I will be dumping photos from the DTLA Protests on June 8. If you were there and took any photos feel free to share them here too, image limit allowing. comment/critique welcome as it relates to the photos; if you want to discuss the politics of the event there's a different board on this website that starts with /p/. Most shots are on Gold 200 or Ultramax 400 through my SRT200 and a Vivitar 28-210 f/3.5-5.6; a few are from a crappy 90s minolta point and shoot and some are shot with Psychedelic Blues #5 (which is just hand-fogged Ultramax 400).

These photos are valuable. In 10 years they will try to tell us that everyone was at these protests, not 100 mexicans, 10 boomers, and 15 white women.

Good shit. I love shooting protests. Though I'm not from the US and never done anything this risky.
It feels like street photography on crack, there is always dozens of people wearing interesting outfits, holding interesting signs or doing something worth taking a shot off.
Hell on one of them I've met a dude who seems to drive out to every protest in the area and do a shoot.
Plus it's a nice way to show support for a cause you find important.

I can't decide if it would have been better panned a bit to the right so you could see the full text behind them or if it's even better that way if it's implied.
I love incorporating shit like roadsigns, graffiti, stickers and ads into my shoots when shooting at protests.
Also kinda fucked up how the grain makes this look so much more surreal, like it's something from the cold war

How was it shooting in such an environment? Could you have gone closer to the cops? Or take like a full body portrait of one?

I felt pretty safe most of the time except for a few times (I'll note them when I post the pics I guess). I could get very close when things were calm, I guess since I had a camera I might have been fine to get closer in some of the hectic moments but I definitely got muzzles of various nonlethal weapons flashed directly at me more than once and right next to another guy who was targeted with a beanbag gun.

I would estimate over 10,000 people came and went in the short 4-5 hours I was there, not including the folks who only protested at city hall.

I'll also add - it was a pretty fun atmosphere for most of the time I was there, with a few moments of heightened tensions around police movement. chatted with a few other photographers as well, there seemed to be a sizeable percentage of people who were there as much to protest as to take pictures of what I think everyone expected to be a potential spectacle.

As a small suggestion for the guard stance photo, get the feet in or cut higher (above the knee for ex), but in this case you want to get the rifle too so I would have included the feet in the frame

not sure what equally means here; at least one gwac ended up arrested that I saw, but i've also seen the video of the reporter being hit with the rubber bullet or whatever it was. I definitely couldn't have stood my ground and just taken pictures in the midst of an advance if that's what you're asking, but presumably some press photographers were able to do that because of their credentials.

moments after I thought "for sure i'm about to get tagged with a rubber bullet" I dunno what the guy did beyond not moving back fast enough but about 6 officers jumped on him and started wrestling him to the ground, and the rest turned to push us back to the end of the block, weapons raised.

But as a frog, let me say that those protests are pretty pathetic. Can't you do better, Burgers? Where is the C I N E M A you are know to deliver?
Here any random village of 3000 old boomer farts nobody could point on the map would produce more mayhem than that, just for a 10km/h speed limit reduction on the roads and the price of baguette going up 5 cents.

at this point they pushed everyone back at this intersection (they'd been slowly pushing folks down the street with noisemakers, several people yelled "tear gas!" but I don't think they actually deployed it in this push), but I realized it was the same cops from the other side so I went back to try my luck there

we've all seen the dramatic pictures of the burning waymos - this one got saved by the backline of cops as they pushed up from what I could tell. sadly I was already out of film by the time the waymos on the other side of the 101 got torched so I didn't get any of my own photos (though I did see a guy jump into one of their windshields and crack the shit out of it)

and that's all I've got. I loaded another roll but as I was doing it the cops were putting on their gas masks, and neither of us wanted to stick around for that. so we started walking away, only to then have the crowd start running behind us a minute or two later as the cops started the gassing. I guess still have a few more until image limit, maybe I'll post a few more miscellaneous shots to finish it out

Not a fan of the colours but very happy you don’t crop the feet anymore.
