/junkyards/
sup /p/
I've started a new project documenting junkyard and pick-n-pulls in my area! I went to one as a kid a bunch of years ago and ever since have been dying to go back. I find them really interesting, its an environment you really never get to experience. Its sort of surreal seeing all the old cars ripped apart, and having free reign to do basically whatever you want to them (as long as you pay) is sort of freeing? I'm also a big car nerd to its fun trying to find interesting cars or just seeing how they work.
Anyways, I intend to visit these places and document not only the environments but also the people. I think eventually I'd love to do portraits of the workers, especially with their tools. Last time I went I was too nervous to ask anyone so maybe if you have any tips on asking strangers, especially while theyre working, for photos that would be great.
I hope you enjoy these photos and maybe they will inspire you or something. If this isn't your thing, then just pass on by.
Thanks!

alright thats it.
I color-graded these pretty stylistically but I really like it. All photos were shot on Nikon D750 and my 50mm 1.8 af-s nikkor lens and a terrible 24-105 tamron af lens I got for $9, which is why there is so much vignetting on some of the wide shots.
As I shoot more, I intend to keep this thread updated.
If you're still here, thanks for looking at my thread and happy shooting!

Cool. If you really hate that lens just get a 24mm prime off ebay. Are you planning to print any of this? Also some of your horizons are crooked

I really like these pictures and your editing style. That lens with the horrible corners kinda helps it in a way. My criticism is that in a lot of these shots your just ever so slightly off from hitting your subject straight on or are angled slightly in an awkward way. The junkyard is basically a grid and a lot of these shots look like youre attempting to hit the subjects straight on but youre just barely off enough for it to be noticeable.

I would also consider cropping this or get closer and lower the camera so that the road is out of view, would add to the desolation by removing it and the cars.

Actually I cant tell if its your positioning or if your lens just has outrageous pin cushion distortion like here.

Thank you for the thread anon
I don't know if it's your editing but the wide shots are overblown as fuck, either you over exposed or you had too much fun with the highlights while editing

These are my favorites because it tells the junkyard without being too direct about it (also those are the ones where I see your interest in the subject)

These are great. The only thing I am not a fan of is the fake grain. Do you wish you'd used a film camera instead?

>>4440260
yea the wide shots are crazy overexposed. i think its the lenses fault. I should've brought it down in post. my bad.
>>4440138
i think again, its the lens. i tried to position the best i could.
>>4440134
thanks for the compliment and input!
>>4440101

Reminder that any non-exotic car worth owning has one of 4 names:
Alfa Romeo, Volvo, Jaguar, Mercedes Benz

I guess it's not entirely wrong since pretty much every Mercedes that matters is technically MOPAR

Rather drive a Jetta than a 'yoda, and I count Porsche as exotic.
>>4448381
It is, but if a car isn't RWD it's not worth having either.

Also nu Jaguar is LITERALLY mega gay.

The only newish one I'd bother with from your list is the Giulia (pre facelift). Mercedes died with the introduction of the W205, W212 and W221 facelift. We all know what pajeet Jaguar is like and Volvo died with the 960/S90.

I like photography of end of life/wrecked cars. The shapes are interesting. Good thread, thanks OP.

Consider large format film. Your subject matter is really well suited for a camera with both perspective control and focal plane manipulation.
The added resolution would be great for all the fine details in these shots.

Something else you could try that may be fun is to set up off camera strobes so you can get creative with lighting.

Overall I like them! Nice job.
