any decent tough compact options these days?

been kicking around the idea of lugging an A7 + marine case around with me, but i'd prefer to just get a dedicated STILLS camera for underwater use, but seems like anything standalone (not needing a case) is only for action camera use

There is a case for 160 bucks that lets you dive to 60 meters.

Honestly I might just sell my compact and buy a smart phone. Smart phones have good bokeh, flash and even telephoto now

No they don't. Apertures of like f/22 in terms of FF equivalentcy. Any sort of background bokeh is completely software generated.
Sure, throw $1500 at a flagship and you'll *sort of* have 1" p&s capability. Except wait a minute, you don't have any sort of ergonomic controls, your software is very limited, and **maybe** you get a 20mm "telephoto" lens instead of something actually useful like 24-105mm.

EOS-M w/ 22mm f/2 prime? Was thinking of getting one as a gift for someone who uses instant film but wants something that doesn't cost $20 every ten shots. From what I can tell, it's the best combo for Canon M mount due to the size and optical quality. Body is from 2012 though so I understand if it's an ancient pos compared to the more recent M series' like the M100; there's just a stellar deal on ebay right now for the M+22mm body+lens combo for fuck all money.

new to photography here, want a compact point and shoot so that i can use my phone less, esp when traveling. I've been looking at the ricoh gr & gr ii since they're affordable (~$290 & ~$360 on ebay) and I like the film-like look. can you charge the gr (original) with usb? looking it up i'm seeing confusing answers, and if not, is there some easy way to charge it otherwise? if it's not too much of a hassle, I'll probably go with the original gr since it's cheaper and seems pretty identical to the ii but I'm also open to other suggestions since I'm new to this stuff (last time I did proper photography was when I took photo/video classes back in highschool but that was all with dslrs/ cassette camcorders).

No sony has ever had interval shooting refocus and never will. You're meant to use a phone app or remote control to trigger af-s and then start the timer instead of walking into the frame after the timer starts. Because that's the more "professional" way, and they expect all timer users are landscape photographers or diving into an existing group shot. They have been doing this since the mavicas.

Asking sony for this feature would be like asking canon for a camera with full frame DR instead of forced NR. Its just not how they do things. And they are japanese. I would take an X-M5 over an X-E4 if they were otherwise identical, for the grip. I also put a grip on my RX100 despite it being very light, it's nice not having to squeeze stuff to grip it.

Doesn't look like an error code to me, I have one and just checked and those lines on the screen are part of the level display. Obviously being lens down on the surface it's not going to display an image but I'm curious if it displays one when pointed at something else. I also notice that it's taken a hard hit to the bottom right side, it's actually broke off a chunk of the metal body. Based solely on that I wouldn't buy it.

in general sony a6000 is one of the best values for small cameras and abundant second hand. for true compact, i was gonna say the standard is canon s95 but they are inflated to the moon now so you might as well get a fuji xq1 or olympys tg-6 for that money. below that, you're looking at digicams and crossign your fingers that it works

Fair enough. I’m a proponent of the Sony rx100 series. Quality is good enough to be better than your phone, they’re small and easy to use and have some cool features like super slow motion video and things like that. Don’t know what used prices are like but I still use my rx100iv regularly.

Also these 1" sensors are still really close to phones (in fact, phones are starting to come out with the same sensor size) so if you're not worried about pants pocket storage or just want a more camera feeling camera, and can find basically any micro four thirds with 16 or 20mp and a decent lens for the same price, go for that instead.
