First of all, this would not necessarily be feasible given that the U.S. then and now had a little something known as the 2nd amendment. Had the U.S. tried to pull such a maneuver the whole south would unite would arm everyone, black or white to fend off such an existential threat.

Secondly no, that would not have been for the better. The south would be nowhere near as developed if its entire population had been culled and racism towards blacks wouldn’t realistically die out either with the eradication of the south, much less racism towards literally every other race. Imagine the ferocity the Mexican American war would have been fought with had the people being invaded known that incorporation into the US would mean total eradication,

And that’s not mentioning the political possibility of the entire proposition. Lincoln barely had enough sway to convince Americans to fight the civil war to its close, much less to keep the army mobilized for long enough to allow for a total eradication of all southerners, who northerners considered their own countrymen. Even if we assume he wasn’t shot and/or Andrew Johnson was in on the plan and won 2 terms, there’s no way such an idea could have been propositioned in a remotely desirable way to the population when the very suggestion would have gotten him removed from office.
