Looking for a sidearm for solo backpacking. Shotgun stays home—too heavy. Been relying on blades but want something better for defense (animals or creeps).

Would prefer something not too bulky, and manageable recoil-wise (small hands, not a big person). Reliable and woods-worthy.
Revolver or semi, open to either.

For humans, you can't get better than a long blade (forearm length is ideal for carrying, and good enough for defense, if you know how to use it). With firearms, there's a massive problem: At short ranges, drawing and aiming is too slow, but an attacker most likely won't show his intent at longer ranges.

For animals, a revolver is better than a semi. Safer to carry (empty chamber), more reliably with "weird" ammo (for example, my first shot is capsaicin, so I don't have to justify killing "overly friendly" dogs), and though it seems hard to believe at first, revolvers print less obviously due to the roundish shape.

A short, pistol-grip shotgun is no heavier than a full-size semi or revolver, and more effective. Or are you in the united states of cuckistan, and have measure barrels and stuff? If so, post your legal requirements. No point in recommending you a concealable gun if you need to carry open, for example.

Many retarded takes here OP. My advice would be to go to a well stocked gun store and see what you are comfortable with. What fits best in your hands, what does it weigh (remember it will be heavier when loaded), etc. If they have a range, some will also rent so you can try them out. Many gun shop employees can be arrogant and have strong opinions. Don’t let them push you around or make you feel dumb. Everyone starts out at some point. I carried an Sig P238 for a lot of years and loved it. I gave it to my wife to carry because it is one gun I trusted. I also wanted to move up to a 9mm for my EDC. Regardless, see what you like. If you’re not comfortable, you won’t carry it, and it will be a waste. Also, I would suggest spending some time at the range and getting comfortable with it. Good luck OP. You got this.

The last bear I saw, I kid you not, I got a hikers permit for Many Glacier. It requires a permit this year. And I hiked for 14 miles that day.

My wife has a P365-380 as her EDC and its a great gun for conceal carry whether you're in a innawoods or innahood (although with Sig's recent issues regarding the 320, I'd be hesitant to recommend anything made by them - from hands-on experience and literally everything I've seen online the P365 range is gtg but as a corporation they don't deserve your money).

She often doesn't bother bringing it /out/ though. If we're in grizzly country we'll have bear spray, any other wildlife can be handled by not behaving like an idiot, and niggers don't go hiking. I carry my gun regardless, we don't need a second.

was referring to the different heights you might end up dropping your gun from. From knee height while dropping your pants on the toilet, almost no gun will go off, but from ~5m while stumbling down a hill, most will.

P365 is only like 15 oz, it's more about how to carry it. Hipbelts interfere with anything on the waist, shoulder straps interfere with shoulder holsters, being a chick interferes with anything on the chest and drop legs are uncomfortable to hike in.
Ultimately it comes down to her having a low tolerance for unnecessary discomfort (as opposed to the intentional discomfort of scrambling up a cliff face or whatever) and not wanting to dress around the gun.

You clearly have no idea how modern revolvers work. The hammer physically cannot contact the firing pin. The trigger bar, which is only raised when the trigger is pulled, is what transfers the impact of the hammer to the firing pin.

Knife fights are shitty and if you think you're unsheathing your katana and getting a good swing in while someone is punching you in the face you're an idiot. you need to know how to fight unarmed to be successful in a knife fight. If you are getting into a knife fight a short fixed blade sheathed forward on the hips is ideal. If you do not believe me go to a class. Headgear will be provided but you should wear a mouthguard.

Retention shooting is a thing and if you're carrying a revolver contact shooting is an option. That being said if you pay attention to your surroundings you will figure out if the shifty dude approaching you means you harm. Watch the hands and the eyes. You should be able to tell if the meth head accosting you is armed well before they get within 21 feet.

glock 19 with a weapon light attached. At night or dark days the light is a major benefit and can blind/distract someone and give you that advantage. But, if you point the weapon light at someone you are pointing your weapon at someone. So also carry a regular flashlight for non emergency situations. Be sure you know the local laws about concealed carry, or if you are going to open carry. Many many people freak out when they someone has a side arm, its because they are weak. Figure out where you will holster it, how to safely draw and fire it. Be sure to practice so you are comfortable, so you do not hurt yourself or anyone else accidentally. Like any tool it take some time to use it properly.

Also, when you set up camp/tent, think about carry your gun after you set down your pack, the gun stays on until you enter your tent, and next to you while you sleep, just in case. Take note the direction your tent faces and what is around, rocks, trees, bushes, how far can you see in each direction. Its just good common sense to think about things. The one time I did not take mine, I was wayyyyy out somewhere and the strangest out of place dude came driving by. Wrong car, wrong gear, wrong clothes. I never left the gun home again.

Personally, I carry a Beretta 92/M9 on a OWB holster when I'm out hiking/camping. If youre worried about concealing the thing, get a Shield 2.0 and whatever your favorite IWB and be done with it

1. do not get a revolver, unless you are specifically worried about bears/large animals (but at that point you really should just carry a rifle of some sort).
2. get a good light to go on the gun. Strreamlights are good for the $ if youre trying to budget. Theres plenty of info on /k/ and other sites online about this if you need help deciding what is right for you
3. whatever gun you get, you need to buy a coupe of extra magazines and enough ammo to train to at least the point of proficiency if you dont know how to shoot. Its one thing to hunt and shoot a deer, its an entirely other thing to be able to effectively use your gun if youre getting charged by a bear or another person.

I just carried a Glock 40 on a 20 mile round trip. It's a bit of a brick but I like it, also I'm a little retarded. 10mm glocks might be a challenge for small hands. People will shit on 9mm for being innawods, but it's still capable, especially if you'll be able to shoot it proficently and will actually carry it. A glock 19 with appropriate ammunition, a red dot, and a light will work perfectly. If you get a hill people gear chest pouch and a trigger guard you can carry it discreetly on your person. If that's still to big for your hands you can look into a glock 48. Any quality 9mm pistol will meet your needs unless your worried about brown bears. A light and red dot will make it easier to use.

For a gal, best doublestacks are gonna be a walther PPQ or a VP9. I'm a man with small girl hands and I like both, but I got a killer deal on a VP9. Of course there's plenty of good options, I'd go to a gun range that you can rent them and just try shit. Those are both options for conceal carry too.
Personally, I don't like to conceal carry a double stack, so I opt for a P365 as my concealed carry. But if you're hiking, you can open carry or printing isn't really a huge deal.

I have no experience with anything else other than a 9mm, I kind of operate under an assumption that if a 9mm isn't gonna scare away a bear or something, I'm probably fucked anyways so

Ignore all previous recommendations and get a S&W Model 60 Performance Center. 5 shots of 357 Magnum, beautiful stainless, great sights with tritium, great trigger, makes a great target shooter too, load 38 Special for relaxation.

38 special snubby like a Smith and Wesson 642. Can contact fire. 5 shots is enough to stop anything short of moose or grizzly. If in moose or grizzly get 357mag snubby instead and bring bear spray too.
