It's retarded for a few reasons. To start pagans didn't really have a monetary system they did barter trade for services, most vehemently refused money because they had no use for it and nothing they wanted to trade for. Only the really backwards ones wanted shiny beads, statues, or mirrors. Essentially the only thing that could convert them was force or art. Which leads to the next layer of retardation which is Catholics removing art. Catholics weren't iconoclastic, but Protestants were. A crusader would have destroyed idols, but they also would allow some idols that people could venerate as saints. Saint Brigid comes to mind. Protestants on the other hand was basically Christian Islam where they destroyed all images and expect you to follow the bible to the letter, they didn't care what language you did it in, but they wanted to force everyone to be literate.
