Is it worth it? I showed my portfolio and the staff at the college seemed supportive. I'm not sure if they're just trying to get students' money.
Would they really admit me if I had no photographic eye / talent?

Do you plan on making a career out of it?

I don't really think people will choose between you and other guy because of the formal paper, if you can make a decent website, have a cool insta account, and are able to connect, network, and rub shoulders with other photographers easily then you don't really need the schooling.

No. Pick a normal major and just take photo classes in addition if your really want to.
No one cares about a photo degree, the big benefit is having that focused environment, being familiar with nicer gear, and making connections with local industry professionals.
If you know you want to be a photo pro, you're better off just starting with photos now and spend that time growing the business instead.

For a career this is the big one. Do not go to college if all you plan on doing is getting good grades.

most successful photographers are shit too.

its not exactly a snobbish high art. it is so accessible that people rate it on things that have nothing to do with artistic sensibilities like raising climate change awareness, invasiveness and trauma (for the sake of novelty, and a disturbing collective schadenfreude), and political relevance. look at modern magnum photography - it's /p/ tier at its core, it's just more politically relevant. you could probably win accolades if you shot a bunch of tarrif-ied gay people on 8x10 film under shitty lighting

It's worth it as long as you don't go into debt over it, and acknowledge you're going to get no monetary return on the investment. You'll be a much better photographer than Tony Chad over there, but Tony Chad is making a living off of photography and you're not because Tony Chad flunked out of business school, but partied with a lot of bros that became his clients later.
Your photos will gladly be placed in the local gallery exhibit and you'll win the top prize of a $100 gift card to a local Italian restaurant that was tasty when your boomer grandparents were dating but now it's gone to shit ever since the kids took over the business, then your photos will be auctioned off for charity at $50 a pop.

Photography school is a huge scam since mirrorless cameras exist. There is very little technical skill needed to do good photography. Photography has evolved into being close to pure art, so you can't learn it. You just take pictures that look good.

If you want to make a career in photography then please go there, network and make fuck tons of contacts. You will get to know the industry from the inside if you'll hang out with right people. Have good relation with your professors, they're your important contacts. But just know that you'll only become a good photographer to how you look at the world, what are you influences and how much you practice.

I want also suggest you to read the /p/'s sticky. Search for "Studying Photography-should you do it". It's a great guide to photography school.

Here's the tldr by tripfag "sol !!AS787Hm5LDG" who went to photography school:

tl;dr / summary
>Studying photography is a fine line. It’s not essential, but it takes you places. It’s not important for your clients, but it gets you contacts. It’s not for everybody, but everybody that was willing to learn, learned a lot. But most importantly: It’s not the same everywhere you look. I can’t emphasize this enough: Choose the place where you want to study correctly, or you won’t share the same experiences that I did and won’t get as much out of it.
If you chose correctly and manage to get through you will grow into a photographer and won’t have any problems working in the field of your dreams. But don’t get the illusion that you will suddenly be in the promised land. You still have to work very hard, be excellent and promoting yourself and still have to stand out from the crowd of photographers. Nobody out there is waiting for you, there are countless other people that can do the job as as well as you can, for less money. Nobody will care about your degree, only about your portfolio. This study path can simply show you the way and push you out of the door, it’s your job to be good.

>The main thing you’ll get out of this are the people and experiences, you’ll find very good friends working in the same field as you do. You’ll share jobs and recommend each other. If you manage to impress the professors you have the easiest foot in the door you can get, have a better time finding a job as an assistant as anyone else, get to know people that are usually way out of your reach. Studying photography can be a beautiful thing and the best time of your life, it can be a constant state of creativity, productivity and joy, shared with some of the best people you will get to know in life.
