Rifle:
before you shoot- Get a sling
after 1000 rnds - you'll know what you like and don't. I recommend getting an optic and replacing the handguard...maybe a forward grip/bipod (depending on desired range of the platform and landscape around you or operational area)
+2000 rnds - you should have finger fucked some nicer guns in the gun store by now and will want to upgrade yours. Single stage/two stage are what I like. Forced reset triggers/Super safety's should be reserved for your second or third build.
+5000 Depending on comfort level and where you've been shooting. You'll want to try running and gunning. Do it. Most ranges have amateur meets once or twice a month. If not, again depending on a wide range of variables, now is a good time to get starting on training. Ask around for tips at the range if you're broke. But you should have enough familiarity with your platform to understand the instructions given to you and you'll still be fresh enough to correct bad habits.

Pistol:
Get a .44mag and enough ammo to shoot it until the barrel comes off. Then go buy a glock. It will feel like cheating. Then replace a single part with an aftermarket part every 1000rnds you shoot it. By the time you're done upgrading it you'll have an upgraded glock and the equally as good original glock.
