and what you're fishing for.

don't sit your reel down in sand/dirt. prop it against a tree or lay it on something. sediment is the worst thing for a reel. especially if you don't take it apart and deep clean/maintain it regularly. I'm assuming you want a spinning reel? you can probably find the Penn Battle 3 on sale for well under $90 since the 4 has been out a while now. all aluminum and sealed bearings. look for 2500 size. shimano nasci is another choice right at the $100 mark since they just came out with a new 2025 version, you might find old stock for cheaper. will be much smoother than the penn but it's not all aluminum. not that it will be fragile. then just get the two piece daiwa aird-x or something. model AIRX662MFS or AIRX702MFS. I haven't used enough 2 piece rods to recommend any others, and you're limited anyways. try some 8lb yo-zuri hybrid line for added sensitivity due to low stretch. it's more like 10lb strength anyways. if you went the baitcaster route, you could get more bang for your buck but there is a learning curve.

The hospital in my town did some shit with their lawn recently and I don't know if they thought it through, because now every time they run the sprinklers it floods their lawn.

Do I put bluegill in there for shits and giggles? There's no cameras near that end of the lot and I think it'd be the funniest shit in the world to stock their accidental pond.

You could, but I wouldn't. If you're fairly close to the backing, just get new line. The line probably won't break or be bad for casting, but even though I am a cheapskate, I wouldn't do that.
>>2829397
I think you're very well-informed. I would get a 6'6" M/F rod with 8 lb line if I was only targeting walleye. If I was trying to get the job done for both pike and walleye, *I* would stay with 8 lb, especially since I'm not throwing monster baits on that Medium rod. But someone else might go to 12 lb. Just don't exceed what your rod is rated for by much.
>Is there any particular colour I should get, or just go with clear? Also, mono or fluoro (not going to use braid)?
What's your problem with braid? Braid is great. Definitely do not use fluoro on a spinning reel. It is kink and tangle in no time. That means you're using mono, which is no problem. I'd just get clear. Lo-vis green is also good but especially good for trout.
>>2829407
>I like the kastking Sharkey but there are literally countless good options
The Sharkey is a great reel for catfish, but it would be fucking terrible for walleye. It's big and bulky, not the thing you want to cast all day.

Glass cranking rod, is it a good investment? I haven't thrown many crankbaits because I couldn't throw them on the rods I got to start with. Then, I got into fly fishing. Now, I'm back to conventional fishing and am wondering what is the way to go here.

depends on the lures you throw, not even just limited to crankbaits. glass rods are great for hardbaits in general with treble hooks that are on the smaller side. if you're using large hardbaits with big trebles, you don't "need" a cranking rod because the barbs are big enough to hold even with a stiffer or faster action rod. if using a glass rod for hardbaits that require twitches like jerkbaits and topwaters, you can just go up a power so that it's not as floppy. it will still work well for crankbaits as intended. I like glass composite rods in general so I have lots of them. they really do keep the fish hooked up even on the tiniest hooks because of the shock absorbtion.

NTA.. I have a 4wt echo lift and a 6wt echo traverse. I personally prefer the traverse. It's about $50 more(250 vs 200ish). But it's a medium fast vs medium(almost into the light) and I like the action much better. The 4wt lift is great for small streams and creeks with dry flies. But it's not great for casting heavy nymphs, at least not at my experience level(beginner 1.5years in). When I'm fishing larger bodies of water like the lower Sacramento, I use the 6wt traverse almost exclusively. I can cast farther, more accurately and can cast drys, hopper droppers nymph rigs and streamers. Just my 2 cents..

I ended up getting the (new version of the) Ugly Stik GX2. 7'0", medium-medium, glass. I actually did end up going with braid based on the store owner's suggestion (it's a local tackle shop. A bit pricey, but it's the only dedicated tackle shop within like 200 kilometers so I'm happy to support it). I got 20lb dark green braid. All in all I paid $100 for it, not including the line and the other stuff I bought while I was there.
Now I have to decide whether to try it out tomorrow or wait until after work on Friday. It costs like $30 in gas to get to any fishing spots because they're all a 30 minute drive away and I have a gas guzzling old pickup truck, but there is a spot just outside the town I work in.

You did fine. People shit on the ugly stick but they're perfectly serviceable rods, I don't know what the reel they come with is like, but I'm sure it's also fine. Once you get used to closing the bail by hand to avoid wind knots you will love braid. Learn to fg knot to mono leaders and you're all set. Good luck!

I caught this fat bitch on my GX2. I even hooked a huge gator on it. It's a classic rod.
Now I rarely touch the thing but man it gets the job done.
Though when I first got the rod I broke the reel it came with in like a week. Put a Pflueger Trion on it and it's been a fine reel.

Oh, I already close the bail by hand every time actually. I was having trouble with wind knots even on mono. I also use my finger to put tension on the line when reeling in the slack after a cast so that it wraps around the reel properly (is there a better way of doing it?). I'm not sure exactly what the reel is but it feels nice and smooth. I can always get a better reel later on (and probably will eventually). For leaders I usually use metal ones, since there are a lot of pike around here and their teeth are sharp as hell.
>>2829566
Sounds like I don't have to worry about the rod breaking then if you can hook a fucking alligator and not have it snap on you, nice. There's nothing that big here unless I happen to get like a master angler pike.

Lads. I posted a month ago about how my leader cut into my fly line when it got tangled on a cast. I'm partnered with said company, so I won't name and shame them. The good news is that they replaced my line. My fly rod from them is a bit of a different story. They're still working on that one.

I've come to the realization that waders are tick and spider proof, so I've been throwing them on just to push through the tall grasses nobody else wants to walk through and it's been leading to some great fishing spots that haven't been touched since winter.

Honestly, cheap waders was the best thing I've ever purchased for fishing. You guys have any items you bought that changed the way you fish?

Instead of "women" think of them as toddlers. Even if you knew there was an unmissable hot bite on trophy fish, I would say focus on being in cool places, and bring lots of entertainment, snacks, and beverages. If they're sluts bring weed and twisted teas and swimming toys. They will probably only want to fish for about 25 minutes then you'd better have something else or they'll get bored and obnoxious.

Larger hooks can be easier to tie on. Even if you dont fish a lot of midges, tie a bunch of #22 midge patterns and when you go back to your #14 stimulators youll feel like everything is neanderthal easy.

Can't decide. I have neither a glass cranking rod (no cranking rods at all) nor a frog rod. I can only buy one, which should I buy first?
I think I would get a Mojo Bass Glass in 7'2" if I was going with the cranking rod, but I'm not sure what I should get other than a heavy fast for the frog rod. What's an ideal length?

cranking rod is way more useful. topwater treble baits, jerkbaits, you name it. frogging rods are just stiff sticks. you don't really have to get anything specific for that so long as it's stiff. I rarely use frogs these days personally.

I was curious about it, so I searched the line you posted above on YouTube and came up with a few videos of what you're talking about. In this video(different brand similar line), he just uses a coin(50p) and a hard surface to strip the coating from the part he needs to. But I also watched a video where they used an item like the one you also posted, just after the post with the braid in question. Seems like it's a very UK carp fishing specific product.

>Would gaiters be a better alternative?
I would say so, but I haven't tried them. I've given up on reducing sand and gravel getting in my boots for the time being. It's the cost of doing business. All I know is that when using gravel guard wading socks, the sand and gravel gets into the sock instead of the boot, which is way harder to get out.
The best thing you can do is find wading boots that aren't loose. I've wanted to try the Simms Zip-it Flats shoe, but I've seen a couple negative reviews, and I am dubious of their performance in non-salt environments, i.e. places with gravel, steep banks, and lots of walking.
You could also take the approach of total acceptance, that sand and gravel is an inevitable and perpetual irritant. For this, use Crocs or sandals. Obviously, you won't be scaling banks or boulders very well.

For me, yes. Pond fishing is not hard. However, fishing in really tiny spring creeks (the only trout streams here) is a challenge. Fly fishing is not that hard either. It's fishing for spooky fish in environments that demand a great deal of stealth and precision. If you're fishing rivers, it won't be very difficult.

What part of it? The more north you get the more trouty it would probably get, lower down the snake river where it meets the columbia you have plenty of salmon. Personally only fished near the mouth of it spinner fishing for salmon but had no luck, watched some old guys catch some fatties by using shrimp a few feet away though.

>Youll know its a bullhead it'll have the pointy dorsal and pectoral fins typical to catfish.
Fuck if I remember what catfish look like up close, I last caught one in like... '98-'99, it's part of the reason I'm going for them so hard. Not a single person around here cares about cat fishing, they're a bi product of sturgeon fishing so it pisses off the poachers.

Was far more focused on operating the boat anyhow, my biggest fear was crashing into shit so I kept it pretty slow and anchored pretty much any time we stopped like an autist. I'm glad I know what to expect for future boat outings at least. Next time I won't be made an ass of

kek, I feel bad for him though. Every time we go fishing he always gets shown up either by me or in this case, a six year old. I'm not sure if he's just having terrible luck, if he's doing something wrong, or if I just have good luck. Even when he does catch something, mine always seems to be bigger. It's not even like I'm an experienced fisherman, I've only been into it about as long as he has (couple years) and although I go a little more often than he does, I'm still not that much more experienced than him.
Any ideas on how to help him have more luck?

Mono backing can help prevent the entire line from spinning on the spool. If you're starting with the braid though, use an arbor knot.

Fish activity can increase due to rain, but sometimes it can slow things. If the fosh are too cold, warm rain will get them moving, and if they're too warm then cool rain will get them going. If theyre already cold and get more cold rain, the rain is going to turn them off and slow them down.

Water quality concerns vary widely depending on the substrate, how much rain comes down, how long it rains, and im sure theres more factors im omitting.

Both those fish are dicks. I know fuck all about walleye but i know a tiny bit about muskies.
They dont like hot water, much above 75ยฐ and theyre looking for cooler water, and at 80ยฐ and up you shouldn't fish for them because the mortality rates skyrocket.

Theyre the first fish spawning in the back bays come spring, and will love to shallow weed beds main bay in mid spring. Late spring to summer theyre going to keep creeping deeper until tgeyre on deep, ideally patchy weed beds in the main lake or in the mouths of bays. If the water keeps warming theyll move to deep offshore structure like humps and channels. Come fall transition, usually starting in September where i live, they move back to main bay weed beds. As temperature continues to drop tgeyll make their way towards deeper water to overwinter in similar areas to where they go when its too hot.

Rods? I dunno, I own a TFO professional I got for $120 because I like their products and it looks good but in reality any rod will do.
If you wanna be really cheap, Wal-Mart has Abus Garcia Max X combos for sale for $54. 6'6" medium power. Seems good for the money. Would rather a 7' rod but it should be fine.
Jigs? I dunno, it doesn't matter. I throw everything from whacky worms and texas rigs to crankbaits and spinnerbaits. I like chatterbaits and swimbaits a lot.

Daiwa Tatula 100. You can grab them off their website for $150. I've never used one but people always sing their praises. You can grab the slightly larger CT version for $100. They're basically the same, just the CT is less palmable.
I've also heard good things about Lew's Speed Spools but I'd stick to Diawa or Shimano. I do like my Shimano SLX. They run about $150.
You can't really go wrong in that price range as long as you stick to the reputable brands.

If you are throwing anything under 1/4oz total weight you will be much better suited by a lighter rod. Even a medium light is better suited for 3/16-1/4 so you want a light or ultralight. 6ft6 or 7ft for distance casting. Pair that with 4-6lb line and you will get double the casting distance.

The rocks and stones

But stream and pool

so nice for feet!
And now we wishโ€”

Alive without breath;
as cold as death;
never thirsting, ever drinking;
clad in mail, never clinking.
Drowns on dry land,
thinks an island
is a mountain;
thinks a fountain
is a puff of air.
So sleek, so fair!
What a joy to meet!
We only wish
to catch a fish,
so juicy-sweet!

rod power relates more to the lure weights used than the species of fish or how big said fish is. you can reel a 40" muskie in with an ultralight, but you will be catching that fish on a small lure not a big muskie lure. so just look at what kinds of lures/rigs you will be throwing and base everything off of that. I don't have salmon here or know anything about them.

If you want trout and salmon youre going to be happiest with two rods. The one youve got should be fine for salmon, consider saving up for a light or ultralightbfir trout- and also consider a glass rod for trout, glass is great for keeping small hooks pinned, espevially barbless ones, and it also gives you a lot of cushion when a fish surges, head shakes, or runs.

Go for the two set up option. Ultralights are great anyway, I fish mine more than any other rod I own. Just be prepared to lose quite a few lures and try not to break the rod overpowering it.
Keep your medium for throwing bigger lures and an ultralight for smaller baits.

>>2830946
With the caveat that you're careful and in for a long fight. It can be done but sure isn't optimal. I pulled in a fully grown softshell and that thing weighed every bit of 30lb minimum on my ultralight. Took half an hour to bring it onto land and went I went to reach for the hook it broke off. 4lb test is a blessing and a curse sometimes.
