Just looked online where I am at in Canada and pay for entry level jobs ranges from $18-$25 cad ($13-$18.50 USD). Anything above $25/hr cad ($18.50 USD) requires you be skilled at something with years of experience.

Homes here cost ~$300k cad ($220k USD) for 1 bedroom apartment units, ~600k ($440k USD) for town homes and 1 million ($730k USD) for stand alone houses. Rent seems to be cheaper than your situation though, only ~$1,000 cad ($730 USD) a month for a 1 bedroom cube, at $20/hr it is easy to pay the $1,000 a month. $3,600 a month but after taxes is $2,700 a month, after car insurance+gas and phone and internet bills that’s another $600 and food you are looking at least $500 a month for very basic food (food is expensive here). So now you are down to $1,600.00 and now minus $1,000 for rent and you have $600 net each month you get to keep.

So yeah modern slavery still
