don't sit your reel down in sand/dirt. prop it against a tree or lay it on something. sediment is the worst thing for a reel. especially if you don't take it apart and deep clean/maintain it regularly. I'm assuming you want a spinning reel? you can probably find the Penn Battle 3 on sale for well under $90 since the 4 has been out a while now. all aluminum and sealed bearings. look for 2500 size. shimano nasci is another choice right at the $100 mark since they just came out with a new 2025 version, you might find old stock for cheaper. will be much smoother than the penn but it's not all aluminum. not that it will be fragile. then just get the two piece daiwa aird-x or something. model AIRX662MFS or AIRX702MFS. I haven't used enough 2 piece rods to recommend any others, and you're limited anyways. try some 8lb yo-zuri hybrid line for added sensitivity due to low stretch. it's more like 10lb strength anyways. if you went the baitcaster route, you could get more bang for your buck but there is a learning curve.

Do I put bluegill in there for shits and giggles? There's no cameras near that end of the lot and I think it'd be the funniest shit in the world to stock their accidental pond.

You could, but I wouldn't. If you're fairly close to the backing, just get new line. The line probably won't break or be bad for casting, but even though I am a cheapskate, I wouldn't do that.
>>2829397
I think you're very well-informed. I would get a 6'6" M/F rod with 8 lb line if I was only targeting walleye. If I was trying to get the job done for both pike and walleye, *I* would stay with 8 lb, especially since I'm not throwing monster baits on that Medium rod. But someone else might go to 12 lb. Just don't exceed what your rod is rated for by much.
>Is there any particular colour I should get, or just go with clear? Also, mono or fluoro (not going to use braid)?
What's your problem with braid? Braid is great. Definitely do not use fluoro on a spinning reel. It is kink and tangle in no time. That means you're using mono, which is no problem. I'd just get clear. Lo-vis green is also good but especially good for trout.
>>2829407
>I like the kastking Sharkey but there are literally countless good options
The Sharkey is a great reel for catfish, but it would be fucking terrible for walleye. It's big and bulky, not the thing you want to cast all day.

I would get a 4 WT Echo Lift Kit. I think the similar kit that Redington has is also fine. The fly line in there is dog shit. After a few months of fly fishing enjoyment, find a fly line for $50+.

Glass cranking rod, is it a good investment? I haven't thrown many crankbaits because I couldn't throw them on the rods I got to start with. Then, I got into fly fishing. Now, I'm back to conventional fishing and am wondering what is the way to go here.
Anonymous No.2829520
>>2829513
depends on the lures you throw, not even just limited to crankbaits. glass rods are great for hardbaits in general with treble hooks that are on the smaller side. if you're using large hardbaits with big trebles, you don't "need" a cranking rod because the barbs are big enough to hold even with a stiffer or faster action rod. if using a glass rod for hardbaits that require twitches like jerkbaits and topwaters, you can just go up a power so that it's not as floppy. it will still work well for crankbaits as intended. I like glass composite rods in general so I have lots of them. they really do keep the fish hooked up even on the tiniest hooks because of the shock absorbtion.

NTA.. I have a 4wt echo lift and a 6wt echo traverse. I personally prefer the traverse. It's about $50 more(250 vs 200ish). But it's a medium fast vs medium(almost into the light) and I like the action much better. The 4wt lift is great for small streams and creeks with dry flies. But it's not great for casting heavy nymphs, at least not at my experience level(beginner 1.5years in). When I'm fishing larger bodies of water like the lower Sacramento, I use the 6wt traverse almost exclusively. I can cast farther, more accurately and can cast drys, hopper droppers nymph rigs and streamers. Just my 2 cents..

I ended up getting the (new version of the) Ugly Stik GX2. 7'0", medium-medium, glass. I actually did end up going with braid based on the store owner's suggestion (it's a local tackle shop. A bit pricey, but it's the only dedicated tackle shop within like 200 kilometers so I'm happy to support it). I got 20lb dark green braid. All in all I paid $100 for it, not including the line and the other stuff I bought while I was there.
Now I have to decide whether to try it out tomorrow or wait until after work on Friday. It costs like $30 in gas to get to any fishing spots because they're all a 30 minute drive away and I have a gas guzzling old pickup truck, but there is a spot just outside the town I work in.

You did fine. People shit on the ugly stick but they're perfectly serviceable rods, I don't know what the reel they come with is like, but I'm sure it's also fine. Once you get used to closing the bail by hand to avoid wind knots you will love braid. Learn to fg knot to mono leaders and you're all set. Good luck!

I caught this fat bitch on my GX2. I even hooked a huge gator on it. It's a classic rod.
Now I rarely touch the thing but man it gets the job done.
Though when I first got the rod I broke the reel it came with in like a week. Put a Pflueger Trion on it and it's been a fine reel.
Anonymous No.2829576
>>2829565
Oh, I already close the bail by hand every time actually. I was having trouble with wind knots even on mono. I also use my finger to put tension on the line when reeling in the slack after a cast so that it wraps around the reel properly (is there a better way of doing it?). I'm not sure exactly what the reel is but it feels nice and smooth. I can always get a better reel later on (and probably will eventually). For leaders I usually use metal ones, since there are a lot of pike around here and their teeth are sharp as hell.
>>2829566
Sounds like I don't have to worry about the rod breaking then if you can hook a fucking alligator and not have it snap on you, nice. There's nothing that big here unless I happen to get like a master angler pike.

>Would gaiters be a better alternative?
I would say so, but I haven't tried them. I've given up on reducing sand and gravel getting in my boots for the time being. It's the cost of doing business. All I know is that when using gravel guard wading socks, the sand and gravel gets into the sock instead of the boot, which is way harder to get out.
The best thing you can do is find wading boots that aren't loose. I've wanted to try the Simms Zip-it Flats shoe, but I've seen a couple negative reviews, and I am dubious of their performance in non-salt environments, i.e. places with gravel, steep banks, and lots of walking.
You could also take the approach of total acceptance, that sand and gravel is an inevitable and perpetual irritant. For this, use Crocs or sandals. Obviously, you won't be scaling banks or boulders very well.

Fish activity can increase due to rain, but sometimes it can slow things. If the fosh are too cold, warm rain will get them moving, and if they're too warm then cool rain will get them going. If theyre already cold and get more cold rain, the rain is going to turn them off and slow them down.

Water quality concerns vary widely depending on the substrate, how much rain comes down, how long it rains, and im sure theres more factors im omitting.

Both those fish are dicks. I know fuck all about walleye but i know a tiny bit about muskies.
They dont like hot water, much above 75Β° and theyre looking for cooler water, and at 80Β° and up you shouldn't fish for them because the mortality rates skyrocket.

Theyre the first fish spawning in the back bays come spring, and will love to shallow weed beds main bay in mid spring. Late spring to summer theyre going to keep creeping deeper until tgeyre on deep, ideally patchy weed beds in the main lake or in the mouths of bays. If the water keeps warming theyll move to deep offshore structure like humps and channels. Come fall transition, usually starting in September where i live, they move back to main bay weed beds. As temperature continues to drop tgeyll make their way towards deeper water to overwinter in similar areas to where they go when its too hot.

rod power relates more to the lure weights used than the species of fish or how big said fish is. you can reel a 40" muskie in with an ultralight, but you will be catching that fish on a small lure not a big muskie lure. so just look at what kinds of lures/rigs you will be throwing and base everything off of that. dunno, but at that price point you're in shimano zodias, and expride on sale territory. pretty hard to beat especially considering the vast number of models. even people with $500 rods tend to rave about the expride, and the zodias is extremely popular when it comes to being considered one of the best $200 rods. It's hard to tell if megabass rod reviews are just astroturfing or legit because it's usually megabass dealers like the hook up tackle recommending them on youtube.

you won't lose lures once you replace trebles with light wire singles that you can bend out 3/4 times when paired with the right line that's thin yet strong enough. that's a trick most don't think about.

>If you can tie an FG knot, I tend to use twice the rod length in leader, but if you can’t, that would be awful.
That is a ridiculous, unnecessarily long leader. A leader need only be 6 inches in length for most applications (metal, bass, walleye). For trout, an 8-12 in leader is good. If your leader is 2 rod lengths, just fish your leader material and call it a day. It's not like the main line is giving you can castability at that point.

I like a long leader for several reasons.
The most universally applicable reason is that I direct tie lures to my leader material in most instances, and this lets me retie multiple lures a session all season and still have plenty of leader.
Also, I fish close to abrasive structure pretty frequently, and a long leader is helpful in this case.
Third, it reduces the rid of casting off the lure if something goes wrong with my cast.
Finally, for my heavier combos, being able to hold the line on the thicker leader material instead of on the thinner mainline allows me to cast heavier weight lures and baits harder/further without having to resort to gloves or weird release techniques, etc.

And since I’m using the appropriate knot, the join feeds off my reel and through my rod eyes without significant friction.

If you're consistently catching bass while targeting cats, you're fishing for cats wrong. How are you fishing? Lures or bait? For cats, you want bait, the stinkier the better. Put it on a hook with a sinker. It should be on or near the bottom. Loosen your drag, so you'll hear it when it's taken and won't pull your rod in. Set and "forget". If you're fishing bait with a float/bobber, you're in the wrong water column for cats.

I've caught a lot of catfish during the day don't get me wrong but in that environment I tend to get 10+ bites from just about anything the fuck else before being in a situation the catfish can get there first. Catfish will absolutely bite on anything so I mean if you have a retard lure that wouldn't be good for anything, it might be good for catfish solely because it repels all the other hongrey fucks. night time is nearly all catfish for me.

Possibly try somewhere weedier/more turbid, afaik smallmouth like clear deep parts but catfish dont give two shits about no fucks so go somewhere gay catfish can probably live there

I'll find a better spot, this is a general sense of where I'm fishing, the red dots are places I can cast from into the current. Brown areas are where it's just shallow mud/silt. I've caught one single bass on the east side and besides that it's just mud it seems.

I can reach the north half through a a different route but there's only 3-4 places you can reach the bank because of how overgrown everything is.

bluegill aren't as line shy as other fish, at least not in the summer when they are aggressive. you can use just about any technique as long as it's size appropriately. drop shot is very effective, tiny hardbaits like the smallest rat-l-trap, yo-zuri cnap beans for shallow bluegill, you name it. when they are biting good, they aren't too picky. at least not in the southern us where I fish. you just have to locate where they are, and then it's pretty easy from there. a thick 9"+ bluegill in the warm months is some of the most fun freshwater fishing there is because they actually fight for their size. that's why ultralight fishing is so fun.
Anonymous No.2831471
>>2831391
Bluegills are terrific fun to fight for their size, but not very big. The lightest rod you have will be the most fun. You will do well with night crawler chunks, or small plastics, and even sometimes small hard baits. They will attack larger lures, but the hookup ratio will be poor, and if you use too much worm, they’ll just constantly steal your bait.

But it’s not like a heavy rod will matter to the fish, it’ll just be less fun and worse at casting light lures.

Also, how much of a meme are furled leaders? I hear they're pretty nice for ultralight fly rods.

Of course he also gave the suggestion of a penn pursuit 4 which can handle pyramid weights up to 6 oz. He just baits and waits with that on large pieces of bait.
I use this set up for rocky jetties as well, if you get stuck just pull really hard cause your mainline is gonna be 20-30 pound test braid with 20 pound mono that are attached to your steel leader. Also use circle hooks so the fish hook themselves (size depends on the fish you're going for).
However, I do not have whiting in my area and I have no experience with that particular fish. I fish exclusively rockfish on large pieces of shrimp unless i'm trying my luck on the surf.

As the quality species die off yeah.

Nobody else around me targets them except bow fishers who just cut the tails and leave them on the ground.

I started fishing for them because they large and nobody is fishing for them so easy.

Fun day out in the creek flyfishing for panfish.
Hoppers and chubby chernobyls weren't workin' for me but they sure love the elk caddis.

For $15 I'd grab 'em. The 700 would be perfect.

Download a copy of >>2832468 as a reference next time. There's probably a copy in your fishing regulations too, if you can get a digital copy of that. No adipose fin, so it was a hatchery fish. It does looks like a king/chinook to me.

To be a subscriber to either Fishing Florida Water or LosingBait on YouTube . Many would pick to be a Chomo rather then following an adult kek

New bread. This old bread is too stale even for French toast.
