I'm a probationary firefighter/AEMT. I'm paid by the hour. And I'm even paid to sleep and play video games after 5 pm. (Obviously when I'm not responding to emergencies)
Would I do it for free? Yeah. But I'm not going to sit around the station for free. I'd have to have a real job. And then when there's an emergency, you'd have to wait for me to get to the station, and then wait until everyone else got there, and then we'd all drive out to help you, probably with far less skill and competence because we'd train less (we train one medical and one fire scenario every shift)
So your house would probably burn down before we got there, and you'd probably die or get a IO because none of us would be good enough to start an IV on someone in shock.

I work f/t as a FF in a metropolitan hellscape and volunteer for a county in Ontario and p/t as an ACP medic for a county mom and pop service.
Starting off as a volunteer varies anywhere from like $15-$35 and varies on experience.

The way it's done in the states is absolutely alien to me and i can't fathom or understand it for the life of me.
Here I work 7-10 days a month 24 hour shifts and the days I'm not working usually I'm working a 12 hour shift as a medic or helping my buddies do construction/reno jobs.

Due to political pressure and the law suit they allowed he to join but eventually she ended up injuring herself and some other firefighter and she sued the city again and they paid out and the towns people were pissed lol

That’s dual role EMS for you. You can either be good at fire science or good at medical, not both. Every fire medic I’ve worked with only went the medical route to get into fire, and all have been overly aggressive with treatment at best or incredibly incompetent at worse. This culture of pushing for fire to be dual role needs to fucking stop, but it won’t because it’s easier for the people to support their tax dollars going to expensive fucking engines that rarely get used over actually equipping and staffing a public ambulance service instead.

Actuall firefighter fag here. There are roughly three models for firedepartment compensation.
1. Career departments - these are what most people think of. Big cities, crews living on station for 48 or 72 hour shifts. They are paid salary with overtime opportunities.
2. Volunteer - these are 80% or more of firefighters in America. They can either do it for free OR pay-per-call where they are payed an hourly rate for any calls they make. Usually there is no one living at the station and responders respond from their homes. Monthly training and meetings are typically not paid events.
3. A combination department where some staff is career and are supplemented by volunteers.
Happy to answer questions for you fucks.

You probably make more as a mechanic honestly unless you’re in a bigger city. Firefighters do normally get great benefits and pensions though. Keep in mind you will be aged out at a certain point so if you are pushing closer to 40 you likely won’t get in. And a lot of services you’ll be “encouraged” to get a medical cert either during your probation or to even be considered if it’s a competitive service.

What they don't tell you is the vast majority of "volunteers" are convicts who do it for a pittance on their books and some outside time.
Even funnier than that is firefighting as a profession requires being "of good moral standing" which excludes being an ex-con. So these "volunteers" are forbidden from joining the fire department after they're released from prison.

So Florida is a special case. Most of their 911 medical service is through fire, so you will almost be guaranteed to need your EMT as a minimum wage to get in. Getting your firefighter 1 and 2 is relatively easy, I’ve seen some complete idiots get it. The EMT is a whole different beast. You’re young enough and if you have a side hustle that’s great. Some fire services can mandate you to work hours after your shift or come in early, so I would make sure you read the fine print on that before you jump on board. Could be worth looking into at least, but unless you’re moderately intelligent and willing to learn some medical shit that EMT is a roadblock for a lot of people.

EMS gets paid shit because we have no union and there’s so many young people fresh out of high school that se they can be a hero for three months of school and jump for it. The issue now though is while EMTs aren’t hard to find advanced emergency medical is. Why go to school for the same time as an RN when you make almost half of what they make, and run harder? Yeah we get the autonomy but that can only carry you so far and burnout is real. Most medics end up transitioning out or doing contract work (like me, I work offshore rigs now). So the problem won’t be fixing itself anytime soon, especially since emergency medical is mostly done as a private agency and not a public service. I don’t give a shit about someone wanting to volunteer for EMS work, I just think you’re kinda dumb for doing it for free.

Having experienced my fair share of well involved fires with entrapment, a 300 pound FF hauling an obviously expired 300 pound person over some burnt out joists equates to 600 pounds of dead weight in a cellar with two feet of water you have to work on getting out. Over the last few years, they've been rather hasty in dropping evac tones and cutting off the gloryhounds.

Just don’t. Talk to other medics, you’ll hear the same. When I finished EMT class I asked the instructor, who also taught AEMT if I should go for advanced or straight medic. Even he said just go medic. You’ll feel gimped and handcuffed if you go advanced. Can’t give Benzos for seizures, can’t use the cardiac monitor outside of transmitting and AED mode. Only supraglottic intubations, no narcs. It will suck and you’ll be kicking yourself for not going straight through. Do EMT for awhile and if you enjoy it go straight medic, you’ll thank me later.

I do four week rotations 28 days straight and then a month home. 30 an hour so I make 40 hours straight time and 44 hours over time each week. A little over 12 grand a rotation and then I’m home for a month and can choose to pick up with my local service if I want some excitement.

Especially when you compare to how I’d run for 19-20 hours out of a 24 and come home with 7 tripsheets to do while I’m off before I have to come back in and do it again in two days. It absolutely beats during 911 for a living. There’s a reason the EMS attrition rate is around 7 years

On one hand I don’t want to give it away because there aren’t a huge amount of jobs and I gobble these contracts up. That said I’m always willing to help a fellow EMS brother out.

Offshore Medic, or Rig medic. You can find them on indeed or job boards. The issue is you need to be National registry if you’re US, not sure what the equivalent is in Canada - but you need to be able to operate under your full scope, and able to get reciprocity for the state you’re based out of (many of these jobs are based out of Louisiana. They often want a course called BOSIET/HUET which is about two grand if you pay for it on your own. Five years experience, ACLS of course and many also want you to get a TWIC or a mariners card. Not sure if it’s the same in Canada but it is a physical where the e physician says you are healthy enough to go offshore. Having courses and certs in Helicopter Landing Officer or HSE helps big time but most of those can be done online.
Being Nationally registered and having BOSIET/HUET are big limiting factors. The biggest is that most of these jobs say Prior offshore experience requires. You can get around this by doing remote contracts in austere locations, but they won’t take the average ditch doctor fresh off the streets without some of those extra certs under your belt. Best of luck my Canadian bretheren
