What the US Army doesn't tell you is that you get paid a measly 20k a year, but it's fine, because they cover your food and housing by letting you live in a moldy concrete box and you get to eat sloppa.
No matter how big that bonus looks, assuming you're being required to sign a 5 year contract, that's like making 30k a year to live in a shitty barracks and eat sloppa.
I was in the Army, and I got out. There is no rational economic incentive to being in the military other than getting access to the GI Bill, and even then, you'll want to get out as fast as fucking possible.
I like the Army in concept, but the fact of the matter is that it's a retarded lifestyle, and there's very good reason why people aren't signing up. Rather than offering huge bonuses, they should just pay people a fair amount of money without trying to scam them.
Since the Army won't pay people a fair wage without trying to hoodwink them with gay scams, people aren't going to sign up.
>I can get paid 30k a year to be an aviation mechanic in the Army, or I can get paid 110K a year to be an aviation mechanic at the civilian airport.
It's just idiotic. As I said, GI Bill, training, education. That's all the Army has to offer, and that's shit you can get elsewhere, or shit that you want to loot and leave with immediately.
They're going to have retention problems indefinitely until there's a systemic overhaul in how it's run as an employer.

I'm lower enlisted, make 80k a year, plus my 50k bonus (90k per year since its a 5 year contract) 5% match to my retirement, live off base in a nice home, free healthcare, dental, college (have 2 associates, going to work on my bachelors soon) steep discounts on almost everything, and have 6 figure jobs lined up when I get out.. but I'm married and will admit the pay and quality of life is substantially better for me. Though I will say, its a lot easier to get a wife being in the military than as a civillian, because you're forced to be in good shape (well, most of us) and women who arent weird giga liberals think the uniform is hot and know you have a steady income. Honestly was the best decision I made in my entire life, though it definitely matters what job you choose and isn't for everybody

Your MOS is completely fucking irrelevant to how much you get paid. So, you're lying, retarded, or you're some officer who's pretending to be lower enlisted, and you genuinely don't realize how little money those people make.
Base pay for an E4 is around 2k a month. That's it. You literally make less than working at McDonalds, and if you're actually lower enlisted, E4 is the highest you could be. Even if you were getting BaH that tripled that, you still wouldn't be making 80k a year, and as you said, you don't even get that unless you're married.

Normal people don't get that shit. Nor do you have the power as a lower enlisted to finangle that shit.
Maybe you're lucky. Fine.
But look at that: Your BAH is more than double your pay, and soldiers aren't allowed to get BAH unless they're married, or they're an E6 at least.
Yet the military is trying to attract 18 year old single men.
It's retarded.
I'll meet you in the middle and say, alright, you are getting compensated well. But you are a very fucking niche exception, and honestly, you got lucky and none of that shit is anything you could gain on purpose.
For example, getting paid that much BAH is a complete fluke, because you were randomly assigned by the Army to a particularly lucrative location. Most US bases are located in scenic Meth Town, and BAH isn't that high, even if you're getting it at all. The majority of soldiers don't, and never will.

That's not my problem. I explicitly said in my post everything you said EXCEPT the part about location. I.e. its important you have a good job and being married helps a ton. Even before I was married though, before I moved to this base, before i got my FLPB or a cent of my bonus... because I had no housing or food expenses, I was spending money like an idiot with my friends on the weekends and STILL constantly putting more into my savings and retirement than probably 90% of Americans.

Say what you want. The military has plenty of downsides and I won't sugar coat them, but it was the best decision I ever made and it could be for anyone intelligent enough to get a good job... which apparently everyone on 4chan is

Already did my time as a sub propulsion plant operator. Outed early for novaxx and Navy still paid for my engineering degree. I fully expect the knock/call/email/letter if they think they're going to draft. I still get emails from Admiral Richard Cheeseman about the novaxx discharge. No I'm not kidding, this guy's name is Admiral Dick Cheese.

>Annual Basic Allowance for Housing$38,448.00
~$3200/mo BAH? For an E4? You must be living in California. Near everywhere else affordable is around $2200/mo for an E4. BAS is also not giving guaranteed depending on your command. For example the Navy pays that directly to the ship/boat instead of you while on sea duty. Granted on subs you pick up sub pay which can end up being double that BAS. Also tax advantaged income only comes into play when you're deployed to a tax free or warzone. You're leaving a lot of realities out of the equation in the pay.

Being married, and praying you luckily get assigned to a location with good BAH is not a rational argument for the current way the Army handles payroll. It benefits you, but imagine you were stationed in Mississipi for some reason.
Your pay is now decreased by 40% for no reason that you have control over, wow, based.
Expecting people to sign a 4-year contract on a gamble is implicitly ridiculous, even if it's possible that it could hypothetically work out if they get lucky as hell like you did. Expecting that your pay should depend on your marital status is implicitly ridiculous.
It's just designed idiotically. It doesn't work right. It's a risky, stupid career path.
The point of this thread is "Why is recruitment/retention so low?" and I've accurately explained it: It doesn't make rational economic sense.
The fact that you can get lucky and be paid well doesn't contradict my point, it supports it, because the disparity in pay coming down to where you randomly got stationed and whether you have a wife is irrational.
Imagine if a civilian corporation made 70% of your pay contingent on getting pussy. Calling it irrational is an understatement, it's a disastrously backwards and idiotic way of structuring things.

Im not disputing what youre saying, my entire point was that its intellectually dishonest to act like military members are making less than mcdonalds employees when, worst case scenario, you are getting a place to live and free food.. and can pocket the rest.
>>507679709
If I were to get reassigned, I would be making less on paper, but the cost of living would be lower so while I acknowledge the factual reality of what youre saying, I put forth that I would still be living pretty darn good, free school, good jobs in the future, etc.

Also, I sincerely agree with what you're saying about it being extremely fucked up how much your pay depends on being married. The amount they take for living in the shitty barracks and the value they put on dfac food - when doge revealed how little of the meal deduction even goes towards the dfac - is completely screwed

Considering the experience in a good rate/mos, and the embodied benefits, yes it is patently dumb to try to compare the compensation packages.

In my initial post, I explained that the only viable reason to join the military is for training, and to get access to the GI Bill. That's it.
The only reason it's working for you is raw luck, and even then... You need to get the fuck out as soon as possible, and work in the civilian market instead. You will make way more money with way less instability.
For me, I enlisted with a college degree because I wanted a masters, and I needed the GI Bill because I was out of money and needed a way to get more school so I could get a masters. I got a 20k bonus, and was paid 2k a month to live in a shitty barracks with no kitchen for four years. There was literally no economic upside other than the fact that the GI Bill+BAH while using the GI Bill would ultimately save me like 250k going to a good graduate program.
I got paid fucking nothing while I was in though, and as a career I find it retarded. I wish the Army was a legitimate long-term career, but it's not. It just isn't.

24 hours is underestimate. That's just a regular at some commands even at home port. 3 section duty is the worst experience. Rather just be underway than this half assed basically deployed lifecycle of always off going or oncoming duty section. VA home loans are great for avoiding the PMI when you go to buy though. VA can help you out if you know how to work it.

I'm in school, just like I intended. Nothing to complain about anymore, I just think the Army needs to change to be viable.
I loved the Army. I liked being in uniform, I loved my platoon, I liked the adventure, I even liked motorpool shit sometimes, as long as it was a slow day and I could bullshit with my friends the whole time.
I just want the Army to actually make sense. I like the concept and the culture, so having it be completely dysfunctional as a career choice just inherently bothers me. I wish I could have stayed in, because I liked my job! But they chased me out, because the powers that be were either going to use my patriotism against me to exploit me, or I was going to leave. I didn't have a real choice.
