They're expected to have around 2,000 or so missiles. ~80% of these are being intercepted outright and most of the rest are landing in places where they aren't doing much damage because they're only accurate within a few hundred meters of the intended target at most.

The "it's old stock" is straight up copium. All of us were sold this vision that drones and missiles were a hard counter to the West's reliance on air power. Yet here we are after three days and we've yet to see a single piece of Israeli hardware hit. Objectively the fight has been one sided and its retarded to pretend Iran is somewhat restraining itself when clearly they are struggling to mount a militarily meaningful response.

on other hand it also shows that if they get nukes those "isolated incidents" where warhead reaches its target are totally unacceptable -if those were nuke tipped there would be no Israel to speak of today...
demonstrating that Iran plays hardball - if Israel backs down and lets Iran build its nukes its game over.

Nothing essential for the military to function in Iran will ever be above ground.
Their command structure has dozens of pre-planned contingencies with entire lines of replacements in case of assassination because it's what they've been dealing with since forever.
israelies themselves admitted the strikes to the nuclear facilities did fuck all.

I just don't think that's plausible. Maybe you're right, but it's hard to imagine what they're keeping their powder dry for if not right here and now. I really think the regime is pretty tapped, especially considering so much of their war planning revolves around their proxies, which have been neutered since Oct 7th. Hamas, Hezb, Assad, are all gone, and the Houthis are basically impotent at the moment.

Iran always plays the longest possible game but the fact that they're now fully committed to a war means they're prepared and confident in a conflict against the US, not just a limited exchange against israel.
If they were tapped they'd simply take it on the chin and accept to give up enrichment but survive to fight another day.
Decisions like this are years in the making and Iranians are the farthest thing from impulsive in spite of all the bravado in their media.
This isn't just a simple reaction to israel provocation, it's a path they decided to take after weighing thousands of factors.

Unlike the US/Israel, Iran barely has any satellites and doesn't have the keys to vendor-installed back doors into common electronics. So obviously they don't have the same ISR capabilities.

>vision that drones and missiles are a counter to air power
Ballistic missiles are a "counter" to enemy air power in the sense that they can be used to disable enemy runways for a few hours, giving your own air force an advantage for a few hours while the enemy air force is forced to scatter to distant alternate runways. Iran doesn't have an air force to speak of, only a few museum pieces, so they have no means of a follow-up attack after a ballistic missile attack. Even if Iran wasted thousands of missiles to disable every air base in Israel it wouldn't matter because the Israelis would just base their aircraft in Cyprus or Jordan until Israeli airbases had been repaired.

Iran's ballistic missiles are only good as a counter-value deterrent. They couldn't disable Israel's air force except temporarily even if they tried. And the only way to cost-effectively inflict large scale counter-value damage with long range ballistic missiles is by mounting a nuclear warhead on them.

There is no reason to think Iran would sustain missile barrages with the same intensity forever. Iran doesn't have unlimited missiles. They obviously had to put on a serious fireworks initially in order to restore morale, but they obviously can't keep that up forever.

The way the Iranians can escalate is not by launching more missiles, but by targeting more valuable objects such as, for example, power plants, refineries or gas rigs, rather than symbolic targets such as an already-evacuated HaKirya. To escalate even further, they would build nukes and put nukes on the missiles they launch.

Not anymore. The Iron Dome made Hezbollah rather useless, while at the same time Iranian advances in missile technology and production made Iranian long range missiles precise and plentiful enough to be a viable alternative to Hezbollah's short range rockets

Assad's only value to Iran was to provide a supply line to Hezbollah.

Even if Iran spent its entire military budget on air force R&D and procurement, they could never match Israel + allies air force. Israel is allowed to buy planes from the US, in fact they get a multi billion gift card each with which to buy US stuff. Israel is also allowed to shop around and tap the global supply chain for parts with which to build its domestic weapons, Iran is not. Finally, Israel has the US & co air force on stand by to provide aid if necessary, in fact they are doing so right now by helping intercept munitions fired from Iran. So for Iran there's no point in trying to go the air force route. They have to respond asymmetrically.

A counter-value deterrent based on long-range missiles is a perfectly viable military strategy, if you have a clear pathway to equip the missiles with nuclear warheads. That gives you a worthy response at the higher rungs on the escalation ladder.

How tf would Hezbollah be able to do anything in that regard? Even if Iron Dome wasn't as effective, Hezbollah still wouldn't be able to do much because Israel's most important air bases are in the Negev desert in the south

>The fact of the matter is Israel attacked not because Iran was close to a bomb, but because it has never been more isolated and weak.
I think the situation is the complete opposite. Israel knows that time is against them and they have to act now to achieve a decisive victory, exactly because Iran is becoming less isolated and Israel is becoming more isolated. Israeli antics in Gaza killed the prospective anti-Iran Arab-Israeli alliance. Israel's main overseas benefactor the US is a power in relative decline. The US will soon no longer have monopolistic control over advanced aircraft and missiles. Countries are becoming bolder and bolder in ignoring US sanctions on Iran. In October the last UN sanctions on Iran will expire and there is zero chance that they will be renewed.

I think Iran doesn't want to build nukes because of the diplomatic ramifications of doing so, but they want to have the ability to build nukes if it turns out they need them (it turned out they do need them). Hence they made themselves a nuclear threshold state rather than a nuclear state.

I think what Iran wanted even more was a general rapprochement with the US & co that would have made nukes unnecessary and improved the economy, and the JCPOA would have enabled that, but it turns out the US Republican party will not accept anything less than the destruction of Iran.

If I'm in the Iranian war room (before it was blown up) my best deterrence is being able to threaten Israel with ballistics while Hamas, Hezb, Houthis, and Syrian Shiite militias go jihad. Israel is under a lot less stress under the current situation because all the proxies are already dealt with, so the only pain is these ballistic missile attacks instead of another intifada.

The Israeli resource to deal with another intifada is the ground army, also a resource that has nothing to do with Iranian missiles.

>while Hamas, Hezb, Houthis, and Syrian Shiite militias go jihad
Not sure what you mean by that. The only effective offensive weapon these militias have is rockets. They are infantry militias and so would get massacred by Israeli tanks and helicopters if they tried a ground offensive (except for perhaps some brief tactical success if the Israelis are sleeping on the job like on Oct 7, 2023). And as we've seen, nowadays not even these rockets are particularly effective anymore due to Iron Dome.

I'm not sure why you keep mentioning Hamas in the context of Iran anyway. The more pro-Iranian militia in Gaza is PIJ. Besides, Gaza has (had) a tiny inventory of rockets, because they can't be conventionally resupplied and have to mostly rely on homemade weapons from pipes and household chemicals. Palestinians are basically a nonfactor.

>wasting money cultivating these groups
Iran probably got tired of wasting money after seeing that Hezbollah rockets were so ineffective, and that's probably a major reason why Assad's government collapsed so easily. Both anti-Assad and pro-Assad senior people knew no help was coming from Iran or Iraq, and that's why anti-Assad forces made their move and why Assad's government collapsed like a house of cards like the Afghan government in 2021; every senior official was busy trying to secure their own exit.

Yes, post 2023 events demonstrated that militias with short-range rockets are a waste of money, and long range missiles are a more cost effective investment. I think Iranian strategists had already begun to suspect this, but post 2023 events gave solid evidence. Iran was also provided with two opportunities to test its long range missiles against Israel's most heavily defended locations such as the airbases in the Negev desert and verify that a sufficient number of missiles would get through.

>They should have been selling cheap oil to the Chinks to at least build out an air force

Digging into the rock to build and launch ballistic missiles--the least cost-effective conventional weapon--is retarded. The Chinks would have furnished them with some J-10s and PL-15s for far less than it would cost and they could credibly stop the Israeli 4th gen aircraft from flying into wester Iran with impunity. Look at what Pakistan was able to do against India. Maybe Israel would have blown them all up on the ground, but Iran ceded control of its skies from day one. I don't care how many missiles they have, that's going to make it almost impossible to mount a coherent response to what Israel is doing, which is why we've only seen these goofy as missile spam that don't actually appear to be hitting anything of military value.
