That's just a meme.
Mine cost $2500 but lasted a decade before the battery turned into a bomb and the keyboard started going out despite being used several hours almost every day.
People who can afford that (professionals) can afford to "upgrade" every few years.

The lines that came out a few years after mine were a bit shittier (when they removed all the ports and added the touch bar).
Apple has its good and bad years.
But planned obsolescence was never as much of an issue as Apple making dumbass decisions.

But ive cut off everything that spies on me already, upgrading it would break all that and would also tank usability and features. So no, fuck you, not upgrading, dont give a fuck about "safety" features or "updates". Going to use 10 until important shit I use COMPLETELY stops working on it (and considering how much people hate 11, theres always going to be unofficial patches to make shit keep working on it just like there is for all the older versions of windows).

I keep seeing people expecting SteamOS to officially come to desktops, but AFAIK there are no plans for that.
And there's also no particular reason for it.
If you want the same experience, just install an Arch Linux distro which is what SteamOS moved to after Debian.
SteamOS has no special magic that people seem to imagine it does.
It's mostly just Valve's Arch Linux configuration.

wouldn't linux that has the a huge company behind it just workβ„’?
i tried linux mint years ago but it was a horrible experience due to losing the dualboot windows launch option because of corrupted MBR or something then discovering my exact printer model has no linux drivers and finally discovering my hard disk has a file type that linux can't read because it's proprietary or something. i believe it was NTFS.
later, i was told those things have work arounds but i'm too retarded to find them and too scared to jump in again.
maybe when i have the money for a new SSD and a bigger hard disk to move my stuff to i'll try linux again.

Anon, it's very simple.
Try to see it from the normie perspective.
Who do they go to when apt upgrade breaks their install of arch or mint or ubuntu? They don't know.
Who do they go to when it breaks on SteamOS? Gaben. And it won't break because despite their bleeding edge implementations, they do the bugfixing before it hits the Deck, rather than dropping the payload and waiting to see which installs sink and swim.

Normies are scared of this shit.
It's the fear of fucking up and destroying their computer that's keeping them on Windows.
The main reason that Linux never took off like Windows did, is that the gurus have a "go fix your own problem n00b" attitude when what normie customers want is to be taken care of.
There are so many people pissed off at Microsoft and Windows, that they gave Linux a chance, and the coders among them went to work on making Linux gaming a reality.
After 10-15 years of effort they got it done, with help from Valve.
Now gamers are seeing 15-20% performance gaps where SteamOS on a desktop performs better than Windows. It's 15-20% ahead of Windows.
Others benched Bazzite (which despite yourubers' efforts to misrepresent it isn't steam deck os and never will be) and bare arch with drivers & Proton, and Debian, and Ubuntu, and Mint, and found the same benefits.
Proton is a Godsend.
And just as importantly, the frame delivery is smoother than on Windows, so the games don't just run faster, they don't stutter as much.

But customers still get scared.
Who's gonna fix what they break? Valve. That's what they want.

The issue isn't some imaginary timer running out, the issue is that no more security updates means any exploit or vulnerability found after that date will never be fixed and will steadily work its way into every malicious host connection on the internet.
This is the sort of shit that screws over hospitals and civic admin running all their databases on old PC98 machines and obviously there will be enough hardcore W10 holdouts to make them an attractive target

Agreed. I hate how everyone banks on Windows. I mean, I know why they do, but fuck Windows. Linux is far superior. I like my Mac, but it's still somewhat limited.

>Who's gonna fix what they break? Valve. That's what they want.
Maybe they will, but right now SteamOS is just Arch Linux with delayed updates and a coat of paint.
If it's just used for Steam games, it's stable enough.
But arch is definitely not a normie desktop distro, and I don't think Valve has any plans to branch out right now anyway as there are already 3-4 solid offerings in that space, including distros like Manjaro that delay updates by a couple of weeks.

>i tried linux mint years ago but it was a horrible experience due to losing the dualboot windows launch option because of corrupted MBR or something then discovering my exact printer model has no linux drivers
Even today, dualbooting is not recommended for that reason.
Printer drivers are still terrible, but anything with IPP should work.

I've been maindriving Linux Mint for about a year without too many issues.
If people want a Linux that works, they can just install whatever distro as they are mostly in line.
Wine/Proton are open source, so Valve's contributions are available everywhere.
That's what I mean when I say people have a fundamental misunderstanding of what SteamOS desktop would be and are waiting for something that already exists.

yeah but having those things preinstalled is great for those of us that are not techy enough.
getting shit to work for the first time is a hassle.

i should since i'm already used to its issues and how it works but i hate contributing to the number of active users of bill's shitware.

Metro was great on a phone - Windows Phone, from which the bastard offspring Metro sprung, was actual neatshit. BUT it's still a touch based interface that had no real business being default in Win8. To say nothing of going full fucking retard and lumbering Server 2012 with the shit. And that's how to get everyone very happy never to hear nor speak of Metro again, irrespective it's (undeniable) good qualities in part.

i had this issue in a laptop that had a HDD like anon >>507481347 is saying.
there are several workarounds. you'll need to disable several background services for the disk usage to drop.
the one that worked for me was windows defender.

Literally had to just swallow the cum and become an iFag.

Windows is an unmitigated pile of bugged-out shit and most of the PC OEMs make retardedly designed laptops, Lenovo has some good shit, but then there's the problem that most Linux distros are maintained by literal furry hyper-pedo worst of the worst tranny abominations and it metaphysically affects your computer –the community is worse than any globohomo megacorp could ever wish to be.

The reason I chose a macbook pro book was primarily based off a few considerations…

My ideal laptop should be… (which doesn't exist)
>15-17”, 3:2 or 16:10
>OLED with matte or highly good AR
>99wh battery
>integrated graphics w/no dGPU (SoC is an okay compromise)
>haptic trackpad
>NO-NumberPad
>upward firing speakers

Because I'm not an accountant, engineer, or some dude who needs a numberpad, and I primarily just extensively browse the web, write essays, and do light photo and audio editing, I don't need gaming laptop tier power, but instead want good battery life and I want my computer to have a good screen, good onboard audio, good trackpad, and a centered keyboard.
Also the new macbooks offer nanotexture matte screens which work super well in high light environments…2026 macbooks are also set to get OLED finally.

Linux get dogshit battery life because it's hard to optimize for every hardware combination from all the various different laptop manufacturers, and even if you use tools like powertop, htop, or opensource intel/nvidia power drivers, and tweak the fuck out of shit, you get maybe like an extra 10%.
On windows my older dell got like 9h on windows and 4-5h on Arch, Mint, Fedora, Ubuntu, and OpenMandriva.
Apple on the other hand controls all the hardware and software, so can hyper-optimize to get the most out of the hardware, and is now even making their own Wifi/bluetooth chips and 5g modems, so will get even more efficiency in the years to come.
