Vietnam was nothing like Afghanistan. Congress forbade actually defeating the North Vietnamese because of fear it would cause an escalation with China and/or the USSR, who were the backers for the North Vietnam regime. They couldn't beat the Americans in battle, and had to wait for us to leave the country due to political pressure at home.

So basically the same thing in Afghanistan. Taliban were badly beaten every time they fought the US military directly, so they learned to hide. It took a lot longer for them to outlast the US than the Vietnamese, because the US media sort of forgot about the Afghan War since the rate of casualties was so low it was a rounding error.
