I want to do something with my photos. 99% of all the pictures I've taken have never been seen by anyone but myself; they're just taking up space on my hard drive. Is Instagram still the usual choice for sharing photos? I know it's for normies, but other websites like Flickr or 500px are too obscure for most people to bother looking at them.

Flickr is far more popular than you might think. People use it for referencing gear, for finding stock shots, and sometimes to buy nice prints. If you tag and group your work properly, you can reach a good size audience. The sites just a little stuffy and poorly maintained. But a lot of people still use it.
Instagram and Tumblr are useful too. Even Twitter if you tag stuff right.

I'm in the same boat, OP.
After 12 years of snapshitting I finally made an Instagram account.
But only video "reels" get any visibility on there now, because they want to become tiktok. Pictures literally aren't shown in anyone's feed.
