Rescues
What does /out/ consider a reasonable charge for rescuing people in the outdoors?

why not build concrete steps into the dunes?

It should hurt plenty, but not ruin them.
Mountain rescuers have to go out and save boomers with empty e-bikes from mountains all the time now.

Because that would encourage more soft bodied Brits and euros to visit, and nobody here wants that.

The shoreline is walkable and in either direction will take you to shaded roads or trails with a reasonable slope. It's probably a case of people getting to the bottom and not wanting to put in the effort to walk along the beach to the trail that goes back up gradually. The local S&R got annoyed at spoiled people expecting to be "rescued" from their laziness. You don't have to climb back up the dune in the "blazing" sun.

the charge should be their life, if you get lost to the point that you need to rely on some hypothetical rescue mission and cant be bothered even trying to get home (or just not being good enough, in that case, why be there?)
im not even trying to be edgy, its just unreasonable to expect (or demand!!) someone to come and pick them up and take them to safety

That would be bad for tourism, which these places tend to want more of, not less. For the local government, there's a balance between not scaring off potential tourists and not blowing the local budget on rescue operations.

>Sleeping Bear Point Trailhead
I looked on Google Maps to see where that is and it's nowhere near the big dune where everybody needs to be rescued.
The Dune Trail is nearly 3 miles north of the big dune and then you would have to navigate a maze of crisscrossing faint trails to get back to Pierce Stocking Drive. I wouldn't expect the average touron from Chicago, Detroit, or Ohio to be able to do that.
The only other reasonable alternative would be walking south to the forest roads near North Bar Lake, and then finding your way to Pierce Stocking Drive from there. That's still a fair ways away which you can see in the image I attached.

so should everything be catered towards tourists? should you personally be expected to suck every tourist cock? of course not
its not even about the budget, its the principle of the thing. if you want to have fun innawoods you can do that. you shouldnt expect the woods to be safe even with potential rescue helicopters hovering above
there are a few reasons why i think its asanine to have rescues like in the op, one is people often dont actually need it. obviously for a medical extraction this doesnt apply but if you walk down to a beach there is a very good chance that you are more likely to bend under the pressure (could you imagine walking, but uphill?) than actually be injured. this goes to the second point of the false sense of security. if you go into the woods knowing that if you get lost its whatever because "someone" will find you youll do riskier and dumber things. imagine if a country made it illegal to do rescue missions for lost hikers, just knowing that youd be stuck out there will always be in the back of your mind. youd prepare more and you wouldnt do something dumb
the last reason is to what end? how safe does the world have to be? why not just ban cars and dogs and mandate everyone to wear helmets while walking? it would save lives, right?

>its unreasonable to expect people who can walk hundreds of feet down a steep sand slope to also be able to walk 1.3mi along an easy coastline to the road
I've been here, you have to be the laziest retard on earth to need rescue
Its pretty cool though. Highly recommend. I did not walk down because I didnt see the point, it is a goober tourist thing.

* its 1.3mi total. Its like 200' along the coat to that 4x4 Bar Rd, then you walk along an easy 4x4 track to the paved road.

Anyway, no actually you should never visit northern Michigan and make sure to tell all your friends it is run by mean fascists looking to milk you for thousands of dollars thanks and never go there. Wisconsin is much nicer, go there, they have cheese.

>walk hundreds of feet down a steep sand slope
That's the easy part. Anyone can fly down that slope. Going back up is what gets out-of-shape tourists into trouble. And they have no idea how to get back to the scenic road if they're not /fit/ enough to climb back up the same way they came down.

If you're too fat and stupid to walk up a hill, then that's on you. If you can't get back up without requiring multiple other people to carry you, that shit should cost you, and honestly, it should be a fucking wake up call as well.
