Flashes archaic bullshit
I have these two older flashes. Neither work.

Minolta was thrifted without testing for like $10.

277T speedlite came with an old Canon T70 I received as a hand-me-down.

Do these older flashes just die? Feel like I've tried most of the usual hacks to get it back. Left it on for a few hours to recharge capacitors, cleaned the contacts. Opened up the Minolta and thought I was gonna die from discharge so closed it right back up.

Minolta charges up and makes sound but never fires, 277T doesn't even charge up.

Any other hairbrained ideas to get these working?

get a soldering iron, a multimeter and knowledge of electronics. It's a lot of work that's why nobody is repairing $10 flashes

capacitors from that era are notorious for going bad, you see it in computers, old tvs, old game consoles, etc. perhaps that's the issue?
Anonymous No.4443101 [Report]
Buying an untested old flash is something I would avoid. I buy and sell lots of camera gear and 50% of the time they are not functional due to exploded batteries and whatnot and those that do work usually need some work and cleaning before becoming operational.

In my experience it's more so the little capacitors that get issues. The capacitors that charge the bulb in flashes are huge. I've never actually had a camera that failed because of a bad cap. I've fixed a couple flashes but they've all been articulated ones that went bad because wires got tugged the wrong way and needed to be reconnected, so not much help for the ones OP showed.

If you've got a camera that allows the flash to tilt up (most sony compacts for example) then they actually make for fantastic bounce flashes indoors when you just need a bit extra light.

Behold, the only reason to use micro four thirds

For some fucking retarded reason no one else had the bright idea of powering a tilt/swivel mini flash from the camera battery. Not even sony with their modular compact line, despite doing the video microphone version of this.

You can't use this to up your a7c's family snapshit/street potential. You'd need a bulkier flash like a tt350 or a poorly made piece of overpriced chinkshit like the flashq instead.

Yeah, good luck with that going foward. The compact cameras that actually benefit from a compact flash don't support it.

lol, HSS is 100x more useful on a compact style flash
Just get one of these then, $40, USB-C, built-in wireless / off-camera usage

I actually had to look this thing up since you seem so enthralled by it for some reason, and that lolympus toy only has a guide number of 9m. Compare that to the A6000's built in flash which is 6m (can tilt, no swivel), or a relatively compact 3rd party flash like the Nissin i40 which is 40m and you'll understand why lolympus was the only one to offer something like that. Sure it has swivel, but it's still only a glorified on camera flash that takes up significantly more space than a built in flash.

Looking through the options in the thread the Medalight F2 Mini seems significantly more useful than the lolympus toy since the flash can be detached from the base and used wirelessly, although the downside is lack of TTL. Sure it's still a toy like the lolympus with only GN10, but at least it's only like $40.

And now that I'm remembering, that Medalight F2 Mini seems perfect for the people that want to larp as street photogs, specifcially the ones that used film cameras with wired flash extensions.

Now why this Andreas dipshit suddenly be shopping for a very specific Olympus flash when all his browsed lenses are Snoy? I know you're definitely lurking here at minimum, if not shitposting as well.

Does this have even a single practical advantage over a good speedlite and a softbox?

Apart from looking like le cool 'tog?
Harder light than a softbox, slightly softer and more even light than a fresnel. In other words, practically useless.

Dogs are terrified of flash. They might seem tolerant and non-reactive but it's a negative stimulus and flashing a dog is unknowingly training it not to do the thing.

t. ruined a "flash tolerant" dog flashing it while it was playing with certain toys

Flash photography is also a nuisance in general and the vast majority of people would gladly opt to avoid it.

Amazing dubs. I get what you’re saying, I’m mainly looking forward it so I could use it during night-outs. Form factor is also ideal since regular speedlites are way too big for my taste when it comes to regular shooting… for paid gigs, yeah they work but I’d feel like an idiot carrying one while trying to shoot street n whatnot, not to mention the extra weight (600EX-II owner). It’s nice to have the option.
