Tickets to the complete opposite side of the world will usually be around $1,500 max for economy. From US to Europe you can get tickets for $6-700 depending on where you go and what time of year. Most major cities in Europe will have the airport connected to the city center by public transport and if its a shitty country taxis will be cheap. In Europe you can stay in a cheap hostel or again, if in a third world country lots of hotels will be cheap. You don't have to Uber everywhere and in most cases you can just use bus or train. I lived in Italy for a few years (not in Rome though, if you don't count a couple short stays; I only saw Colosseum, the forum and nearby ruins, Vatican from outside, Villa Borghese and their shitty subway(what a step back from Moscow's)) and wouldn't agree with the first part. They were pretty friendly and helpful. My friends who only visited Rome had the same experience you did though, they'd even gotten scammed iirc. I reckon that those who work in tourist-heavy areas are just sick and tired of foreigners and take out their frustrations on them.
Meanwhile staff at banks, postal and other bureaucratic offices were generally genuinely eager to help, some of them legit went out of their way for that.
YMMW, of course, Italy is not homogeneous at all. There's still a divide between north and south, for one, even though at this point it's turning more and more into pretense/tradition I think.

The not speaking English part is quite true though, even among the younger Italians half of them could hardly string a sentence together. On the upside, hearing you speak even broken Italian excites them and makes them all the more eager to help and/or chat, they really appreciate it when foreigners try.

Outside of that, if you travel beyond Europe to other places, like South America or Central Asia, you realize we have it pretty good. Most places lack basic plumbing, or if they have it you can’t flush the toilet paper. We have drinkable tap water, the opportunity for homeownership, and our society isn’t based on class (as much, but we are getting there. In Europe it’s firmly entrenched).
I’ve been to probably over 30 countries now, and honestly I prefer home now. I like my life. I like where I live, and I’m thankful I was born here.

Miami escapes some of this with more walkable neighborhoods and public transportation. It needs improvements too, of course, but it has something the rest of Florida doesn't have. Miami has some identity. Orlando and Tampa are just mcmansions in the middle of nowhere that have no identity. But very high rents now. And mass third world immigration. I don't oppose some latin american and caribbean immigration. But it's just been overwhelmed by it at this point. Also big finance has moved in, some of which with questionable ethical/legal standings.
