Around 2014-16 and the paradigm shift killed it. They lost the "down to earth rationalist" aesthetic, since a lot of down turned out to be extremely progressive and their view's were even crazier than that of the average creationist. Also the decline of religion didn't bring in an egalitarian liberal utopia, the West just became degenerate and declined on all fronts. Atheism wasn't just for its own sake, there was an underlying philosophy behind it that made it seem like it was a good idea. This philosophy could be summed up as saying. "the more true things about the world that we believe the more moral and the better of the world will become." as it actually turns out human beings need fake stories to stay sane, stay united and to be spiritually healthy. If there is a God or if there is a heaven great, but human beings need the story to be united and face the world. Simply believe in things that are true, which are usually nihilistic and uncomfortable isn't good enough.
