Tent or Car?

Both. There are many places a car can not go.

Covid was when you faggots decided β€œcar camping” meant literally sleeping in your car.

Car camping is good if you are just passing through somewhere. Tent camping if you are getting comfy for a few days

Tent is more comfy than a car and you can camp everywhere

As long as you dont set right next to an anthill, nope. I accept that I have probably had spiders walk across me. I will use a tent for the height of mosquito season in the mountains though

car for super long distances and when i'm in bear country (i have bear paranoia when sleeping)

tent when i want to explore areas for an extended period of time

Sleeping on an actual mattress is unbeatable, as is all the luxury items like chainsaws or fresh food.
I did a 5-day car camping trip a few years back and went from a backwoods campsite all by myself to a national park and stopped by town for real food then back to camp every day. Minimal setup required. Could sit in a proper chair, shoot guns, etc.
Backpacking is nice in other ways.

For me it's either an hammock in fair weather, or the back of the truck in storms and floods

Tent that's big enough to park my car in because I like having the interior space and room to stand.

Truck. I've done tent, which is ok, for years. Did wagon a few times, very comfy. Now I camp in the back of my truck. Anywhere I want to go my truck can go and it's max comfy. I can't go back to a tent anymore.

How is the dust in the topper?
Anonymous No.2835931 >>2835935

Before I put a seal between the bed and the tailgate, it got a little dusty. With the seal between the tailgate and bed, I haven't seen any dust getting in. It runs down one side of the back of the bed, along the bottom, then up the other side. The canopy itself has its own seal that has always worked well. The only problem I've had was it leaked when I first got it when it rained. I have a rack on the top of it. A tube of calk fixed that.

I've done tents and hammocks for years now. Getting tired of the setup. Moving forward, I think I'm just going to set up a cot in my truck's bed with a simple tarp over top if even needed. When you think about it, if you're driving anywhere and will be posted up near your car, why even bother setting up a tent or hammock? Keep those for when you're hiking a few miles out.

There's nothing like waking up in one of these when the sun is just barely peeking out.

and also, there's nothing like waking up in the back of Falkor (that's my nickname for my trucky truck) long after the sun has risen and it's become a Hanoi sweatbox in there. Even white fibreglass man, it can roast if you don't get those windas open

I've been trying to find a small that will either come off the side or back of the SUV that I can detach from and leave for the day. Or just a good tent for storage and changing in.

The idea of camping out of a truck is actually making me consider buying a truck. Do any of you guys use your trucks for hauling, because I'm curious how easy / hard going back and forth between uses is, or if you have to consider one or the other.

if I have my car with me at the campsite I don't see why I wouldn't sleep in it. I only use my tent to sleep, if I can do it in the car instead it's one less thing I need to bring there and set up

Back of the truck is so fucking comfy in shitty weather

why not? it's the same thing except one gives the comfort of being surrounded by 2 tons of steel and the other is some flimsy fabric that needs to be set up and packed away every night.

oh hell yes. one night I got caught in a deluge that flooded the whole area, it was so cold out I could see my breath and the water was rising all around me. released the tarp and hoppped in the back with my beers and blankets, not another soul around and just fucking chilled away for hours with my candle lantern while the rain thundered on the roof like a waterfall. got nervous as the water ended up about halfway up my tires at one point, but it all ended well either way.

I currently have a Honda CR-V. I'm debating getting a Tacoma or similar truck. I can't decide, should I get a truck, if I should get a 5ft bed or a 6 ft bed? Even though I don't transport people, should I get double cab since I carry a lot of shit with me? I definitely want a cap, and originally, I was thinking of a 6ft bed so that I could sleep in it, but since I camp so little, maybe, a 5 ft bed and a tent would suffice. Additionally, I want to be able to haul a kayak. Will a 5 ft bed with a bed extender work well?

Car camping is for lazy people who want a compromise between the comforts of a sticks-n-bricks and the freedom of being out in nature. You don't pay to sleep, but you still get to sleep on a nice cushy bed that you can climb out of in the morning and be on your way in five minutes.
>>2835490
Other way around. There's no way you can fit a 6" mattress in a backpack, but it fits in a minivan just fine.
Anonymous No.2839154
>>2836274
That's one thing I appreciate about car camping, that it can potentially be a very comfortable bed but most of the year you're not going to oversleep because it heats up pretty quick after sunrise.
When I used to do solo cross-country road trips, there was something so comfy about stopping at a gas station that evening for a sandwich and a six-pack, then finding a rough Forest Service or BLM road to drive a few miles down and park for the night.
Anonymous No.2839306
When I road trip alone, I either rent a 4 door pickup truck, or a minivan and sleep inside.
With a car you can sleep in comfort anywhere, drive, pull over, sleep, wake up, piss out the door, and leave.

Namadgi National Park. It's lovely when the weather is nice, but in the mountains even during summer it gets feckin cold and blustery at night. 12 of hours of rain creates lots of concerns. They actually have a forced park closure in bad weather so I was supposed to have left in the afternoon but I stayed all night. The roads were almost entirely washed out but luckily in Falkor I was able to get out in the morning
