The only correct answer. You don't need to lug a 200lb oak box out with you camping.
I get it, its probably for an RV/camper, truck nuts, or a cabin. But most of us broke ass nikas aint got that kind of cash.

They are a fun DIY project, and will outlast a plastic box by a factor of 10. Mine isn't anywhere near as complex as the ones in this thread. I just made a flip-top box I can store my kitchen stuff in and which is strong enough to use as a bench. pic unrelated.
I'm not shitting on your choice, though, because I use them for storage.

I really like the idea of an all in one camp kitchen/storage box but for now the plano box and a camp table will suffice.

They are also about 100x much more expensive.
And 100x heavier.
Plastic box is the best box.

And I am shitting on your choice, because I'm right and you're wrong.

Kinda joking, they are quaint but way too damn heavy. I'd maybe build one if I had a cabin to go to for weekends/a few days or something, other than that, nah.
I'm not hauling it on my back and if I have to be next to the car to use it, I'll just store shit in the car in totes, bags, whatever.

The wood I used was all free salvage. Do you use rain gear, a tent and tarp, or just bring trashbags?
You could shed a lot of weight and expense by just using trashbags.

Nah, you're just cherry picking applications and setting your own usage as the standard. It's egotism, that's all.

why do people insist on taking the entire fucking kitchen when they got camping?
what an insane waste of time, space, and so much unnecessary complications.
When I camp, I bring a bag of trailmix, and foodstuffs that only require hot water to make. For long camping I will dump 3 boxes of uncle bens rice and a taco flavoring packet into a gallon size ziplock bag and take two cans of spam. thats it.
i keep it simple.
i fucking hate fucks who try to cook meals and drag all that shit with them.
only exception if fishing is involved, then all i need is a cheap pan, and a quart of cooking oil. even that is a fucking hassle, scrubbing that pan, and dealing with smelly fish crud.

Base camp mainly meaning the parking lot.

Car camping is a type of camping and it's about all these things would be good for.

>>2832067
If you've done a conversion like that with the bed, you don't plan to use that car for anything else whatsoever. And there's much to be said for having everything in one spot already packed and ready to go, rather than having something that moves and needs packing.

i disagree that its only useful for car camping, though its obviously convenient in that situation. if youre camping on some land with a few other families or couples, a larger group just out there bushwacking it for a week or so, I can see this being used. any group bigger than 'just you and your buddies' i feel.

gives me nostalgia for back in scouting days but I always found the boxes a hassle. Especially with a bunch of sperg kids in your troop who only want to eat PB&J. Half the time we just made mac and cheese. A big pot over the fire or small stove would have sufficed. And we still had some moron break the one tiny stove we brought by fucking around with it.

Youre asking why do people cook at home when they can just shove processed slop from plastic pouches or take out bags because thats simpler and easier. Its perfectly reasonable to take shit to cook a real meal with, even backpacking, because its better for your, cheaper, and not much harder or more difficult like your whinging implies. Learning to cook while out is a valuable social skill too, bitches love my backcountry meals.
