Recently I have had a mental block when it comes to approaching randoms on the street.

When I first started photography everything felt "new" and I was a lot more confident than I am now. I shall post some pics here and use this thread as motivation to be to shoot more and improve.

ill post some street portraits too to help motivate you. some of these are of ppl smoking cause i was doing a project where id take some1s portrait and then ask what kind of cigarette they smoke. it didnt work out very well because everyone was really unfriendly :(

Yes.. I think your selection might have been the problem. People smoking will usually be on their break/trying to chill so may be less likely to agree to a photograph.

You could have the approach 100% right but if you select the wrong people it's doomed to failure

i think ur spot on about the break thing. when it gets warmer im gonna try to ask college kids smoking outside of their buildings, they have cooler outfits and might be more friendly to me since im their age. before i was mostly asking homeless people, old people, and people on break, all of which arnt in the mood to have an F5 shoved in their face. alot thought i was trying to sell them something :(

How do you do it? I usually just have the cam `round my neck, walk past and burst them from the hip. They either notice or they don't.

I shot a picture of someone through a fence and they noticed me and told me to delete the photo but I said I can't as it's a film camera. They then proceeded to climb the fence and ran after me. Had to run fast and lost them thankfully by cutting through some backyards. Hard to shoot discreetly. Need to get me a Rollei or something small and quiet so these peeps don't know what's up
