Did I waste my money getting an M43 camera instead of full frame? I got an EM1-III because it seemed to have everything I wanted, and the picture quality is good, but now reading more discussions on /p/ I wonder if the picture quality is actually bad and I can't see it, and if I should sell for full frame

if you're happy with the images it creates that's all that matters. /p/ is a rage storm of autism. Don't regard it

It's bad if you want to obsessively document every fine detail of a mundane object without a hint of artistic merit.
Because you're autistic.
If you're not autistic and don't care about sharpness when viewed at 400% zoom, but actually want to take photos that rely on good composition and interesting subject matter, it's just fine and dandy.

Funny joke, but literally every artist uses a medium format or full frame camera

that's because it's not about super sharpness. if you want super sharpness you buy a m43 macro lens, turn on pixel shift mode, and start scanning reality one square at a time. it's a deep center crop so it uses the sharpest part of the lens! if you're an artist it's about FEELING, and explaining the technological aspects that allow cameras to create feeling is totally beyond /p/ so i'll put make it easy

Bigger cameras soak up more reality
More tones
More smooth transitions
More shadows
More highlights
It's about the transition between in and out of focus
It's about getting the rendering of a 3 element lens with the sharpness of a 12 element lens because the image size/pixel size is bigger than the optical flaws
It's about the fact that human vision has a medium format like perspective

MFT (phone sensors) just aren't a good fit for art unless you want it to look trashy on purpose. m43 rendering looks like dull plastic shit and super sterile across the frame.

Yes
>On full frame?
Buy a hasselblad H3D-39II and forget "high ISOs", real art in color stops at 400, past that have fun in B&W.

>MFT (phone sensors)
mft is 3x bigger than phone sensors. Everyone knows a $15k hasselblad system is better. The point is OP doesn't need to acquire gear syndrome and get on a hedonic treadmill. He can make art right now with what he has and if he deems he needs something better then he can get something better.

>He can make art right now
Nope. Digital photography is literally not art. It's a trade. If he wanted to make art he should have bought a film camera and some darkroom supplies.

Real prints made from real photographs = works of art
Digital photos = disposable data
Micro four thirds "photos" = sterile rendering, lacking tonality, plasticky, harsh, no soul, only good for pixel peepers thats why their cameras are marketed with pixel shift and FPS gimmicks and the #1 selling point is "everything is always sharp all the time". Peak reality scanner.

Sell that shit and buy a mamiya m645 1000s with a sekor c 80mm f2.8. A REAL camera.

Then buy a cheaper one for doing scans (to determine which negatives are worth printing). Micro four thirds is just scanning equipment.

I feel worse for someone that thinks pressing a button is art. Do you think using chatGPT is art too?

Film photography is real photography and art. From the darkroom flows human expression, human soul.
Digital is only called photography because of the poverty of the english language. A better term is "machine vision".

if you wanna make art shoot 4x5 and do prints
if you want photos that actually look good buy a nikon zf and a 40mm f2

if you want reality scanning "picture of a ___" shot with "zoom to fill the frame" as the sole goal then stick with micro four thirds

stop huffing paint idiot, do you hear yourself? nobody gives a shit about your physical prints, today's world is digital, if Michelangelo had Instagram back in the day he would too post his shit there.
Pixels or brush strokes it doesn't matter, if the the artwork make you FEEL then it's art, if we apply your impotent logic as digital =/= art then everything song you heard and every movie you saw is fake and doesn't exist.

You talk about feel but how's these for feeling inducing?

Something actually made by human hands.
A real moment in time, immediately immortalized in a real physical medium

If that doesn't add to the feeling you have no soul. Digital slop is cheap, disposable, and could be AI generated. Digital photography just isn't important. Digital images are the computer generated backing track to the shitty pop song of consumerism and dopamine chasing.

To understand how the digital photographic process differs from traditional analog processes, you have to understand that digital images are an artificial facsimile whereas analog images are a direct capture of subject.
Anonymous
6/28/2025, 3:51:43 AM No.4440979
To understand that analog processes are an illusionary creation of the demonic sciences you must understand that our eyes are mirrors and the rods and cones in them simply interpret wavelengths of light and process them into images. The devil science of photographic film merely emulates that, you must look at things in person to see them, never view images or you will go to hell.

Photographers that care about the art almost always do use medium format or full frame, you're right.
But it's because they actually give a fuck about marginal improvements. It's what they live and breathe for, or make a living off of. So nothing other than the money in their bank account is going to stop them from spending 2x as much for a 20% perceptual improvement if you look very hard.
m43 is good for people who only give a fuck enough for getting 80% of the way there, to get some nice pictures of friends, pets, kids, whatever to put on their fridge. It's good for casuals that want to "get good" but not so good strangers will trust them to take nice photos of their weddings or to get their art into galleries. It's good for people who want an escape of working a day of retail hell and want to have a little fun in the park on a free afternoon with a little side hobby they can't afford to put much money into.

The only casuals it's not good for are autistic fucks who give a shit more about pixel-perfect representation of a wind turbine, than they ever could about a street photo that evokes an emotional response.
