if the average woman bore 2 children at the age of 20, (which would need to be 2.2 in practice to compensate for disease and such), and the average lifespan were 80 years, then the average female age would be 40. A modestly higher birth rate like 2.5 would lower the average age substantially, but the important part is that if the grandmother is in her 40s instead of her 60s, then you have two working generations of parents instead of one.
