is great lakes surfing a meme or is it like an actual thing?
I live less than two hours from both lake superior and lake michigan, and I was thinking about picking up surfing
I have heard that fall is when the waves are biggest, so I would probably have to Invest in a dry suit

lake superior water temp is rarely higher than 50f/10c, you need a suit year-round. if there are non-shitty breaks I've never found them, and the only time anything fires is in dangerously shitty conditions. you need to be desperate and at least a bit suicidal to take on superior.

lake michigan is more manageable in every way but better suited to windsports - there are a number of really good windsurf/kitesurf beaches - notably Sheboygan, St. Joseph, and Muskegon have extremely active communities and ideal conditions. Not sure if the upper peninsula area has anything going on but

Ask the crew if the Edmond Fitzgerald how the waves are.

But yeah I’ve done it in winter during a storm. It was fun but wouldn’t and didn’t do it again. We were young and stupid and it was just something we did to say we did. There’s a trip report somewhere still on newschoolers lol. The anons saying that you have to be suicidal are correct it was sketchy as hell and not really even a good wave
