No, it was a remake of The Thing from Another World released in 1951, which was based on the novella Who Goes There? by John W Campbell which was written in 1938. The Carpenter remake sticks much closer to Campbell’s originally story. At the Mountains of Madness was serialized in Astounding in 1936, two years before Campbell took it over, so he was undoubtedly aware of it and probably got some inspiration from Lovecrafts idea of digging up a long buried creature from the ice and it comes alive. Imo, the magnetic core isn't a thing. The Earth's EM field is a toroidal EM dipole, the torus being basically a cylinder. A round iron geodynamo can't create a toroidal EM field.
