im not really sure what draws me to them. I just like documenting. I like taking pictures of people. I like getting right up close and unabashedly taking a photo. its gotten me into some situations but it is what it is. some photos like >>4414382 and >>4414392 are just that, but i also am drawn to capturing scenes like >>4414378 and >>4414380. I think I like the scenes more.

These three where the only ones that produced any emotions in me, but I don't think they are great photos, their composition is haphazard at best. They are being carried entirely by the subjects.

there is no dynamic, no life, in "just" a man’s back against a soulless modern building. maybe if the people seen from behind were doing something. maybe if there were more perspective and motion. maybe. but this is so lifeless. it’s like the martins from vivarium are beginning to imitate photography.

i get what you mean about the composition. i kinda just run-and-gun with my camera because im nervous of getting yelled at, so i dont have alot of time to frame composition. next season i think ill be a little more ballsey and take more time. ive learned alot since taking these pictures last fall.
i also just got a flash that ive been using here and there and im excited to shoot with that too. it adds alot to the pictures imo

Yeah I think spending more time composing would be good, but I realize the time frame is also small, so maybe trying to pre-frame compositions and wait for the subject to enter the frame is better than trying to insert yourself? Idk, just an idea.

This one is good because of the social commentary on the relationships between men and women. She is apparently hugging him, but in reality she is bored, playing on her phone. Meanwhile, he isn't receiving the hug, he is standing alert and rigid, their relationship has only the surface level trappings of love, but devoid of the actual emotions. I think the images in order are a great example of sequencing. You really get the contrast to come though and they comment on each other.

those two photos you pointed out are on the same spread in the book. i really like the little bits of red, and the similar themes they both carry. these photos in this thread were uploaded in chronological order of me taking them, and I believe i get better towards the end.

Honestly OP, not bad at all. And at least you had the guts to photograph these people! I recently tried the same thing in downtown Toronto, and I froze up. So, kudos. And there are some good shots in here.

thank you! i honestly find the scariness of obviously photographing people really fun. it gets my heart racing, esp when i get confronted. I wouldnt worry too much in toronto, i always just tell myself that what im doing is completly legal, im not hurting anyone, and its for art's sake so im doing nothing wrong. You also get used to it. get out there and shoot and be sure to post ur pics!

You're right about getting the adrenaline pumping, and honestly some people respond differently to be photographed candidly, an attractive woman might be flattered, and an old guy might be annoyed. Like you said, it's all completely legal as there's no expectation of privacy in public. I'll try again sometime soon and post them! Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff!
