Is the true final endgame of gear just buying a second hand premium camera from 5-10 years ago?
Seems to be the best of everything
You get the function, power, resolution etc of modern tech, but the price is low

Yes, but D300 is not representative.
D300 is outdated junk.
D600/D610, D800/D800e/D810 are great.
D750 and D850 are also good, but still overpriced for what they are.
D7200 is also great, if you want APS-C in a "pro" format.

Not junk, but my D2x has superior resolution and color fidelity.It even creates good B&W.

Actually considering doing that to upgrade a bit from my d90. Thinking about the d7500, or making the step to a second z line like the z50.

I somewhat agree but doing this with Nikon is just stupid. The autofocus on all of these cameras are dogshit, and the colours very wildly from model to model. If you like shooting film and weird unrealistic colours don't bother you, and you're OK with using manual focus then sure go ahead.

Nearly all of my lenses are manual focus. But I don't have any issues with the autofocus performance of my D2x and D300s.

Nikon DSLR AF is excellent for a DSLR. The only thing better is a equivalent Canon.

D500s are expensive as fuck for what you get desu, nearly the same price as a refurb Canon R50.

Now if you were talking about Pentax, early Canon/Nikon mirrorless, or Fuji I'd agree.
