How often do you buy a new camera? How many cameras do you own? What’s the reason to own more than 3?

New as in fresh out of the box? No idea when I last bought a new camera.

New as in "new to me." I probably I pick up one every week or so. I'm a thrift junkie and collecting addict. I'm fascinated by all the sizes, shapes, designs and features of P&S cameras. Have dozens if not over a hundred. If I was into guns I'd be one of those people you read about sometimes, "police enter area man's home to find 5000 firearms."

we reached the limits of sensor tech the same way film did in the 90s and the only thing that matters is lens and skill now. cameras are just interchangeable and never need upgraded unless they break

I have used the same D800 since 2013, but I have bought a D600 as a backup for event shoots.
I also have an F65 and an F80, just because it's fun to shoot film sometimes.

Digital? Rarely. Just own a mirrorles and a griii and that’s it. There’s no reason to have multiple beyond that.
Film? Yeah all the time, don’t have an offhand count but at least a dozen now. Totally different story with film, they’re cheap and provide a different user experience when shooting. Shooting a canosnoykon is essentially all the same at the end of the day. Shooting a Pentax 6x7, an m3, a gx680, an eos 1, and so on you get the idea, is noticeably a different way of shooting and that’s half the fun for me.

Only buy used & always sell before buying. Once every 1 or 2 years.

If you put effort into it, you can even "trade up".

not often, almost never in fact
> How many cameras do you own?
18 I think
>What’s the reason to own more than 3?
two SLRs so one can have B&W and one color, or one negative and one slide for example
one DSLR for paid work (this is the only one I've actually bought in the past year)
small P&S to take with me
the others were free that I found, some are broken, some worked to begin with, some I kinda fixed up
also fun

I cycle through cameras every year because GAS.
My current cameras are Pentax K1ii, Pentax KF, and Sigma SD1 Merrill. I think I've found my groove and I'll probably get a Pentax K3iii, upgrade when (if) there's any future versions of these cameras. I'll get back into L mount if I can ever afford a Leica SL3, and get an fp L again. I won't give up my DSLRs.
What I've learned is that cameras matter, but not in the way most here will claim.
Specs don't mean shit outside of niche uses. My SD1 Merrill has taken some of my favorite nighttime street photos despite being unusable above ISO 400, or ISO 800 in B&W.
What does matter is camera ergonomics, design, and usability. I don't want to be fumbling around with a shitty menu system on the street because I forgot to turn off high-res mode when I was doing some landscapes the other day, or fumbling with a sloppy Q-menu to change my exposure mode or AF settings.
This is what Pentax does right more than any other brand.

>Pentax K1ii
What's your experience with this been like? I've been using a Pentax K10D for the past seven years and, even though I bought a Sony a7ii about five years ago, I still enjoy using the Pentax more. I like the character of its images and the weather sealing is a nice plus too. I just recently found out about their K1 line and I was thinking about buying a used K1. I don't know if it'd be worth it considering I've got the a7ii. Would a K1 be a meaningful upgrade from the a7ii in your opinion? or at least a camera with significantly different features?

I really like it.
But the only genres I really care about are street photography and its tangents, and portraiture and in-studio stuff which is where I make some extra cash. I do wildlife very casually and almost never sports.
The K1ii, D850, and Sigma fp are the three cameras I've had that ended up feeling like an extension of my body -- not having to think about how to use them in order to achieve the results that I want. (Every Sony and Panasonic camera I've used has failed at this miserably).
Pentax, I think, has really dialed in making an ergonomic and usable camera. Pentax cares a lot more about "the photographic experience" rather than making cameras that compete on specs, and it shows. Sigma often gets called "The Japanese Leica," but that title should really rather go to Pentax.
The specs are good where it matters -- image quality is top notch. AF is about on par with the D810, so it's competent. The K3iii is what you'd wanna get if AF is important to you, though. Features like astrotracer and AA simulator aren't always useful, but they're more than gimmicks. They're very useful when they make sense to use. Pixel Shift Resolution is a nice alternative to how other brands do it, rather than just making huge megapixel files, you instead get foveon-style resolution (full color depth in each pixel, no interpolation between pixels), better tonality and dynamic range. It's more subtle though.
The lenses are a huge part where Pentax pulls ahead. While Pentax has "modern" mtf-chasing lenses, their Limited series are plainly special in the way they really do have very aesthetic rendering and capable of sharp, micro-contrasty images, like AF-capable Voigtlander lenses at half the cost.

Not a single Hindi has ever made anything of artistic merit in human history. Buddhism is the only good thing that came out of India and the unification of hinduism as a religion destroyed India completely, fuckin brits

Should you switch to a Pentax system? Hard call. It's easy to recommend a K-70 to a newb because of the great value those cameras provide. Buying a K1/ii and trading out of your current system is a much bigger ask, though.
It might be worthwhile if you prefer Pentax's focus on "the photographic experience", or are the kind of person that like the idea of Leica but doesn't like Leica prices.
You've also gotta see the value of a DSLR I think. There are reasons to prefer DSLR -- I find having an OVF helps my creative process. Not everyone will feel the same way and many see EVF's as the one true path of the future. A lot of people can't get over the fact that DSLR's realistically can't focus on single eyelashes for super-shallow-DoF-sportrs-photos. I couldn't give a shit less about that.

Also consider the K3iii. Unlike a lot of other brands, Pentax doesn't consider FF to be premium and APS-C to be budget. For most of its DSLR history, Pentax was APS-C only like Fujifilm. With the K1 and the K3iii, Pentax started suggesting that the K3iii was its high-end camera meant for wildlife, sports, action, and other such shooters, who'll benefit from a faster crop sensor and better AF performance (with eye tracking!) and high fps, while the K1 was the high-end camera meant for wedding, studio, landscape, etc. type shooters, who'll benefit from greater dynamic range, tonality, shallow depth of field, etc.

At peak was 1-2 a year because it was profitable, then maybe 1 every other year and it's been almost 2 years since last pickup (Zf). Will probably pickup another within a year, but definitely selling at least one
I own 6 that I use on a regular basis. I'm fortunate enough that I don't really need to sell for an upgrade anymore, but I think this year will be when the downsizing starts for real.
>Two of the bodies I've kept largely out of nostalgia and fun. Both get used as my super beaters since I wont really care when they rip. Too BGN grade to bother with the hassle of selling.
>One is kind of niche in function, but also has a lot of sentimental value. Usually my everyday carry and often finds its way onto photo work stuff.
>One is mostly a video / hybrid workhorse for work stuff, and home videos.
>One is just a solid stills workhorse with some extra fun. Primary camera now for work stuff.
>One is just like the above but a little smaller / worse. Selling it soon.
I always will bring 3 when working, two for me, one for something a bit different or for my partner to use. Usually bring two for trips and vacations.

My local shop is doing a trade in event next month, and planning to get rid of that last body and at least 6 lenses.
