Why did it take 45 years for the US government and Israel to finally get around to toppling Iran? They've been itching to do this for decades but never got this close before. Was the last half century just one elaborate 5D chess game to weaken the country and manufacture consent in the west?

Because Israel has had potent sleeper cells like Hamas and Hezbollah as well as hostile state actors like Assad surrounding them up until extremely recently.

Before Iran they had to hit every other country near israel. Over the course of how long, 2 decades? They managed to do it and now Iran is last piece of puzzle, when thats done Israel can do whatever it wants in the middle east and later on who knows.
