A great ordeal of time and money was invested to make this man suffer and he will go on suffering.

This is why I could not do medicine other than hospice or psychiatry. It's literally not ethical to save that guy's life. But they are legally obligated to. It would have been more humane to have been euthanized than make him endure insane pain only to survive being brain damaged and a fraction of himself. This is what you have concluded if you didnt find a way to make a funny of it.

I save people all the time who have no idea the terror and suffering they are bringing on themselves. I see it as part of my duty to tell a family when enough is enough. I too have seen the suffering, but my skill and duty lies in my ability to get someone to hospice, talk them down from the idea of more suffering for no gain, and let them rest. Once on hospice it's just going through the motions. All the hard decisions have been made. Most doctors dont want to have the conversations like this because they are difficult. I don't see it as an evil thing to do to allow someone to die if they cannot survive without significant regular intervention.
