To prevent Communism from spreading throughout all of Southeast Asia. A worthy goal, poorly executed to say the least, but at least it contained Communism in only Vietnam and Cambodia. Indonesia for example was about to flip and US involvement in Vietnam pushed it into a genocide of the Communists there instead (nice).
It wasn't the war itself but a few key mistakes which led to such an utter disaster. The US never truly recovered and never will.
