First for best telescopic rod is the one you exchanged for a 3pc.
Talk about fishin
This thread is named the "Soft Plastic" Edition in honor of the absence of whores with fake tits. Juicy tits are nice. Hard plastic ones are never nice.
KVD had 24 hours to make a new thread, and I'm now picking up the slack.
>>2832684 (OP)Much better OP picture than an ugly slut with fake tits
>>2832767agreed. more fishes, less bitches
early fall this year? earlier fall run?
i'm getting antsy
>>2832784the river mouth/bay i frequent has been full of bait, i see terns diving into the water and coming up with tiny 2-3 inch skinny silvery fish, smelt i guess
mackerel and squid are easy to catch, but i don't know about pelagics
hard to target them when there's just so so much bait in the water
i'm waiting for everything to start schooling up to head south so i can hopefully get some good topwater action
>>2832777Yeah, it should be pretty cool this fall.
Farmer's Almanac claims cold and dry in the Northeast which I could see but take it with a grain of salt since they have like a 50% correct prediction rate.
Hopefully it'll be wet enough to go trout fishing in the Appalachians for me.
Tied up some new nymphs. I'm thinking a curved hook would work better than the straight ones I have. I have some curved ones I bought for my stimulators, but they're 3x long and 1x fine. I'll look for some in the 1x or 2x long and 1x heavy next time I stop by the fly shop.
I just saw the charge for my first smitty's box. I'll share what all I get when it arrives. I'm excited! I hope they picked a couple good ones!
>>2832803wow.....they look terrible on my computer screen! lol...they looked ok irl and on my phone. But seeing them now on the computer screen....
I've got lead showing and terrible tapers on my zebras. And the demon midges just look....terrible! The red thread is totaly drowned out and you can't see the black ribbing at all. I'll definitely need to work on these... The copper ones look ok, but the tails are way too short on three and too long on the fourth :P I knew that already, but seeing it on a large screen....ugh... I think I'll try something smaller next time too. Maybe cock de leon. I used pheasant tail and it looks like it added a lot of bulk to the body.
My cousin is getting married in a few weeks. He lives in Denver, and that's where the wedding is going to be. I have some health problems that result in lower energy and oxygen levels. Several years ago, I went skiing in CO and felt sick almost the whole time.
I want to go fly fishing, and I want to avoid people. What is the likelihood that I'll get sick, especially if I camp out near the streams? Is free primitive camping an option in CO? What are options for motels like in the vicinity of (~1 hour away) serene trout streams? I want to do some research, but I don't know where to start?
>>2832836>Is free primitive camping an option in CO?No there are zero national forests in colorado
>>2832804They'll catch fish just fine. My gripe is that the collars on those hunchback flies should be brushed out a little more. Either that or there was some issue in how you dubbed them. Also, I dislike those double long nymph hooks, but it seems that you are already aware of the issue with them. If you want a bigger fly, get a larger size hook, not a longer longer one.
>>2832684 (OP)This picture sucks and OP should be ashamed. Post bobs.
>>2832841I wasn't sure how much to brush out, so I erred on the side of caution. I can brush it out more. I only hit it lightly with a nylon brush.
>>2832848stop gooning to cheap 3d sluts and start gooning to the notion of the perfect cast and gorgeous fish
>>2832841After doing some looking around, I guess it's not necessarily xlong I'm looking for, because the hooks I'm seeing that match the shape I'm looking for say they're 1x short. But this is the shape I'm looking for(picrel). It's the curve as opposed to the long straight shanks on the hooks I have. I'm actually trying to go smaller, not larger.
>>2832878Catching fish, hell even just getting a good strike on my lure, is far more pleasurable than masturbation could ever hope to be.
>>2832803I liked the general shape of the coppers, if not for the bulkyness. I realized today I accidentally used 140D instead of 70D thread. So that definitely played a part. But anyway, I liked the look, so I tied another bunch of zebras on them. I think they came out much better. I bought these hooks to tie perdigons. I still need some new hooks for beadless nymphs. But I like them for the tungsten headed flies.
>>2832726lure almost bigger than him
>>2832951Thats why I prefer Tarpoff fishing
How do you get brown trout when they're swimming lazily near the surface? They completely ignored various colors of inline spinners and shallow worms. They'd nibble on a silver Rapala floating minnow but I only hooked one 12 inch guy. Some of them looked gigantic.
>>2832849You want to brush the shit out of it. You can even pick at it some with your bodkin as a finishing touch.
>>2833032Gooners don't belong /out/side. Stay in your mom's basement, degen.
What do you think about pen rod guys
>>2832890>>2832879I tie my zebra midges on straight shank hooks but if curved hooks make your autism happy then send it
>>2832892I love angry dink smallmouth almost as i like angry normal size smallmouth
>>2832997Id probably want to try a dry fly but ive not fished that exact scenario
>>2833049Funny meme, shit-tier for actual use. The ones i tried were all supremely fragile and the reel is made of cheese.
First big 'minner of the year.
>>2833099Better for scale. Got it off a bridge and man did it knot up my line on the way up.
any leaf anons here? I haven't caught shit this month, maybe because it's 10 trillion degrees and I don't have a boat.
>>2832684 (OP)Never forget that he my be fat, retarded but at least he's not a sissy bitch pretending his "anonymous" like it's 1995 again.
I wanted to get into fishing for months. I was pretty overwhelmed with all the options in Walmart and Dicks and went to a smaller store. The guy set me up for 25 bucks, cheap rod/reel, float, size 8 hooks, a few lures and some nightcrawlers.
I managed to catch some perches and bluegills with the float and nightcrawlers (when they didn't just eat the worms off the hook.) But I didn't have any success with the lures. 2 of them, i think are spinners, one of them looks like a caterpillar that moves around under water. Do i need to keep trying or are they cheap shit that wont catch anything?
Any tips on catching anything bigger than bluegills / perches or to get more catches and less stolen worms? Or other beginner advice resources?
I plan to get a better rod/reel setup in the future, maybe next year, for now I want to build up more skills and tackle.
Pic related, my first fish.
>>2833108Grats on your first fish.
>>2832997this time of year there is a ton of food in the water for them
i find brown trout especially will get keyed in on a specific food and won't eat anything else
when there's a big hatch going on you have to have something that resembles the actual insect really well or you don't have a chance, especially in clear water
even with a good bait to match the hatch it can be difficult because there's just so much food for them to eat
Hooked my first ever sturgeon yesterday. He got the weight caught in a rock and spat the hook when I couldnโt keep him pinned because of the snag. Whatโs a better rig than a Carolina rig for bottom fishing swift rocky rivers?
I did get close enough to look at him, while wading to try and get off the rock, he was easily 5 feet, and I could barely turn him with a size 60 Rover and 65 lb braid.
>>2832997>>2833136Sometimes, trout are just not eating or are not angry enough to destroy trespassers. They can be moving from one place to another or simply resting. These fish aren't worth wasting your time on. They simply won't bite.
>>2833139very neat! there is a "put and take" (essentially a stocked commercial "pay to fish" lake) near me where you can fish for sturgeon, always thought about going, but, i dont have the gear for it, so i would also need to rent the gear, you have to follow VERY strict rules, cant really "land" the fish, has to be in the water, an attendant has to come and help you unhook it, all sorts of shit.
Sturgeon arent really native to my country, so i guess it makes sense, iยดm not a "trophy" fisherman, im happy just going for perch, zander and pike.
would you say the fishing experience, from like, the hook up i guess, to getting it in is worth it? of course big fish is always cool. but catching one in basically a zoo just kinda feels ... meh
Friendly reminder that fish dont care about your line
>>2833108Post the lures for us
Sounds like youve got a decent start. I wouldnt worry about bigger fish for a hot minute, just keep fishing and make notes of where youre seeing/catching fish. Big fish will come with time and there's no shame in small fish.
Congrats on your first fish.
>>2833139Santee cooper rig. Use lighter line to the weight, if it gets stuck itll break off and youll get everythjhg else back.
>>2833142The rules here are pretty stringent too. Naturally reproducing sturgeon are locally abundant but extirpitated from or at least vanishingly rare in thousands of kilometers of former river habitat, so if you want to keep one, you have to get a tag for each fish, like hunting deer or bear. I think Iโd like to keep one one day, but not right now.
Anyways, IDK if I would participate in your situation. I have complicated thoughts about artificial โfishing pondsโ even for regular eating fish like walleye or trout or crappies, never mind what sounds like a really weird experience if you wanted to sturgeon fish in that situation. The minute or two I fought him before he wedged my weight in that boulder was pretty cool, but not as amazing as the first time I caught a shark or a tuna or a 1.2m musky. It was a 40-50 kilo fish from a fishery which has produced verified 75 kilo and unverified 110 kilo fish, so itโs going to be a thrill regardless, but my pb musky on the same riverway was a better fight despite being ~1/2 to 2/3rds the weight. If you just wanna bend a heavy ass rod and fight a powerful fish, big catfish or ocean going predators are cooler than stocked pond sturgeon by far.
>>2833150>Santee cooper rig. Use lighter line to the weight, if it gets stuck itll break off and youll get everythjhg else back.do you mean a 3way rig or running ledger rig? The Santee Cooper just seems to be a Carolina rig with a peg float to get the hook off the bottom. I need the hook on the bottom.
>>2833180I misremembered the name, and the name seems to be disagreed upon anyways. Some posts call it the super slider rig, pic rekated calls it the double barrel rig. Regardless, its basically a carolina rig, but if the weight gets stuck its tied on to a weaker line that can be anywhere from inches to feet long and will break off leaving you firmly tehhered to your fish, or at least not stuck on the bottom anymore.
>>2833183>>2833180This one calls it a paternoster rig
>go out out fishing
>lose a foam beetle
>gain a rooster tail and a wooly bugger
The creek taketh, the creek giveth.
Took out my 2wt glass for the first time. I understand the appeal of glass now.
>>2833150>fish don't care about your line. The color of the line best make a bit a difference, some fish are picky it's been proven fish can see colors.
There's a reason why a lot of hard plastic baits have a red head because color makes a difference..
Mono and floro will always be nearly invisible in almost all water color.
Where highly-vis colors are used by lazy and newbs to help them see some they might be getting a bit or not at the hook.
>>2833215Red is not visible below 16 feet of water, that's as deep as red light can penetrate. So, unless you're fishing shallow, red on lures is a meme.
>>2833215This must be the fishing Florida faggot. I am mostly a fly guy, but my friend and coworker is a very competent angler. He likes to fish a whacky rig on a spinning rod with hi-vis yellow line. He uses it after missing a fish or simply to cover a particular spot. The reason for the hi-vis line is so that he can slack line the bait when drifting in his kayak but still detect bites visually. Plus, he has a leader on anyway.
>>2833215I never used high vis line until just recently and bright blue braid hasn't stopped me from out fishing everybody around me when I go out.
Line really seems to barely matter. The blue is nice though, nobody can blame me for leaving line around because you know if it's mine.
>>2833219Yeah, his name is matt, hes got delusions of grandeur or something just ignore him
>The reason for the hi-vis line is so that he can slack line the bait when drifting in his kayak but still detect bites visually.Thats why i run high vis line on most of my spinning and baitcasting setups.
Even when i am fly fishing km usually running very heavy tippet. Last time i used less than 3x was because 3x wouldn't fit through the eye of the hook the nymph i wanted to fish was tied on.
>pic related, a 24 imch lake run rainbow that ate a musky lure on a 25lb mono leaderIts a repost but you can literally see the mono in the picture with ease
>>2833266>Yeah, his name is matt, hes got delusions of grandeur or something just ignore him Can you sodomize him for us? You know, with a broomstick or a baseball bat.
>>2833217>>2833219>>2833254this is called someone who is a professional consumer. they buy have anything just because they believe it would increase their hookup ratio when it comes to fishing. before companies started selling the products to anglers people did what some still do use a bamboo stick and a string some people use leftover fishing line left on ground by superior fishmen with their bait casters, van staal ect and bottle or can and catch fish they not looking for other anglers to have circle jerk over how much they spent on a hobby reminds of a time I was fishing the olds were bird watching and taking pictures of them with their fancy cameras one guy walks over where I'm fishing starts snapping pictures of birds before I knew here comes the other guy over by my spot and they bragging about how much their cameras were.
> expensive reel
> expensive rod
> expensive lures
> cheap line
> cheap clothes
> cheap car
> cheap house
like it or not, this is the way. the most important part is the cheap clothes part, because you will go swimming for your expensive lures when they get snagged. my line in the sand for going swimming is if a lure is over $7 I even went swimming for a $3 lure once because it was on sale when I bought it, and it normally cost $13.
you're either fishing or you're catching
>>2833439actually i'm working remotely
>>2833423i like using a nice reel because it feels nice.
>>2833529the only 'nice' reel i'd consider is a van staal so i can bust my ass on the rocks in the surf and not worry about using my rod and reel as a third leg
even then they are so fucking expensive
>>2833530that's good to know. i try to buy plenty of things used.
>>2833531if someone could make some sealed reels that can stand up to saltwater and wash with suspended sand for around half the price it would be awesome
fucking hell man what the fuck is a jig rod
>>2833544a rod you use to fish jigs
>>2833544> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jig
>>2833530Explain why a Van Staal is a nice reel I'm legit asking everyone who claims Van Staal is a good reel because I'm gonna use ChatGPT to help me make a book how the Van Staal it's gonna make people cringe hard but fill my pockets with shekels.
Caught a nice rainbow up in my little creek. One of the biggest I've caught up here. Caught it on a stimulator I posted a couple threads ago. I caught a couple smaller ones too on a hare's ear and a yellow sally.
>>2833573it's just the most well known fully sealed reel, meaning saltwater doesn't get in and corrode the mechanism, nor sand if it gets submerged in the wash on a beach
so i can stick the butt end of my rod down like a walking stick when i'm wading to my rock and not worry about it, same if i drop it accidentally
some people even swim out to a rock with their rod tethered to their belt suspended below them
Went trout fishing today. Everything is so overgrown. It's like a fucking jungle out there. I would rather be bass fishing this time of year, but I don't have a good method for hauling my kayak yet. I'm waiting to buy a truck. A kayak is kind of necessary right now because the water is high af. Wish me luck tomorrow.
some retard slammed my rod in the car door. anyway rec me a rod i can use for salmon fishing from the shore and surf fishing in washington state
Just ordered reddington's euro nymph field kit. 10' 3w with a 5/6w reddington "the run" reel. Comes with Rio FIPS euro line and a Rio euro leader. I also ordered some SA fluorocarbon tippet in 5x and 6x.

>>2833601I dont have any rod recommendations, but, make sure to keep a section of the broken rod, makes a fantastic blow tube for campfires
Iโve never gotten so much as a nibble with fish bite bait. Does it just suck?
>>2833604Nice. I've got that reel and a now discontinued Sage euro rod. The rod is too fast for my taste, but I do like that reel.
Never knew shiners chilled in creek riffles. Kind of like poor man's trout. Some of the bigger ones actually put up a fight on the 2wt.
Lots of fun. I'll have to start watching out for them when I go fishing in warm water creeks.
I really liked the way Simms Featherweight boots feel, but they fell apart so fast. I need some new wading boots. Does Orvis have any better offerings?
Going to take my girlfriend fishing for the first time
I'll have 2 rods for a carp that will be snoozing anyway in the water and 1 rod with worms for some small fishies
>>2833716wanted to add that the rod with float and worms will be for her to try
I got my first smitty's box in the mail today! Both patterns are pretty basic. But I haven't tied either before and the intermediate one will be using the peacock feathers in a new way for me. I've only used strung hurls and not the thicker quills.
The beginner pattern is a foam beetle. I got 25 size 12 dry fly hooks, a spool of 6/0 black uni thread, some 2mm foam, prism dubbing, a sheet of rubber leg material and a long piece of indicator yarn for making the wing.
>>2833785The intermediate pattern is a H&L variant. I got 14ea size 12&14 dry fly hooks, a spool of 6/0 brown uni thread, a large patch of white calf body hair, two peacock feather tops and 4 whiting brown saddle hackle feathers.
I'll tie up some of these this evening, if I can find the time. If not, tomorrow. I should be able to find time to make a few of the beetles tonight though.
>>2833787* 12 ea, 24 total, I was thinking about the 24 total and mis-typed 14 ;p
>>2833581Ohh okay so you're saying the Penn Slammer III aren't water sealed?
That's a shame more people aren't aware of the fact that Penn who is owned by the same company as Vann Staal is makes reels water sealed for less.
>>2833581Ohh and I believe the most popular reason a lot of people like Van Staal is they're some what lazy and prefer to pay someone like me to service their reels don't get me wrong I don't mind the extra pocket change when it comes to $25 a reel i service basically i get paid for the cost of labor.
But you remind me of guys who have a nice car and take it to a car wash rather then taking pride in cleaning a nice thing you own. Too each their own yard?
Just so I can toot my own horn i got 3 reels in for service this week because other shops likely charge to much .
I've serviced Van Staal by the way mainly for bail arm replacement and damaged clickers
tried out my $12 rapala husky lure for the first time over the weekend. 3rd cast with it, flies off my line and into the water gone forever. entirely my fault for being a lazy fuck and doing such a shitty knot thinking it'd be fine. definitely sucks it's gone
>>2833839I always wonder how people lose lures on the cast. What knots do you people use? All I ever use is a simple uni-knot with 5 or 6 twists and it NEVER breaks unless I intentionally break it.
>>2833849it was a uni knot, but I only did 3 twists because I'm retarded. never had a uni knot break on me until then but this was entirely my fault
>>2833628would an okuma sst work okay for me instead?
>>2833857or a guide select pro. i dont understand what could be super different about these rods if you compare ones with similar ratings
>>2833647I just looked up the 5/6 Run and it's a $130 reel on its own. The Rio FIPS euro line is $60. I only paid $180 for that field kit(on sale from 199). All of the other field kits, aside from the spey which is the same price, are $500 each!! Aside from rod length and weight, they all appear to be the same in color and design. I wonder why the euro and spey kits are $300 cheaper?
I just booked a fly-fishing guide next week in the idaho south fork. What am I in for anons? Kinda excited
Great day today, guys. Called out sick to go fishing. I caught my PB brown at 18 inches. I was fishing a 4 WT in a new-to-me spring creek, but the width, flow, and temperature are unusual for the area. I mostly fought the fish upstream, and there were many moments where it felt like I was stuck to a log. I could not feel anything but consistent, unmoving pressure for several seconds until I changed the direction of my rod, and this happened multiple times in what was at least a 60 second fight. There weren't really any obstructions that he could've gotten into. That fish made my day, and I caught several others too, all on terrestrials.
One odd thing I noticed was that one fish ate my hopper on the surface. I waited a second and set the hook. I see the trout is foul hooked way down the body. How did that happen?
P.S. Skid, your hoppers didn't work for me. They lie on their side. The Charlie Boy Hopper was the fly of the day.
P.P.S I picked up trash and was rewarded. Yesterday, I got some stupid-looking hopper and a San Juan worm. Today, I got one bent spinner, a hares ear, and an elk hair caddis. I cleaned up a bunch of line, a few cans, and a bottle. That went well.
>>2833889Tipping is expected, which is terrible but true. You should tip based on the quality of the service. I'm sure you've read a list of instructions on what to bring or wear, so just follow that and have a good time. If you haven't fly fished before, you'll learn a lot. If you have fly fished, your casting, fishing, and reading techniques should level up. I have not fished with a guide, but that's what I gather.
am i the only one here carp fishing? seems like all of you are either flyfishing or just going with lures for trouts an shiet
>>2833908>pb brown troutHell yeah congrats anon
>foul hook after a delayed setWhat happened is that the fish spit the fly as you wrre setting the hook, it happens
>my hopper didnt workStrange. Im sorry it was being difficult for you. I forget the exact version i sent you, to bf honest. Was it on a barbless hook? My only guess is maybe the wire was too light to keel the fly. Did it have a wing?
>>2833934I carp fish on occasion
>>2833943>exact version i sent you, to bf honest. Was it on a barbless hook? My only guess is maybe the wire was too light to keel the fly. Did it have a wing? Yes, it was barbless and had a white yarn wing. I did not know that light wire could create this problem. Good to know. Still a fan of your fuzzle bugger.
>>2833949Yeah sometimes foam flies dont like light wire hooks. I probably never noticed because im usually running a dropper when i tie on a hopper. Glad you like the fuzzle buggers, sorry again about the oversight on the hoppers. I could probably fix them if i got some .010 or .015 lead free wire and glued 4-6 wraps to the bend of the hook right at the edge of the body, but its stupid that youd have to deal with it. Or maybe i over built the wing and its causjng teetering issues? Maybe both?
>>2833934I went after a school of carp this morning, they weren't eating. Instead I caught 12 or so pikeminnow. I'll post carp when they wanna bite.
>>2833785Here are the beetles. It took me a couple to get it down. I made several mistakes on the first two but the last two went very smoothly. The one in the vise is the second one I tied. The thorax section was very wide.
>>2834043Completely forgot the legs on the first one. I could go back and put them in, but I think it actually looks pretty buggy even without them.
Calf body hair is officially the hardest material I've worked with!! It's too short for my hair stacker, which is pretty small. And I can't seem to catch it to tie it in. I'm trying to pinch wrap it, but the thread just wants to slide right over and through it. It doesn't help that I'm trying to tie it in the opposite direction that I'm used to. I'll get it, but just wanted to voice a little frustration. If anyone has any tips for working with it, let me know please!
>>2833787And there's my first H&L. This calf hair is going to take some getting used to.
Jig napoleons, a pleasantly easy fly after the frustration of trying to deal with that calf hair. I just saw it on tightlinevideo's YouTube channel and thought it looked like a fun one to tie.
got my biggest perch yet, pic related. with bobber, hook and worm. wish you a nice weekend
>>2834185Lol imagine wrangling that thing up thinking the whole time it's a dink bass only to find the fastest perch ever.

Do you think doing some light rock fishing near groynes would work? I hear that the ends of them are good for larger fish, but small ones would probably use them as shelter wouldn't they?
I think tonight is finally the night I catch that catchfish I've been going for. If I don't return with photographic proof just remember I died doing what I loved.
>>2834194structure is always a good bet for fish.
