It's definitely a dictatorship, but a lot of the refugees get taught out of the holohoax survivor playbook a la Elie Wiesel. Once you watch enough videos with them you can tell what's true and what they've been told to say that may or may not be true, but if it is, probably didn't happen to them.

But it's still interesting because there's always some true things in there and it's pretty easy to tell the difference vs the talking points they are given.

North Korea is absolutely a dictatorship by their own internally generated state media content. The only good news for North Korea is that they developed nuclear weapons. If North Korea did not develop nuclear weapons they would be getting the Iran treatment right now if not sooner

A lot of what I see about North Korea in the media tends to be later quietly debunked, or from a shitty propaganda source (RFA for example), or a mistranslation.
Like when you see "[insert person here] has been executed in North Korea" a lot of the time it ends up being wrong and whoever was supposedly executed ends up being alive and well. Usually by this time the damage is already done and any corrections or retractions are just made quietly.
I also don't believe in the whole "every normal(ish) looking picture or video of North Korea is staged and they're all just actors or being held at gunpoint" narrative. I think they're mostly just living their normal lives. North Korea's a poor country but I don't know how authoritarian their government actually is considering the unreliability of a lot of sources reporting on North Korea.
A lot of them have a vested interest in lying about the regime.

They have an intranet instead of an Internet in order to guard the country against the powerful influence of Western propaganda, and the CIA's army of social media bots and shills.
I also don't see why state media is inherently more biased than billionaire-owned private media. Both of them have their biases. But with state media if the state is run in a democratic manner then at least it's more accountable to the people.
I'm just trying to figure out if North Korea's actually a democracy or not. I think a lot of the horror stories you hear from there are false. Maybe they all really do just love Kim Jong Un and the WPK.

It's not enough to have nukes, you also have to cultivate an image that you are crazy enough to use them. Half the stories about how crazy North Korea is are released by North Korea themselves for exactly this purpose.

I agree with this.
North Korea, reportedly, also offers free universal healthcare and education up to the college level, of course depending on academic performance. They try to graduate engineers (for obvious reasons; they need defense capabilities).
With all the trade now with Russia and China, I don't believe North Koreans are hungry all the time anymore, though maybe there was widespread hunger there in the past.
Also, North Korea is becoming a tourist country. They even built a ski resort that some intrepid tourists, who like their travels to be off the beaten path, go to visit.
And North Korea's economy is supposedly growing fast right now, again due to Russia and China trade.

Absolutely, and I agree. Most are just going about their daily lives. I think it is a dictatorship, but for the majority of people the only way this effects their lives is because of import/export restrictions and their shitty soldiers wandering up to their houses and demanding food, and general fuckery.

I think it probably kind of sucks there and that people definitely get sent off for some bullshit reasons because it's pretty corrupt. I imagine that's kind of stressful, and not having food gets to people eventually. I don't think people are walking around absolutely terrified 24/7 though and that it's probably mostly normal there other than general shittiness.

Everyone always wants to talk about the Kims but Turkmenistan is pretty wild too.

Norks will survive whatever hardship the rest of the global economy endures because norks are a pariah Nation, a hermit kingdowm, seperate from the rest of the world. They will gradually develop in a wholesome manner, rather than in a degenerate and decadent manner. Remember from history: the iron curtain shielded Eastern Europe from decadent neo-morals, for the most part, up until recently.

This is like the only large ethno-state on the planet, too. There is a White-only Afrikaner/Boer city called Orania, and some other states that are >99% ethnically homogeneous therefore close enough to pass as ethno-states, but those are an increasing rarity in the increasingly globalized world

Is living there pleasant? Probably not, but we know everyone is watched by the government, but we also it's been debunked that it's a distopian hellhole where the worst crimes of humanity occur. It is a Monarchy traditionally, and behaves closer to one rather than a third-world dictatorship. So I would speculate modern serfdom to the state.

It is honestly impressive they've been able to succeed as much as they have since the Korean War. It was predicted by most US media that they would collapse within 10 years with NATO sanctions, and since China wasn't was a dominant superpower yet, NATO thought they couldn't succeed. Somehow they've scrapped by. Are the citizens happy? I have no idea.

Southkorean chaebols had enslaved and psyoped their population way to much beyond repair while north korea has a resemblance of respect for their traditions, south korea overlords (chaebols and united states) will prioritize always the needs of shareholders and political interest before the ones of the country itself

North Korea is a dictatorship, as in it's rule by a dictator, that is correct.
But beyond that all the negative connotations are wrong.

North Korea is no different to the thousands of other kingdoms of the past.
Like Tudor England was a dictatorship, pre-civil war England was a dictatorship. Prussia was a dictatorship, Bavaria under Ludwig II was a dictatorship, the Holy Roman Empire was a dictatorship. The Roman Empire was a dictatorship, etc. Any European country with a monarchy nowadays is a de facto dictatorship even with the "constitutional monarchy" cope.

In case you're not aware, we are the ones starving them through the UN embargo (since 2006) and previous sanctions before. The United States never withdrew their wartime sanctions on North Korea and is still technically at war with them (only an armistice was signed, but no peace treaty). And that was even before they started to develop nuclear weapons. The Kims are lunatics alright, but so are the rest of us who demand total capitulation (uhm, reminds you of something?) for them to exist.

>One day, while drawing a picture of the Tower of Juche, Kim Jong-un asked, "Fujimoto, are there tall towers in Japan too?" Fujimoto told Kim Jong-un about Tokyo Tower and showed him a drawing of it, which delighted Kim Jong-un, who then put the picture away in a box for safekeeping.

I think it really depends on the class of the person in North Korea. High class people are always going to be treated well, but the lower class and military are probably not treated that well.
