By what metric? There's no field of math that's superior to another and there's performative math as well like 'pure mathematics'. Math is instrumental, it has a particular application. Euler's formulas don't work in theoretical fields of math, but any engineer will tell you that they live and breathe Euler.

This guy was an exceptionally talented prodigy, yet he accomplished absolutely nothing with his ability in math. Even Ted Kaczynski forgot how to do all of the theoretical math when he went off the grid. Math isn't racehorses competing it's supposed to be establishing systems that can measure and predict the physical world. Nearly every invention that made the information age has been the result of solid state physicists and engineers working in tandem. If it was just the physicists, like say Claude Shannon, he's absolutely brilliant but would have been utterly useless without his engineering team that tested his ideas out. You NEED live testing, nothing exists purely in theory.

MIT has teachers that are mostly from New England, because that's where the University is. Teaching doesn't necessarily mean you're good at something they're not going to import staff to train people on giving introductory courses when all of the interest is on research.
