it's kind of a burden that at 38 years old i have to manage my 69 year old mother's finances, but in the end it saves me money since i was paying most her bills anyways.

My mother had an entire retirement fund built up, but her and my father blew it all on Cruises and gambling when he got sick. They had probably a half million in savings, and now she has nothing to show for it. He had no life insurance and instead of saving some of that money to pay his final expenses and then live off once he was gone, they decided to spend his last few months "traveling and having fun" ie going on cruises and bus trips to atlantic city and vegas. For the last few years since my dad passed i felt obligated as a good son to help out, but the older i get the more i realize they HAD money set aside to live off in retirement and they blew it. I have nothing. No pension, no inheritance. Just a modest house and whatever money i make from work. I'm not robbing my kids anymore so that my mother can have cable TV or tickets to LPGA events. Those are luxuries. If she wanted to enjoy those things in retirement, her and my father should have planned for that instead of wasting every dime they saved before he died.

My kids all went to small Catholic schools in K-5, then I homeschooled from middle school up. My daughters both graduated a year early. My son is still in 3rd grade but compared to public school peers he's leaps and bounds ahead.

I think in the early grades it's important for kids to have alot of social interaction with eachother to make friends etc. But by middle school they already have friends, and education is now more about preparing them for adulthood than it is for making friends and doing art/music etc.

At public school the average highschool day is 8 hours. I was able to complete all my kid's academic work in about 2 hours a day. When you cut out the study halls, lunch, gym, etc. it's amazing how much of the average schoolday is just filler.

With some of the online programs now its insane that more people dont opt to homeschool.

They have 3 elementary school buildings that went up in the early 90's when class sizes were around 25 per class. Average class size now is 6-10. Yet the district refuses to lay off, sell property, or consolidate resources and just increases taxes year over year to pay for it instead. It makes no sense.

Looking back to my grandparents, in their old age they were so warm and comforting. I can still remember being like 5 and my grandmother rocking me in her living room chair, i can remember every scent and sight of her little old house. I remember getting little gumballs from the gumball machine she had, i remember her taking us downtown (before it got ghetto) at christmas time, not to buy anything but just to spend time together.

My dad's side was straight from italy and they were equally warm. Holidays were spent with three generations around a big table in the basement, eating, drinking coffee, telling stories and sharing time together.

Once my grandparents were gone, it just stopped. My parents generation just didn't care about extended family. My parents became much colder. Everything was about "enjoying their life" as they got to retirement years. Instead of spending time with me in my last few years of childhood, they spent most their 50's taking trips to Vegas or Florida to plan their retirement. They never planned to stay local or to see their grandkids or see my family grow. It was like family was a ball and chain that was going to be gone as soon as they signed their retirement papers.

I've watched her hand tens of thousands of dollars to my younger brother for first med school, then a wedding, then a down payment on a house, and now spoils his two kids. Same kid that was absent for my dad's entire decline...

I once made the mistake of asking if there was anything left for me since the house was long gone and my mother lives much much better than my wife and I do.

My mother, uncle and aunt have always been relatively poor. My grandparents managed to acquire multiple homes and had a lot of money invested and save by the time they were in their 70s..
My grandparents had a home near downtown Decatur (Georgia), and it was massive. They had purchased it in the 1950s for about $40,000. For some reason they decided to sell it for North of a million and blow it all on travel and entertainments.
They had a beautiful mountain side cabin in North Georgia of which they also sold for North of a million and bought a new house in their mid 80s...
They've spent all of that extra cash on travelling and entertainments and gambling and there is pretty much nothing left.
I don't understand why so many older people don't wish to assist their children and grandchildren to have a better life. Do they think acquiring wealth is easy today?
