I can only speak on being Muslim in a western country. I am not Muslim myself, in fact I am as far from that as possible as I am a Jew, but I've had Muslim friends for a long time now. One of their fathers even runs the store my mom does part time work at.

In the west, the Muslim community is incredibly tight knit and oriented around mosques and the occasional Islamic Center if the city has several mosques. They constantly speak about what's called the "ummah" or "Muslim Community as a collective whole" and, ironic coming from me, a rather transactional approach to religion. Well of course. I'm not at all a religous person, but if you use religion as your northstar to keep your beliefs within a certain principled range and it guides you to a better life, I 100% endorse using it. I just see it as taking the good with the bad. The good things about the religion are the women are kept pure. Charity amongst muslims is heavily encouraged they treat eachother well and have a good strong sense of community. I don't find their views on women backwards at all, they covet their females more than us north americans do.
