The military has seperate branches and is controlled by both Congress and the president basically equally.
No one man controls the military to control the rest of the government without creating civil war, and controlling the USA with it's own military is going to be extremely difficult due to the cultural nature of Americans.
Yes, democracies can collapse to authoritarian power grabbing, but democracies and societies have momentum that cannot be stopped by just one man, you have to first commit to decades of undermining the very concept of democracy, and then undermine all of the backup powers within the government (They can vote you out of power) and states and individuals willing to arm against you.

It's never as easy as "control military and win", the population has to be not bothered by the loss of of governance first that they don't fight for it.
