The detectors are designed to look for radio emissions produced by neutrino interactions with ice. The current hypothesis is that these unidentified signals that they've caught a few times over the last ~20ish years are from some kind of high energy stellar or galactic interaction, but they don't know yet. The energy and angles are outside the ranges predicted by most events we're familiar with like supernovae.

The detectors are designed to detect a particular bandwidth of ultrashort radio pulses known to be produced by random interactions between high-energy neutrinos and water-ice. These are nanosecond-long blips of radio waves with no modulation to them, not extended bursts of highly structured signals.
