The locals make money off letting the hunters travel there to hunt, and have a vested interest in protecting the environment and ensuring a healthy animal population.

If there were no hunters paying to hunt these animals, there would be no reason for the locals to protect the herds snd environment. They'd wipe them out, farm over the habitat, or sell it to China to strip mine.
