1. You roll the cone first. For that, you need a properly conic roach. If it's wonky, so will the joint be
2. Once you have that, you make a cone, and make sure it's not twisted. But you only close it (lick on the joint paper) at the bottom, where the roach is.
3. You ROAST your tobacco properly (if you use that). You roast it till it gets darker and crispy dry, and then you mix it with the weed, carefully, so you don't crumble the tobacco too much.
4. You fill up the joint about 1/3, and then you stomp it a bit so it gets packed - but don't stomp it with a pencil. Just let nature take care of it.
5. You touch your tongue with your finger, to get a slight bit of spit on it, and then you carefully close the joint with the spit from the outside, where the glue is.
6. Next third of the mix in, stomp, do the same with the finger and a tiny amount of spit.
7. Last mix in. Stop some more, close the last of the joint, and then let the glue dry up for a min, and then you can take a cig or a pencil and stomp it a bit from the top, and then you can light it up, or close it off for later use.

You can literally roll perfect joints with this technique, and it's quite fool proof. Also tastes better because of the roasted tobacco. And don't worry about the dryness of the joint. Once you light it up, the ember will hold it in place. Smoke more gently on it, cause it has more drag.

Also remember to make the mouth piece of the cone about the same size as a cig, or maybe even slightly bigger. It'll make you more high. The only way THC can enter your bloodstream, is via oxygen. Bigger roach = more oxygen = more high. Also works with bongs and everything else, for obvious reasons, but stopped smoking that many years ago.
